We have the same car, with the same blacked out trim

But I don't have a front license plate. Looks good ;)

The law is sketchy about that in Texas. If anything, I'm going to get the grimspeed plate bracket that mounts into the tow hook.

Did you take the chrome side strips off to do that? If so - how difficult is it to get them off? Not so sure I want to spray paint with them on the car.....

I did the same thing, but with them on the car. I wish I would have taken them off. You can't really get a good coat by taping off the car because some of the trim is under the rubber seals.

I took the trim off and it came out great. Instructions here:

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/plans-replacing-painting-chrome-trim-around-windowsi-134959p7.html?highlight=windows

page 7, about half way down the page

This will take some time....at least 2-3 hours including drying time. Move slowly and be careful.

Yeah, there is no "easy" way to do this. Taping it would take just as long.

Taking the trim off lets you get 100% coverage though.

i did all the trim in 3m matte black vinyl he is what it looks like

You got good coverage on the lower window trims? I had a shop use vinyl but could not get good coverage on the lower trim. Some slivers of chrome were showing. The shop could not get the vinyl to lineup perfectly against the rubber.

So, I removed the vinyl and plastidip'd it. Maybe I need to find a better shop to wrap the trim.

I can get some pic of it when the weather clears here its snow/rain in my area but i can say i do not have any chrome showing issues. the took the weather trim off the car and wrapped it. I dont know if that helps at all but im happy with how it turned out. I know the owner of the shop so we did it on a night it was slow and it took about an hour and a half to do the entire car.

Mask it.

Thanks, but I don't know how to mask off an elliptical shape. Do you use tape? What do you use to cut away the masking material without scratching the emblem? I'm a total noob at this haha, and I appreciate the help.

Thanks,

-Ben

P.S. Sorry for reviving this old thread

It's been awhile since I did this, but I think the outer ring and inner wing come apart, so you don't do anything with the Subaru emblem.

Correct. You only have to worry about masking the emblem if you want to black out the chrome on the emblem surround. Otherwise masking shouldn't be that hard. Just cover the whole damn thing in tape and go at it with a utility knife. The emblem is inset pretty deep, you shouldn't have any problems finding the outer groove.
