At what point did your car stop being a "sleeper"

Mine is still a sleeper, other than fellow Subie owners other peaple just think it's a really nice looking "grocery getter"

Went up with my neighbor last night who has a Perfect 04 Mach1 with 1,900 miles on it. The wagon was fresh off a detail so I parked it beside his & we continued to get comments about how it was funny to see a wagon beside the Mach1.

I was fairly silent BC I really wasnt there for myself. My neighbor went on to tell many of the onlookers that performance wise there was really no comparison between the 2. his quote.....

"That wagon is a screamer"

Most of the onlookers continued to say yea.....right;)

haha mine is a screamer i have an exhaust cut out.

Are you even able to compare a Mach 1 with a Legacy Wagon? I think that it's better to compare the Mach 1 with a Laverda Jota (http://www.classicbikes.co.uk/machine2.html) both screams for attention and are a lot more brutal in handling and appearance than the Subaru Legacy. You may compare the Mach 1 with the Impreza STi, because that's also a car known for it's potential.

The Legacy shall be compared with other sleeper cars like the MB 280E of the mid 70's - many assumes at first look that it's a diesel or a simple 200/220 - until proven wrong. The 280 has some extra trim that for the well-initiated indicates what it is, but for the common man it's no deal.

Another real sleeper is the MB 300SEL 6.3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_300SEL_6.3), but this is in another division where the Legacy doesn't play.

And even if you add dual exhausts to the Legacy it's so common (at least over here in Sweden) that nobody really cares or thinks that it has any extra potential. It's more saying "Rice" or even just "duh" than taking it out of sleeper mode. A hood scoop is a bit different, that is a more telltale indicator of something more potent, as are rim size (but this can also scream Rice) and the presence of red painted brake calipers (which usually doesn't scream Rice). So if you want to retain sleeper status with your Brembo:s - paint them matte black or dirt-colored. Tinted windows is a thing that can say to others that "I like mods" - which makes the car less sleeper-like.

Two other steps that increases the sleeper mode is if the car is a wagon and if it has a towing hitch. Yet another thing is if it has roof rails - which indicates that it's rather a pack mule than a potent car. (but it can be both :p )

And choose your bumper sticker with care!

I'm still a sleeper but here in Trinidad once you drive a Subaru.........there will always be a road challenge. I have a JDM Spec B so i'm toast......but i usually toast their asses anyway!

I used to take my stock wagon to the track. No Porsche owner is ever going to believe they got passed by a wagon, let alone, one with no mods. I slowly modded my suspension & brakes over the summer and kept passing same Porsches. By summer's end, only a few were willing to play. When I came back the next year with the sleeper I have today, it was like shooting fish in a barrel.

BTW, congrats on bumping a 6 year old thread. :-)

I'd like to think mine's a sleeper (especially with my OEM wheels on, that have my summers)...

stickers plus custom lip plus blingy wheels (oem or not) kind of taints the sleeper part. Still a nice look.

Ever since I installed my SPT v2 CBE, I no longer feel like like my car is a sleeper. My OZ racing ultralegerras with my summer tires aren't helping the sleeper look either.

Turbo swap, turboback exhaust, and 550lb spring rates put an end to my definition of "sleeper." But the faster the car gets, the more I realize that short of going VTA EWG with red Rally Armor mud flaps and straight pipe exhaust, the LGT will pretty much ALWAYS be a sleeper in the grand scheme of the cars on the road. I'm not talking 90's Ford SHO on 20+psi level of sleeper, but sleeper nonetheless. I am constantly underestimated in the LGT, and I love it.

Nice thread. Was wondering the same thing the other day since I installed LED tail lights and a new exhaust.

New exhaust. Not too apparent that the car means business, until you floor it.

Three days later. New LED tail lights.

The sleeper is no more I suppose, but on the other hand I haven't noticed any difference in traffic. Will see how people react at the track this summer. Last year the organizers at the gate were like "Are you driving...this?".

I assume my car is a sleeper, because no ricers or punks toy with me. My buddy used to get crap daily with his STOCK wrx. I figure, if I go unnoticed 99.9% of the time, I must be at least a pseudo-sleeper :)
