DRoc7822
Nobody helped me with pics on the 5eat rear end. looks nothing like the ones posted here. Was the manual center diff dip stick compatible with the yellow auto one? The blue ones have a longer handle and stem than the yellow ones we get. I noticed this too actually. I just went and tried to do this and was dumbfounded when nothing looked like it does in the thread. Thank you for letting us know they are 10mm bolts. I also got the wrong tool for the transmission plug. I thought it was the T70 but I guess thats only for the manual transmission... and a 8mm Hex for the 5EAT. f10ants
Ok you guys are gonna seriously bust my balls on this but I have an 06 non-gt automatic , I bought new from the dealer. All original tranny and rear end fluids in it. I don't have a good excuse why they aren't done but I'm fixing it I PROMISE!! How much $$ do you think this service would cost at the dealer vs doing it yourself? Super impressed with the write up btw Inigo Montoya.

maniaxzero
Thanks OP for the pictorial.. I finally got this done.. Took some pics: http://i.imgur.com/oWM2c.jpg Nasty transmission drain plug http://i.imgur.com/5Ou6z.jpg draining my MT tranny/front diff http://i.imgur.com/r6gwK.jpg my 3" greddy evo 2 exhaust made it difficult to jack up the diff. http://i.imgur.com/Gqr61.jpg The greddy got in the way again when I try to loosen the lower drain plug on the rear diff. http://i.imgur.com/VFrd6.jpg http://i.imgur.com/fA8O3.jpg What I learned today: -The walmart supertech 75w90 synthetic blend works very well especially at only $5/quart . My shifts are buttery smooth compared to the factory fluid from before. I'm @ 56k miles. -Use PB Blaster -Have a breaker bar ready and be ready to kick it -Jack the car high enough so you have enough room to kick the breaker bar -exhaust can be a pain in the butt when doing rear diff. If i had a short 1/2" extension, it would work alot better. I had to use a long extension I had in my toolbox. Like OP said, there's really no way to loosen the bottom bolt without an extension of some sort due to the exhaust -Harbor Freight multi purpose transfer pump works very good. It's on sale now for $5. http://www.harborfreight.com/multi-use-transfer-pump-66418.html -very messy job. have paper towels and rags ready. If you can, avoid doing it on your driveway. I was being very careful and still spilled some oil on the driveway..
ShrinerMonkey
Instead of kicking the breaker bar, I just used the jack against the breaker bar handle....carefully. Kicking at something under a car on jack stands is a good way to kick the bucket.

BoostWagon
+1 on thanks to OP. Just did mine this eve for the first time on my own, truly was simple. Only goof was testing the clearance without jacks/blocks on my brand new catch pan, then forgetting I'd left it under the car and driving off, rolling over the pan in the process. Miracusously it survived, turns out the caps are the same as washer fluid bottles
Merc6
Still searching for the 5eat arse end pics. Were they both on the side instead of the back as pictured in this whole thread? 2005 Satin White Pearl Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Unlimited 5EAT (Project Car) 2019 Agate Black Ford Explorer XLT 4WD (DD)
mwm5094
Merc, there are 2 bolts right on the passenger side of it IIRC. Just like all the pics you have seen, just on the side.

apexi
Done my MT fluid 3-4 times now and today was the first time 1/4 of the fluid decided it didn't want to stay in the drain pan. I don't know if it was the force of the fluid coming out or what, but somehow it deflected out of the empty drain pan. Oh well, just felt like complaining since it made a smelly mess on my garage floor.
halwith
Thank you Shrinermonkey! the jack works quite well. it was a forester so no need for jackstands or ramps.
outahere
I did this yesterday on my 2006 2.5i w/5MT,...............Filled through the dipstick hole with Mobil 1 75-90LS. Capacity is supposed to be 3.7 US quarts. Put in 3.5 quarts, checked the level, and (CRAP!) it was a little over the full mark already, by about 3/16". ............Lowered the car and went back and checked the level in the front, still overfull by about 3/16". Cleaned up, went for a ride, didn't notice any difference at all (but I also had no problems). Let the car cool off over night and checked the level in the front again this morning, still 3/16" over the full mark. .......................... Pretty much my experience too, with the 5MT. The car is on jack stands, sitting level (checked with laser level), and after draining the old gear oil for an hour, I added 3.5L (3.7qt) of new oil, and the dipstick read about 1/4" over the full mark. WTH. So I checked how much oil was in the drain pan, and I measured only 3.0L. Maybe the trans takes 3.5L when it is dry and brand spanking new, but in a refill situation I think it takes about 3.0L. The next time I do a trans oil change, I'm only buying 3L.
liquid167
Yea i dont understand either i dont want my tranny having to much oil in it to be air raided but i put exactly 3.25 qaurts in and was over. Can anyone tell me the amount of oil that the dipstick reads between the two holes im preety sure its half a qaurt.

MNRZR
For those that use Amsoil, do you run a LSD additive in the rear diff as well or just straight Amsoil? Thanks for the write-up Inigo Montoya!
Silinc3r
Yes great write up and I will be doing this within the next 1000 miles. Just bought the car and don't know whats been done. Silinc3r's 05 SWP GT/Spec B
mungewell
MNRZR asked about LSD additives.... I'd like to know too. Manual calls for GL-5 oil. I believe that the rear diff on the LGT (limited only?) is a LSD, so would require oil with friction modifiers. I'm guess that you don't want to put that in the main MT (but maybe OK in AT's front diff). Can anyone confirm?
