Bought a Miata

Recommended Posts

So.... this is what $883.90 looks like...

Not to mention the additional $20 in paper and binders for the manuals...

LOTS of reading to do... I could have just dealt with the manuals on .pdf, but I like a hard copy when working on stuff.

I've got plenty of time to read up... started cleaning parts yesterday... that's going to be a long and tedious task in itself. :p

I decided against the PNP because I wanted to be able to re-purpose the MS3 to another vehicle if the Miata gets an LFX or LS swap down the road and I use a factory ECU.

I did buy a DIYBOB that plugs into the stock harness, and I'll wire the MS3 to that.

So, today started the drudge work... cleaning.

Spent about 3hrs cleaning the trans... VIN tag matched the car, so 175k miles of grime.

Leaking rear main didn't help...

All shiny now.

Still lots of small stuff to clean, but the trans was the nastiest.

Also got in some coolant re-route parts... from a guy in Slovakia, selling them on MT.net.

Nice work getting it all cleaned up!

Are you going to change the headgasket to the 99-00 to improve the cooling with the reroute? I know some say you shouldn't do the reroute on the NB2 without the older headgasket, but others say anything helps but the reroute isn't as effective on NB2 motors. I can't figure out if I want to do it or not.

I am planning to change the head gasket. My research seems to indicate you can run a reroute with the NB2 stock head gasket, but it's not as efficient as running the NA8 gasket.

Since I have the engine out, and am already doing the WP/TB, it kind of seems like a 'must do'.

The only problem is the OCD side of me wants to go through the head while it's off, but then it's valve springs, new guides... and down the spiral we go!

I'm going to have to force myself to just run the valve clearances and put it back on! :p

Aren't the lifters hydraulic? Is there an initial adjustment required?

So, started tearing things down on the new engine tonight, pulling the cam cover to run the valve clearances. I got a little concerned at first, as the spark plugs were apparently installed by a gorilla with a 2 foot breaker bar. I squirted a little penetrating oil in there, and they eventually came loose.

Once out, they looked pretty good (all the moisture is from the penetrating oil), except for the burned down electrodes and giant gap... I think they may be the original plugs:

Once the cam cover was off, things looked really nice:

All the intake valves are in spec, but 6 of the exhaust valves are too tight, so it looks like I'm going to be pulling at least one cam to swap shims...

Got a bunch of stuff in over the last few days, so I'll be busy in the garage tomorrow...

I might need to borrow the FM tools sometime :spin::lol:

That cup holder is useless.

that's a feature on all Miata's

It's Special Edition red with the light leather and black top. The car can make you giggle for hours.

nice the launch editions are great looking cars.

They drive just as good as they look. It's finally fast stock out of the box...0-60 in about 5.8sec.

I wouldn't exactly call 0-60 in 5.8 fast, but the NDs do handle well. I haven't driven one myself, but have seen one set a pretty quick time around a track with nothing but a set of stick tires, and a great driver (Keith Tanner).

Also a feature on all Miatas... ;)
