  1. been spinning my wheels since i can't decide what direction i want to go with the car...needs a whole paint job, so undecided if i actually want to get that done, or just let the paint do its thing and turn sorta derelict and just keep her running well mechanically. so instead, i've started working on the interior, and figuring out suspension stuff. "new" weathertech mats from a friend selling his outback, actual new trunk liner, new back seat release thingies in the trunk since they both broke(50+lbs of bowling balls can be...unwieldy...), used steering wheel that's in much better shape than mine, and my window regulator decided to take a dump on me so i've got one of those on order. still need a couple extra bits and pieces here(deformed tweeter cover, for instance) that i'll grab at a junk yard next time i go to the good one, and the big thing is a new seat since the vinyl is cracked and splitting... certainly not the most fun update, but it's satisfying when everything's starting to feel nicer again.
  2. agree with FL. especially on radiators with plastic nipples the constant pressure clamps are the bees knees and cheap
  3. had a similar issue with my TL. everything else was solid but still getting a driveline vibration. took it to a shop to confirm my suspicions and it ended up being one of the CVs was gone...replaced both and she rode perfectly again.
  4. well...welcome...back? heck of a way to start your GT trip... got any plans for it or just gonna roll with it as stock for a while?
  5. gotcha, hey gotta start off with the easy stuff first lol. yeah sounds like it'd either be a blend door issue, or an issue with the hvac control system.
  6. i've heard of project creep, but dang that's serious. good stuff that you finally got it back together and running, hopefully it's on the road soon, gonna be a whole new car.
  7. have to ask the obvious...are the vents themselves on? you can turn the thumb wheels by each vent to turn them on and off. i know i keep mine turned off since i rarely have passengers.
  8. oof that sucks. do you go and get OEM glass for replacement or just whatever whoever has? i've replaced my fair share of windshields and the aftermarket ones are just never as good as OE
  9. yup. i spray a little silicone spray in the locks once a year, same time i rub down all the door seals/gaskets, hinges, and hood release with it. never had the key not work.
  10. oh solid, might have to look in to that...would be nice to see some actual useful information in the cockpit without having to use torque or something like that
  11. i like the thinking...keep it conservative. if something blows up for some unknown reason and you want to take and build the engine and go for the gusto at that point, that's a whole other story, but for a solid daily driver a full exhaust and tune will get you to a good spot. plus, this leaves you more money for sway bars and konis and lowering springs and light wheels and sticky tires and aero and.....the list goes on.
  12. saw that this morning--rumor of the m3 engine in it too for a GRMN spec...i'll believe both when i see it.
  13. i hope the manual uptake is strong like on the past generations...may give toyota the three pedal nudge it needs for the supra finally...not that i'll ever be able to afford either of them lol, but it'd be nice to see them on the road anyways. definitely loving the vibe of the Z, even if the silhouette has a *lot* of 370z in it.
  14. yeah, i think for a while at least we should be fine since subarus share so much between platforms, but it's the little stuff like the oil cooler that have me worried. all goes as planned i fully expect to hang on to this car for at least 10 more years, but i'm figuring at 20 years old the parts are going to be the issue considering how little aftermarket love this platform gets. who knows? maybe there'll be a 5th gen GT renaissance
  15. agreed with the others, a good tune really opens up the engine. big money and unreliability is what it's going to take to get to the 350-400 wheel mark. i was shocked at the night and day difference a tune made on my car--stock intake and exhaust and on a stage 1 cobb tune really did a number on low to mid range power on the car...went from kinda sleepy down low to quick and extremely usable. if you really want to push the car like others have said you're looking at new turbo territory and the plethora of supporting mods that go along with it. it's doable, and been done, but it's not easy, and given that you're asking the questions unless you plan to learn to do the wrenching yourself, it certainly won't be cheap. my thoughts is if you want 400 whp, start with a new car that makes 400. at this point that's what i'd do...i'm at the point where i just want my cars to work, not tinkering all day every day...unless it's a project.
  16. this is the thing that keeps me worried about keeping my car super long term...would like to get another 10 years out of it but when parts start becoming difficult/impossible to come by, man that's tough to hold on to. you talking about part number 21311AA160 for the oil cooler? looks like there's one on ebay shipped from china, which is a risk there...wonder if you'd have more luck trying to order one in from japan directly rather than waiting for subaru to try and source one.
  17. michigan car gotta keep an eye on rusty parts, but if all it needs is head gaskets/rebuilt head prolly couple grand, and valves should be pretty easy to source...rusty parts/body work is where it starts to get expensive. if i had a garage or driveway i could work on/house a car for a few weeks/months while stuff gets rebuilt i'd be in consideration, but...city streets are not hospitable to major engine work.
  18. you can pop the accessory belt off and spin each one by hand and feel for any grit or excessive play to try to pin point which one it might be.
  19. i've used mobil 1 5w30, the regular stuff not high mileage or anything, since i've had the car(5 years, 55k miles) and haven't had a problem with it. when the engine was taken apart for head gaskets(about 20k miles ago) everything was clean and in good shape. was dealer maintained before i got it so it had whatever subaru uses until i got it. i do use the larger rx-8 filter as well, but that might just be me being extra.
  20. fingers crossed for ya that it's something easy... on the other hand there *are* 6mts available in junk yards for a...reasonable...price that would save a bunch versus a new... car-part.com is a good place to start
