Anyway - whan you say "winter gas" - do you really have any evidence for different fuel during the winter and summer or is it just a tale?

 

I know that diesel used to be that way over here, but that's another story.

Ideally. Stoichiometric A/F ratios are highly dependent on the detergent and conditioning packets "cut" into pure gasoline. Not to mention all of the ethanol now dumped into fuel, I haven't seen any place that doesn't sell E10. The more "stuff" in gasoline, the lower that stoichiometric ratio gets. What comes out of the pump PROBABLY drives that number closer to 14.2-14.3:1. Non-uniformity make it harder still. Shell is going to be different than Gulf and Exxon. Just the nature of the beast.

 

Regarding efficiency, I don't believe any Subaru engine to be greater than 20% efficient. Just look at stock EGT's in the turbo cars, it's not uncommon to see 800C from time to time. All that heat is energy not going into making power. Cooler EGT's lead to inherently more efficient engines. But the process by which you lower EGT's, you are forced to lose efficiency in other ways. Things like direct injection are really pushing the efficiency envelope, though. Same with Valvetronic type systems (like in the new single turbo BMW's).

Interesting experiments I've been doing.

 

I drive ~100 miles/day, almost all highway.

 

My normal commute is done at ~80mph or so and I was getting 20mpg in winter. In the summer, the same commute at the same speed was getting me around 22.5mpg.

 

I decided to see what would happen if I kicked it down to 60mph for the duration of my commute. The result? Two consecutive tanks of almost 25mpg. The two tanks before this were filled at the same fuel station right by my office.

 

20mph slower means a 20% increase in winter fuel economy. Not too bad. Each leg of my commute is 47 miles, so that's only a ~10 minute difference. Leaving 10 minutes earlier in the morning actually puts me ahead of traffic which is nice.

I hear ya. I look down at the trip meter once in a while and see an average of 24-25mpg hwy and bitch to myself. All the while doing 80. I had a flat on the rear and swapped the donut spare so I had to drive 55 tops. I broke 30mpg which I never managed to do in my Legacy GT ever since owning it.

I can't wait until it's spring and we are back on "summer fuel". I bet I could break the 30mpg mark if the gas station next to my office didn't sell E10.

i THINK my mpg (and my wifes 05) does not calculate MPG while you're wheels are at a stop. they must be moving for the mpg to start calculating... So, your idle/stop light time, isnt factored into your mileage.

for me, the idle time is. I watch the average drop when i'm idle for long periods of time.

 

Same here. I don't gauge fuel economy by the dash display, i just use it as a relative indicator. I track economy according to odometer and fuel up volume.

my dash display buries at 100mpg when im at a standstill, so im assuming, its not recording.

 

Mine reads --- with the needle on the far left...

I'd been using my work blackberry to track fuel economy over the past couple of years, but lost that data when the blackberry bit the dust. For the past few months I've been using an android app to keep track of my fuel. I just put that data into fuelly.com, which I'd not heard of before, and I like what I see. Esp the free part. :)

 

My 05 LGT is getting some decent mileage, consider the list of mods. I'm quite pleased. The first entry was e85, the subsequent have been either 91 or 93 octane.

Mixed driving nets me about 22 MPG every tank. Stage 2, manual tranny.

 

I do have a lead foot on the highways and on ramps though.

 

 

Sucks that since I moved in July, I now spend about $450.00 just on gas.

 

 

Where's a 92 Civic VX when you need one?!

Per month my friend! It's crazy!

 

Every two months or so I run my gas expenses through my company and I cut myself a thousand dollar cheque.:eek:

 

 

If I was paying for gas on my own dime, the car would have been sold for a (naturally aspirated) 4 cyl sedan or small SUV by now.

I spend a solid $550/month in fuel. It sucks.
