Grab some coffee. Let's talk about Hyundai

Here is something interesting. Go to the NHTSA and conduct a complaint search on a 2011 Hyunda Sonata and see what comes up. I don't know if this link will work so I will clue you in...459 complaints for that specific model.

The do one for the 2011 Subaru Legacy. You will get 18 complaints.

First-year blues. Check the 2010 Legacy and Outback, and there are a total of 142 complaints. Chalk the difference up to the fact that Subaru sells fewer and doesn't have a hybrid model (half of the complaints were about a specific fault with the Sonata Hybrid).

Guess you should buy a used Yugo and invest the difference. :)

This would be your dream car....

clever

If you talked with any economist they will tell you to buy the least expensive car you can get by with, drive it ten years and repeat.

btw a Yugo is not on the list.

Most inexpensive car that is RELIABLE and will last that ten years.

Screw economists though. Money is a tool, and I work fairly hard to get it, and I like cars. What is the point of making a decent living if you never take some advantage of your income by doing or buying nice things (within reason)?

Well if you can afford nice things, every once in a while you should buy one. Otherwise why work so damn hard? If you have no goals that are rewarding then it is awfully hard to keep focused on meeting them.

I thought Hyundai was all about quality? The cars both have essentially the same components and are mass produced on large scale. Problems will manifest themselves if they exist.

It was really surprising to see Hyundai Sonata have 459 complaints. Pretty high for a top ranked car.

By the way, the 2010 (first model year) Subaru Legacy only had 41 complaints. Far less than the Hyundai Sonata.

Agreed. i truly believe in spoiling yourself every now and then. A couple weeks ago it was a new home theater system.

Everyone makes fun of the Chinese, but they are buying up auto makers and will overtake Hyundai and Kia in the future. Imagine that when they used to make cars like this...

Maybe our next cars should be Cherrys'. They will be top quality and top rated safety picks soon.

Here is an old Hyundai. Quite the storied history:

You do know that the NHTSA site is probably one of the least reliable sources for reliability data, right? Anybody and his retarded monkey uncle can just go on there and spew complaints till the cows come home, it doesn't mean anything as nothing is checked for accuracy. :spin:

They are still customer complaints and the raw data can't be ignored. There were 10 times as many complaints about the 2011 Hyundai Sonata as the 2011 Subaru Legacy. It seems not all Hyundai owners share the love for their reliable Hyundai as people here. There are probably many more dissatisfied Hyundai owners out there too.

This doesn't include the 10's of thousands of rentals and fleet Hyundai's that the owners aren't motivated or empowered enough to even complain. Undoubtedly there are businesses that don't bother messing with a complaint.

Yep, some people really hate those NHTSA complaints....

Unverified NHTSA complaints:

September 27, 2010 – – Hyundai Motor, South Korea's top automaker, will recall some 139,500 Sonata sedans sold in the United States, due to steering issues that could cause a loss or reduction of steering control, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Sunday.

A Hyundai spokesperson confirmed the recall.

The vehicles were built from December through September 10, according to the NHTSA report.

In February, Hyundai recalled 47,000 of its 2011 Sonata sedans in South Korea and U.S. because of potential faults in the front door locks.......
