KZR750R1 2006 OBXT Head Gasket/Motor Refresh

Recommended Posts

So.. Is this something that could also be tried on old valve covers ('05, 107k miles) that have started leaking? Or is it just time to replace them at that point?

Oh yeah. If you try to reseal the old rubber will probably not take it.

KZR, what piston to wall clearances are you going for?
Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

Manley is recommending .003 for mild and .0035 for high boost. I'd say somewhere right between those will do fine. :)

Rotating parts are in the garage. Balanced the rods and crank. Polished the bearings. Pistons were already a balanced set.

Bummer #1

Case has not been decked yet.

Expect him to take till next week.

Bummer #2

Passenger head has cracks. :p

I need to find another head.

Well, I had mine fitted to their specs (0.080 ~ 0.085mm) and I have to tell you, it's loud. That's the easy and reliable fitment, no way you will lock it up while breaking in hard, but it clanks like an old Chinese bus. If I were doing this over I'd probably ask for 0.070mm and take more time / care to break it in.

Those cracks to the spark plug boss aren't a problem. Lots of EJ205 heads show those cracks and run like that for years.

WAT!

So your not only telling me it should be tighter tolerance but I can run this head with cracks in it. What could be the cause of these cracks?

Would always be suspicious if I moved forward without addressing.

Will be calling a welding wizard today. Has helped be in the past. Not sure if his bag of tricks extends to this madness though.

Looking for used and new quotes for a slab of aluminum.

Will decide once I have answers.

Use searchtempest, or just start calling JYs and see if they'll pull heads for you. Don't quote me on it, but, I'm thinking it's probably not the best idea to use a set of mis-matched heads.

Looking at it this way.

Used I'm looking for two.

The reading I pulled through last night was in conclusive what other models have this same head config. Looked like I could call out some year of WRX as well for the JY search.

If new is an option financially. I may try this route and deck the same.

Unless this one is fixable I have to call around today and see if this seems possible.

Any decent head welding guy can fix that. The head on our Civic D16Z6 had been welded a number of times. One fix was involved removing the head of a valve from #3. Brad at RLZengineering fixed it every time. The last I heard that same head was holding 735whp.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

I'm hoping so Max. Would like to keep these lumps together.

Interesting that others on the interwebs are saying the same thing as far_side. Run it. :/

Cause sounds like overtourqed plugs. Great, self inflicted wounds are not awesome.

Will let some folks get their coffee fix finished up and start making some calls.

I know you guys are getting ready for lunch. Were still waking up. :)

Really, the cracks are nothing. Worry about clearances.

Yeah but likely not any better prepared than who has it now. There is another shop in the east bay I'm going to call and talk to again. Cost was high but if they have seen these heads in the past would be better prepared to get me setup to assemble.

Livermore Subaru new quote for PN 11039AB650 = $862 I can negotiate a 10% with the amount of parts I've purchased there.

subarupartsonline = $560

Welding Specialist was inconclusive and would be pricey. Nice to talk to him again though.

I hear what your saying fahr_side... Your in the 75% run it comments I find on other forums.

Yep. The 2.0 guys have been seeing these for years. A lot of guys have run them cracked like that for years with no ill-effects. I would also not run mismatched heads btw, which makes a parts bill for two new heads pretty shocking.

Yeah.

Boxkita dangled cosworth prepped heads in my face in another thread.

Still have a couple calls to make today.

I don't like it but may just run it like it is. Start scrimping for a built motor.

In my searching finally found the answer to a question GT and I were discussing.

He used a term of semi closed deck. Our motors are semi closed. But IMO that's marginal as it's only one more rib added to the casting. The Open deck heads must only go in NA motors.

I think some turbo blocks are open deck. s2baru recently had his 5th gen GT motor built and I believe his block was open deck and he opted to either have his block modified to semi closed or bought one prepped that way.
