mccorry
I've done many of these now and I've ALWAYS had to remove the passenger side manifold... Then again... I never jack up the motor...

keithk831
Bump for a really old thread! I'm going to be installing an STi uppipe pretty soon, along with a gutted downpipe (upper section). You guys think I should buy new gaskets, or would just using copper spray be fine?
Perrin713
Buy new gaskets :] I just installed my up a few weeks back and the dp is what is leaking tho. I installed new gaskets with the up but not the other gaskets. Going to rip her down this week and replace the dp gaskets.
scoobydoobie
definitely get new gaskets
keithk831
Great! Will do. Think I would be ok with the non-Subaru gaskets on eBay?
scoobydoobie
I wouldn't use ebay gaskets. OEM, Grimmspeed, or bust. Don't cheap out on something like gaskets. Trust me, you don't wanna take the UP back out to fix a crappy blown/torn gasket.
keithk831
Gotcha. So should I replace both uppipe gaskets, then? Also since i'm swapping out my oem upper downpipe with a gutted oem one, should I replace those as well, or wait and see?
scoobydoobie
All of them. If you drop the one side of the manifold during the UP install, replace that one as well.

I know you're right and why...it's just that gaskets can get pricey when you buy 5 of them

mccorry
Hell... just reuse all of the stock Subaru gaskets. I've done it twice on my car and no leaks at all.
Perrin713
I would replace the dp ones too. I just took my dp off and used the old gaskets and it leaks. Got it up on the stands right now about to rip it back down.
keithk831
I'm thinking i'm gonna buy new UP gaskets and reuse the rest (with the spray gasket stuff). That way if I do have leaks, it won't be too hard to get to them.
Perrin713
Do what you want, but I'd save yourself the hassel and buy new dps ones too. But, hey good luck with the install, its fun!

Yeah, that's what "they" tell me. But honestly, I haven't had an extremely difficult time doing any work on this car as of yet. But i'm used to GM FWD V6 cars with small engine bays so...yeah. keithk831
My STi uppipe just came in today! But a couple things... 1. It has a broken stud (which I knew about). But what I didn't know is that the stud is broken off inside the flange, so now i'm trying to drill it out. Lame. I ordered a new stud and it'll take like a week to get here, but in the meantime I have to deal with this. 2. Half the heatshield is loose. I didn't know about this at all. The whole thing slides up and down a little. Now i'm trying to decide if I want to keep the heat shield on and pay someone to tack weld it, or if I want to cut it off. What do you guys think? I do want to maintain a stock appearance, but do you think an uppipe without heat shields will stand out?
lgtgirl06
This might come in handy when mine goes on. It's sitting in the box right now. The weather is crappy here. Have to wait until it gets nicer.
keithk831
A side note (not sure if it was mentioned earlier or not). I found that it was nearly impossible to get the uppipe out with simply lifting the engine a little. We ended up removing a bolt from the engine mount (right by the exhaust manifold) and then lifting the engine a lot. Of course we were using a lift. But it was much easier that way. I don't even need to lift the engine or remove the mount bolt... it just twists 90 degress... a little wiggle... then out.

I suppose if you removed the EGT sensor completely, then it would wiggle out. But you also want to be careful around those aluminum cylinder heads. TSiWRX
Whether or not you need to jack the engine a little - or if the factory UP just slips out (with or without some contorting, with or without the EGT sensor) - seems to depend rather heavily on just how your particular car was put together. I also couldn't get my UP out of there, without jacking the engine...I had two other Subaru enthusiasts with me, so it wasn't just me being stupid. FWIW, it just varies. My recommendation to those undertaking hte UP mod is to simply be aware that this *could* be an issue, and know how to take care of it (and have a jack available), if it should come up - no pun intended. <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family
