I used to get Centerforce clutches/pp and t.o. bearing for 5.0 Mustangs for under $150, but that was the early 90's... Everything seems expensive these days!

By the time you price all the components, the FM setup is a pretty good deal, but if you're just doing clutch/pp on a stock motor, you can definitely do it a lot cheaper.

I'm starting to get the feeling this thing may just end up with forced induction, so I want to go better than stock on the clutch.

Bringing this back up from before as the more I drive my Miata the more I'm convinced I'll need to do the clutch sooner rather than later. Flyin Miata's Happy Meal seems like it might be over kill as they rate their stage 1 at over 300 lb-ft of tq, but it's a good deal for what you get. The Goodwin Racing Exedy Happy Meal is the same price but they only rate it at 170 lb-ft and due to sales tax would cost me $45 more shipped than the FM kit. However the Goodwin kit seems like it'd fit my naturally aspirated + MS3 PnP plans better. :spin:

If you don't mind keeping your stock flywheel, you can do the Exedy stock replacement for $125 from Goodwin, or the 170 lb-ft clutch for $300. But who wants to keep the stock flywheel on a Miata?

And the lightened flywheel is the killer... they're all $300.

At which point I figure I might as well get the FM level 1. It will be fine N/A, and if I go F/I, it will hold anything I can do with the stock rods. I wouldn't worry about it being 'overkill'... there's a ton of folks running them on N/A cars. And it is a better deal than the Goodwin setup.

You could put a stock replacement behind a lightened flywheel, but I don't think that would be a good idea. The extra slippage required from time to time would probably kill it. More so if it's a DD...

Kind of my thinking too. Did you go with their 13lb or 10lb flywheel?

Going thru the garage and found a replacement slave cylinder for my old 10AE's 6 speed.

Let me know if you find the 6spd and rear diff in the garage:lol:

So, yesterday I pulled the head to take a look at things and swap in the '94-00 head gasket...

While pulling things apart, I noticed this:

There was another one on one of the freeze plugs. These are temp indicators usually put on by rebuilders to tell if the engine has been overheated when it comes in for warranty repairs. Since the breaker I bought the motor from offers a warranty, I'm assuming he put them on as there's no indication the motor was rebuilt. I'll double check on Monday.

Here's what the pistons looked like when I pulled the head:

A little carbon, but not bad. Came right off with a little carb cleaner and some elbow grease...

Cylinder walls look great...

Head looks good, one before and one after cleaning...

Ran the valves again before pulling the head to double check my numbers, and when I had the head back on the block, I pulled the exhaust cam to measure shims. Crunched all the numbers and will be ordering 6 shims Monday morning. Not cheap at $9 each, but I haven't been able to find any alternatives to the factory parts. Got the front crank and intake cam seals installed, exhaust cam will have to wait 'till the shims arrive and the cam is reinstalled. Rear main will be done later. Also plan to get the water pump and timing belt parts ordered next week as well.

Making progress, but things are going a little more slowly than I planned... :p

I wouldn't exactly call 0-60 in 5.8 fast, but the NDs do handle well. I haven't driven one myself, but have seen one set a pretty quick time around a track with nothing but a set of stick tires, and a great driver (Keith Tanner).

Also a feature on all Miatas... ;)

When most cars are in the(0-60mph) 8-6 sec range I'd call that fast, but it feels much faster. Especially on an on/off ramp.

When Subaru put a turbo on the Legacy GT, and it did 5.5 0-60, that was pretty quick for a 'typical' sedan (they even compared it to the Porsche Boxster in commercials)... but that was 2004. Now it's just not that quick, when normal 'performance' cars are into the 4 second range. "Fast" has moved with the times...

Here's some 'normal' 2014-2016 cars that are in the 5 sec 0-60 range...

Accord v6

Cadillac CTS

Acura TLX

Chrysler 300C

Ford Edge

Lexus ES350

Nissan Maxima

Camry V6

The new ND is a great car. But it certainly isn't fast, at least not in a straight line. Stock Miatae never have been, but that's not Mazda's intent for the car. If it had been, they would have given the ND 200hp and made it a world-beater.

I'll never understand why Mazda doesn't offer a turbo variant.

Well, they did, and it was a complete flop, saleswise anyway. Of course the Mazdaspeed only offered ~30-40hp over the standard car, and was much more expensive.

Looks like Fiat may build an Abarth model of their version of the ND... that could be interesting! :D

I had a 2003.5 MazdaSpeed Protege. The turbo Mazda motors of that time frame did not hold up well to modification. I had a boost controller, FMIC and BOV and was running 11lbs as my daily and 13lbs in race mode.

Blew the motor with under 30k on the clock. Ripped all the mods off and drove it to a local Mazda dealer. The service manager pulled me aside and told me he knew I modified it and would fix it anyway (can't hide the gaping hole I cut in the radiator shroud to run the FMIC piping).

It also had Racing Hart wheels. I loved them

Mazdaspeed Miatas are pretty reliable and the BP takes to boost well, the biggest issue with the MSM is the oem fuel control is crap. You basically have to get a megasquirt to make the car happy and healthy.

Not a fan of rear mounted turbos, unless the car's a garage queen. Too much exposure to rain, road grime, etc..

Hot ticket for an NC is 2.5 swap, then turbo. Fab9's setup looks to be pretty tasty once finalized... http://www.miataturbo.net/prefabbed-turbo-kits-3/fab9tunings-nc-mx-5-turbo-kit-discussion-efr-garrett-v-band-85853/

My long term plan is an LFX swap for the wife's NC, if V8R ever gets the NC kit going. Too much work to do on the NA to be serious about it for now, though the NC should be getting track wheels and probably new springs this year.

  • I Donated

Friend of mine has swapped the 2.5 into his NC, it moves pretty well. Another autocross buddy is doing that same swap for his NA, and turboing it at the same time. Not sure if I've linked this thread in here or not, but it's bonkers. It starts with him using the 1.8, and over the next year or so is when he's doing the 2.5 swap.

Got something new for the Miata today... :D

After doing a lot of shopping, and finding used trailers were pulling pretty high prices, I decided to order a new trailer back in November '15. That way I could also get exactly what I wanted, and wouldn't have to worry about someone else's deferred/non-maintenance, bad wiring or rust... Just had to wait almost 3 months... :p

Trailer is a Look Ignite 8.5x24. And yes... it cost a good bit more than I have in my NA...

Irritated that my water pump and timing belt didn't show up today, though... turns out 949 drop ships them from Michigan. Also ordered the FM Happy Meal today... Level 1 w/ 10lb flywheel.
