JDM 20MM Rear Sway Bar Install Instructions (w/pics)

Quit being a nancy!! :D No worries whatsoever.....I have pushed hard and no issues.....just better handling.

Always respect your opinion. But, man, did the Legacy handle fabulous last weekend. The WRX never could handle the corners as fast. Seemed there was no limit.

Don't ask how I did. There were medical issues involved. Too complicated to discuss here.

It's the multilink rear. It's more advanced and won't bite you like the WRX did. We had a WRX wagon.....I know all too well about the back end coming around with bigger rear bars. The LGT wagon is different....it always stays composed and wants to rotate (more now with the 20mm).

It's an easy 30 minute install. Why not swap it in for the next track event and give yourself a few hours to get used to it? At least that way, if you push to hard and it does something unexpected....all you hurt are some cones and your pride. ;)

I knew I could count on you. Didn't know the rear suspensionon the Legacy reacts different. There's still the SCCA regs about rear sway bars. Of course, who would know?

Do you know if there's anyway to increase the RPM limiter to 72-7500. I know it's not fair. But I sure would like to get another 50 yards out of 2nd gear. Now I'm talking about cheating again. Sorry.

well.....the 20mm bar is what Subaru spec'ed for the car in most markets and it looks no different, so I think you'd be fine.

Wasn't that included with a 22mm front bar?

JDM is 21mm in the front - exactly the same as USDM. Otherwise we'd likely be having requests to send the JDM front bar as well. ;)

Basically, once you put in the JDM 20mm rear, you have the same setup as the JDM cars (except for the dampers/springs).

21 front IIRC

Stock US front bar is 17mm? That's a big jump to 22 rear.

What about the RPM limiter increase. Any way of doing it?

Further note: On the Spec B in Japan, they went to a 18-19mm rear bar to offset the stiffer springs/dampers on that model. So the 21mm front/20mm rear setup is designed for the softer suspended GT, which is why it works well on the even softer suspended Legacy GT in America.

But if you go aftermarket the end links are obviously different, and stronger. I've heard of the stock nylon (?) end links breaking.

so, with my Spec B setup and 21 front / 20 rear I get the best of both worlds huh??

You probably have a bit more rotation than a stock Spec B, but nothing dangerous. The current suspension design is leaps and bounds ahead of the BE/BH-era cars when they first came out and had big snap oversteer problems!

Even with my relatively aggressive setup right now, with the HKS coilovers set near the high end and with the rear tightened up further, it is very neutral.

I'm convinced. Sorry about tying up so much web space. Most productive session I've ever had on a forum.

Where would you recommend getting a 20mm bar? How much?

Just noticed a sodium high pressure light light in front of the house was fixed with just a new bulb. That saves $100. 1/2 the cost of the sway bar.

Nobody has replied to the RPM limiter issue yet. My life would be complete if I could solve that.

USDM Legacy GT - 22mm front / 16mm rear

JDM Legacy GT - 22mm front / 20mm rear

Put the bar on and you'll really see the car's handling sharpen and tighten with no adverse effects. I loved how the car tightened up with just this small mod.

Did the switch this weekend...piece of cake according to the instructions.

The only question I had was which way to put the bushings on? With the split up or down?

Or does anyone think it matters?

Handling was *much* improved....closer to my old Contour SVT and not near as "wiggly" on curves.

A curve that I generaly take(nervously) at about 45mph felt fine at 60mph now.

Cheers, dave:lol:

Drive softly and carry big torque!

Glad you are enjoying the change. I put the bushings on with the split down so that any moisture can drain out through the bottom, not that it probably matters and the instructions weren't clear.
