If you hadn't mentioned anything about the cars in the background I hadn't given them a second thought since at a first glance it basically looks like any generic European parking lot. (Aside from the lack of wagons, but that's more a Scandinavian treat)

Double-fail? It's hilarious that the M3 you chose to picture here is the ONLY generation M3 not actually represented in the spy shots! (There are 5 of the older gen and 1 each of the later gens.)

As for the Subie, I am really liking what I see here! The only thing I'm wondering about is that I thought this thing was supposed to be a hatchback..? I'm not seeing the hinge mounting points at the top of the rear window that should be there if this was a hatch. It looks to me like it has a "notchback" trunk lid. This would disappoint me greatly. I want hatchback functionality from this vehicle!

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

In other words: SEARCH before you post!

It's hilarious you think that was the point of me posting those two pictures.

Not up to par with what though?

It's not going to do 13 second quarters out of the box without a turbo.

This is going to be like a Miata...without the ghey.

Actually, right manufacturer, wrong car, IMHO. This will be much more like an RX-8. Unconventional engine, lower center of gravity, 2-door that seats 4 (I believe the new Coupe will seat 4?), etc..

Performance probably won't be that different from the current RX-8 either. That has 232 hp in 6MT, 212 hp in 6EAT, 159 tq. I could easily imagine the 2.0l engine to do 200 hp/140-150 tq. Ok, so the RX-8 is maybe 3-400 lbs heavier (if 2600-2700 lbs is accurate - no one has confirmed that yet). Sure, that'll make some difference. But, IMHO, the new coupe's 0-60 will be 6.x or 7.x, not 5.x.

Why Subaru Went Rear-Wheel Drive With The BRZ

One of the biggest mysteries puzzling Subaru fans is the issue of why the Japanese automaker, after building its performance reputation on symmetrical all-wheel drive technology, would switch to rear-wheel drive for its upcoming BRZ sports car.

Of course, a lot of it has to do with the fact that the BRZ is being jointly developed with Toyota, which will sell the car as the Scion FR-S here in the U.S. though it may revive the Celica name elsewhere.

From the start of the project, Toyota was adamant that it wanted a rear-wheel drive sports car.

But why not offer an all-wheel drive option on the BRZ to please loyalists? Or at least help differentiate it further from Toyota’s version?

Subaru’s product planning chief and head developer of the BRZ, Toshio Masuda, has revealed to us that the joint-developed sports car was originally conceived by Subaru and that there were several reasons why his design team didn’t want it to be all-wheel drive.

2011 Scion FR-S ConceptToyota’s intentions notwithstanding, Masuda explained that Subaru wanted to showcase its road-holding and traction expertise in a rear-wheel drive application.

Subaru already sells front-wheel drive cars in markets outside the U.S., so launching a new rear-wheel drive model was the final frontier, so to speak, where the automaker could implement its latest engineering knowhow.

Masuda also pointed out that some of Subaru’s all-wheel drive models have been tested during development with up to 90 percent of their torque being sent to the rear wheels, virtually mimicking the dynamics of a rear-wheel drive car.

And the results of this knowhow speaks for itself. Prototypes of the BRZ have been tested at speeds above 50 mph in heavy snow--something normally unthinkable in a lightweight rear-wheel drive sports car.

Key to its prowess will be its very low center of the gravity of around 17.8 inches, one of the lowest of any car currently on the market.

Look out for the respective debuts of both the Subaru BRZ and its Scion FR-S sibling at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show this December. First sales are scheduled to start in the first half of next year.

In the meantime, click here our latest report on all its planned specs.

As they said elsewhere on that link: they "hope" to still come in under $30K. Wouldn't be the first time a Toyota sports coupe has priced itself out of the market... Of course, it's not my kettle of fish to begin with: as a family of four, we need a 4-door vehicle..

The disappointment continues

http://www.leftlanenews.com/subaru-brz.html

Nearly one month ago to the day the world finally learned the official name for Subaru’s take on the FT-86, which was officially dubbed “BRZ.”

Today, we have learned a few new details on this highly secretive and allusive car, including the fact that it will be revealed with non-production sheetmetal at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show, according to sources speaking with Car and Driver. The same sources also suggested that whatever form the car eventually takes, it will be identical to the Toyota/Scion version save for fascia and badging swaps, despite the belief that the cars might have unique styling.

Toyota and Subaru also allegedly agreed not to show a single production-intent body panel until the cars make their full debuts at the Tokyo Auto Show in December, meaning all of the previews we have seen thus far have likely only been intended to hold the public over and possibly test reactions for design themes or cues, rather than exact designs.

It is also expected that the car will in fact report for duty with 200 horsepower thanks to a Subaru block that makes use of Toyota port-and-direct-injection technology. Subaru will construct its own, the Toyota (global markets) and Scion variants at a single plant in Gunma, Japan, beginning Spring 2012.

The disappointment continues

What disappointment?

I think everyone knew there were going to be same car, save some front end tweaks to make it look like a subaru. I'm sure the interior will be a little different too. It doesn't make much sense to comingle on a design and then change it completely so they look different.

As for the hp number, in that small of a car, with boxer torque, it's gonna feel quick. And they never ruled out a turbo. I'd say an STI version is in the works.

The only disappointment I beleive will be the price. We are all expecting a cheap sporty coupe. So far with everything they are delivering, I would hope it is in the mid 20's. But it sounds like it's going to be high 20's low 30's. For that price, I'd just buy an LGT or WRX.....

Agreed. 4-door WRX is much more functional for around the same price. Now if they just had a 5EAT version (for traffic - man, that (*&@#$ traffic. I'm contemplating leasing a Leaf just to use the commuter lanes due to that (*&@#$ traffic)...
