magnetic1
Purdy. I need to see pics of these brakes installed on the car Great price. Any chance of getting a match rear set? Hey VT, No rears at the moment. We really wanted to get going on the fronts first. The tooling required to make brackets for the rear for such a low volume run would end up costing quite a bit. Plus it would require tons of testing to get the bias, brake forces, etc right since it would require much larger rotors. My main "turn-on" with this kit is the super wide variety of pads available. Especially if you track the car. Youre talking track pads that are half the price of normal LGT track pads!!! Hawk HT10s run only about $130! DTC70s are $165ish! Similar pricing for PFC01, etc! For street pads, pricing is on par w/ the stock stuff though. Maybe $5-$10 less. But again, lots more options on pad manufacturers. fweasel
Do these willwood calipers have dust boots? They historically do not and these pictures seem to indicate the same thing. Hawk HT10s run only about $130! DTC70s are $165ish! Similar pricing for PFC01, etc!One of the primary reasons I swapped out my stock calipers to the Brembos. Those pad prices are INSANE! This coming from someone who just blew through a set of HT-10's in a single day. ignore him, he'll go away.
magnetic1
Actually the dust boots are a much smaller issue than most make it out to be. If the piston is made from higher quality materials such as stainless steel (most calipers use aluminum w/ a rubber dust boot), it can hold up very well. We've seen many Wilwood caliper kits for numerous cars for many years that continue to be trouble free. If you look carefully at calipers with dust boots, they are far from being hermetically sealed. Xenonk
Does Wilwood sell a piston replacement or rebuild kit for these calipers? Or are these the new generation of calipers that require less servicing than the older Wilwood calipers that were known to have a rebuild cycle of about 15,000 miles of spirited driving? magnetic1
Keefe, we've seen club racers and street cars use these calipers for years without rebuilds. Comparing that to those who track with stock calipers that need annual rebuilds, that is a pretty good sign. But if you really feel like you do want to rebuild the caliper, rebuild kits are only $9.88 Free Sonax Cleaner Deal http://www.brakeswap.com Carbotech, Hawk, PFC, DBA Rotors, Motul, Wilwood, Castrol... Underdog
They sure are pretty, but would this be a worthwhile upgrade for a street driven car (given the car is already equipped with appropriately sticky tires)? How would running this kit affect the brake bias? Would you need to run the same brand/type of pad and rotor in the rear? I really like that matte/machined look too! magnetic1
It would improve brake feel, and modulation (and looks ) but whether that is worthwhile to you is a decision you need to make There are plenty of people who dont see the track w/ StoPTech, Brembo, etc calipers and kits. Bias should not change. No need to run same brand/type in rear for the street. You can though and pads are cheap. The main draw is that you can get any type of pad for this caliper ULTRA-cheap! mikeyan
i haven't been to the track with the stoptechs yet (been on the car for a few weeks now), but they're pretty damn good for street use . Would i pay full price them? I'm not sure yet. But the double-assurance you get that you're going to stop in a panic situation is worth it to me. mikeyan
probably, but damn if i passengers haven't commented on high speed stops versus before the brakes were in. And these were passengers that had no idea i did anything to the car. It definately feels like the car is stopping a helluva lot better. Would i have paid full price for them? i'm still not sure. But i got an amazing deal Mike PS When i put them on, i really had no expectations for them. Already had upgraded pads and lines. I've been pretty darn impressed though. Xenonk
what's the minimum wheel size needed to fit, 17x7.5? I think Magnetic1 had these calipers in mind to fit over the stock rims. Keefe
magnetic1
Should fit over stock wheels. Im scheduling a production run for the mounting hardware and should be able to start pre-orders for the first 10 sets or so next week. (With a pre-order sale price!) The target retail is $1299, so pre-order will likely fall in below that. Keep in mind this comes with EVERYTHING. Rotors, pads, lines (front AND rear), hardware and calipers. Underdog
Hmm... I'll probably be due for a brake upgrade by then and compared to the other kits out there (Pads, Rotors, Lines, Fluid) that go for ~$700, this is a great deal! I'd be interested to see how well these hold up in New England type conditions, with longevity equal or greater than the stock components as the baseline. I'm also wondering how we would source pads and rebuild kits several years down the line... are they common enough that parts would be readily available? Just to answer some of your questions: These calipers have been tested and used in many applications including salt, etc. (just not specifically on the LGT). As far as pads go, the Wilwood Superlite calipers take a standard pad size and is available through numerous vendors. As far as rebuild kits go, there are many Wilwood dealers who carry rebuild kits, or they can be sourced directly from Wilwood. Hope that helps! Dr.Chris
I think the rear that he mentioned was for the SS lines, not the calipers. 2011 WRX Hatch currently. Looking for OXT or FXT for new daily to go with the WRX.
magnetic1
^^ Front only... but still a great deal considering the pads, rotors, and lines (f&r) come with it... I forgot, and fluid I might add the option of rear slotted rotors and pads for a small added charge. Since you'll be changing out the rear lines anyways, might as well do rotors/pads while youre there. Underdog
Sounds great to me! With my suspension all upgraded, the braking already feels better. After this, I'm gonna need to mod the "go" to match all the "whoa"... I would really like to paint the rear calipers to match the matte finish of the wilwoods. Right now all my calipers are a grey/green oxidized color. Would you recommend the hawk ceramic pads (mentioned in the OP) and slotted rotors for daily-drivers, or do they need track conditions to get to operating temp.?
