Useful is a key term in that sentence, useful in racing in towing, turbo diesel trucks get 25mpg and can tow damn near triple what you truck can does that make them more useful?

They are pretty damn useful, and also really expensive. A good friend of mine has a pretty nicely modded Duramax (LB7), it's pretty quick for a big truck. he is running a programmer, turbo back exhaust, and an intake.

He got about 19-20mpg with the old diesel fuel, now he is down to 18-19 on the new ULSD. I also subscribe to Diesel Power (great tech articles) and the best I have seen any of the really highly modded "race/pull" trucks get is 20-21mpg. Nothing to sneeze at for a big powerful fast vehicle, but it's not 25mpg.

The lie-o-meter in my friend's truck also claims 24.5mpg on the highway, but hand calculation shows the lie-o-meter to be wrong.

I eagerly await a diesel 1/2 ton though, I am a buyer when they get here and the emissions gear gets sorted out.

Diesel Tacoma on its way for you. That is if you want another Toyota truck.

It'll need to be a 1/2 ton and the Tacoma is not a 1/2 ton. Toyota has plans for a diesel Tundra by 2011 or so, and that is about the right time frame for me.

A lot of people seem to comment about not liking the hood scoops and pontiac nostrils or kidneys, or whatever one calls them...

I kinda like those, actually. I think they look pretty sinister. I hate the ones on the G6 GXP, though.

I just don't like the blah lower air dam part. it is kind of boring. The Commodore and even HSV cars have much more aggressive bumper covers. It will be interesting to see what aftermarket styling comes out for the G8.

I'd probably go for red G8 non-GT tail lights, though, or completely black ones with LED elements. The red-circle under a lens "altezza-style" are way too cheesy and over done. It was interesting on the Altezza/IS300 for about 10 minutes. Now it is ruined.

The black G8 does look hawt. I like the bright red ones I've seen pictures of, as well, or bright blue. Copper Orange is a very distinctive color, but I don't think I would buy one for myself that color.

I tend to like the SLP Firehawk, especially with the fixed-headlight mod.

Aftermarket wheels do well on those cars. I also tend to like the de-cladded look of the Firebird Formula, over the TA. But all of them look better than the Camaro. But the interior is tragically wrong. Rubbermaid and Preskool had a convention on almost ALL of the GM interiors of that era.

I am not the utmost F-body fan, so I don't mind saying that I have no idea why they are so wedded to the body-color painted B-pillar arch "basket handle", or even on the Corvette for that matter. I like the blacked out canopy look much better on those cars. That is the nicest part of the appearance of the ZR1, is the CF treatment on that part.

If I could have one built to my spec,

Firebird Formula t-top body, with SLP headlights and ram air hood without horizontal split.

Staggered fitment 17 or 18 inch nice wheels

big brakes

IRS rear suspension (if there is an aftermarket option)

well-tuned front suspension and steering.

Tuned small block, 350-400hp street tune is fine with me.

6-speed stick, robust rear end with a torsen or other limited slip diff.

quiet but authoritative aftermarket exhaust. (not that choked GM gargle sound that some Pontiacs have)

Aftermarket seats

and somehow a complete dashboard and interior upgrade without the playskool look, and exaggerated roundness.

I would certainly enjoy that car as a fun machine.

And basically, substitute a 4-door body, and a bit more weight, that fairly adequately describes the G8 GT.

I saw them unloadinging the G8 at my friends studio and they look great. They should be here soon.

The interior on the Trans Ams and Formulas were alot nicer than the carmaros, the only camaro i liked was the SS if the suspension had it sitting right. They actually sell dash and door panel upgrade kits for 120bucks and they take like 1 hour to install, as far as IRS the live axel is much easier to launch with but i agree IRS is better for handling however you would also add alot of weight, IRS is about 100-200lbs more than the live axels. As far as 350hp-400hp goes, they come with 350 so thats already done, with bolt ons you can make 400 at the crank. It was a great car for what i needed it for, speed and i love t-tops, if you havent ever owned a car with t-tops you need to try it atleast once. I have a targa top car it doesnt compare because with the targa top off you loose soo much frame strength. The T bar keeps the car solid.

I am more of a handling guy than a drag racer, anyway.

200lbs in the back, minus a bit of weight at the front, and it might even have even weight distribution. :D

I've not had a car with T-tops, but I have always liked them. Later F-bodies, or 80's Fox mustangs both look great with t-tops.

My father was always a downer on those, though. My uncle had a 70's mustang Cobra II, and the glass t-top on one side popped off at highway speed. Nobody was so enthused after that, but that was before my time, or at least when I was too young to remember. I always imagined it somewhat like ejecting the canopy from a military jet, but I can see why he was less than impressed. wonderful 70's build quality. :D

I am sure most cars don't have that issue.

But I still love cars with transparent roof pieces. Sunroof, glass panel, t-top, whatever. I know it is heavier, and what-not, but what the hey...

And it seems, with almost all new cars getting the A-C pillar arches, with "separate" roof panels between the rain rails, it almost begs for glass roof treatments, including the G8.

I saw this car at the LA Auto Show and it looks great, except from the back, which isn't even terrible, it's just plain disgusting. They spent a lot of time on everything else and it seems like they took 3 seconds to design the rear. I like rears (on women too;)) and fell for the LGT when I was behind one stuck in traffic.

The Legacy looks better.

But the G8/Commodore doesn't look half bad, despite the fruit-flavored color. It looks like some sort of candy.

The back is a bit bland, that is true. But I don't necessarily think it horrifically ugly. Just a bit blank.

I wish the HSV rear tail light treatment were better. I like the theory, but it just doesn't jive well. Maybe if the HSV round tail lights wrapped all the way from the rear fender, to the trunk lid edge, instead of having the inboard round edge, when there really isn't a whole lot of other round details in the bodywork.

I really kinda like the HSV front bumper cover. I wonder if the Pontiac G8 GXP will get that bumper cover with the pontiac double grille between the headlights, and fitted to the Pontiac trunk.

At least with aussie parts, there are some interesting options for bodywork mods. :D The GXP (I still don't like that moniker, but I doubt they'll change it.) will be interesting to see.

Or, with a few more body part changes, perhaps a more lux-look... With a split grille, and a pontiac arrowhead, this could be easily be a Bonneville. It is very unfortunate that they dropped that name. I didn't mind that they shared it with Triumph motorcycles. Very little crossover between british bikes and american lux-performance sedans.
