This walk-thru has grown to 34 pages of fun. :)

I just have a couple questions before I pull the trigger on doing this mod. Looks like xenonexpert has some nice pre-wired kits available - does anyone have experience with these. While I see a lot of people using the Phillips bulbs here (which would be this kit: http://www.xenonexpert.com/philips_d2s_kit.html), is it really worth the extra $175 over the DDM/generic-bulb kit: http://www.xenonexpert.com/ddm_retrofit.html ?

Also, is there any other suggestions on where to buy RX330 projectors other than eBay and hidplanet? They seem fresh-out of the non-afs types at the moment... The same question goes for the lens - I like the sounds of the Celica lens, but am having issues tracking one down...

This has been a great walk-thru - thanks for all the work everyone has put in!

you can try other hid forums other than hid planet but the non-afs are a pain to track down. Mr. Luv had a whole setup for sale which would be all you need for the full retro. Send him a PM and be sure to tell him I sent you.

The lack of availability of the RX330 projectors is a pain. I've been looking for months.

Saw an older lady filling up her RX330 this morning at the gas station...... started to get bad ideas!

Yeah they are harder to come by. I saw one projector for sale yesterday for $20 shipped and was like

someone had already swooped up on it though so sadly I couldn't get it.

I saw the same one and was also like

Here's when I had a stock setup with just washer mod. 3 #6 washers per mounting location:

we have 3 mounting locations for the lens holder which is where these will go.

Ignore that there are 4 in this pic but this is where you put the 2 washers.

you put 2 between the shield and lens holder on all 3 locations that hold the lens holder.

  • 2 months later...

So, after having read this thread twice... I am becoming a bit intimidated on starting my retro project. It seems, for a retro newb, the non asf rx330 projectors would be the best way to go. However, I can not seem to find them anywhere. I have found tsx & mdx projectors.

So retro OG's, what do you think? Is the MDX D2S projector a close fit, what about the TSX? Am I just better trying to be patient and wait on the RX330 non asf projectors?

rx330 non asf should be easily found(try lighting forums and car-part.net...the MDX non hid ones were similar to stock legacy, not sure about MDX d2s...

TSX would require more thinking in doing...

I got a pretty good deal on the MDX D2S projectors. So I pulled the trigger. They are apparently fairly similar to the RX330 non asf projectors, but I guess I will find out.. I will post pictures and I am sure many questions when the arrive!

Thanks for being the guinea pig!

There was a set of these on ebay for a while, I was tempted to go for it but didn't want to take on yet another experiment with my car just yet. :)

Well, the projectors arrived today. Comparing the MDX projector assembly to the pics of the RX330 projectors on the first page, they look exactly the same. of course I am going to have to disassemble the housings to find out for sure. One notable difference, the lens appears to be clear (perhaps they are similar to the TSX lenses?). It's definitely not golf ball like in appearance. I am sure I will get a better idea when everything comes apart this weekend.

All that said, what do you Retro OG's think about lenses? The headlights the projectors are going into are from an 07 LGT. If memory serves me correctly, the LGT projectors will not be perfectly clear. Will it be better to go with the LGT lens, or the MDX lens?

My retro has begun! So far everything is going just like MiniStiGuy's walk through. I had to sand off the three nubs off the MDX buckets. After that the legacy shield fits just perfectly.

It does look like I need to do some work on the Legacy shields though. I have found oxidation on the cutoff line, and it results in the cut off looking very bumpy. With the lens off, I am unable to tell the difference between the LGT and MDX lens. However they both appear to be pretty clear.

Any recommendations on the squirrel finders? What materials did you guys use to seal yours up? How hot do you think the cut off shields get during operation?

^be very careful with the squirrel finders...because the piece of metal is thin, it can be damaged and pretty easily and while it may look normal to the eye any little movement can mess with your cutoff, i used putty that gets hard...not sure of actual name got it at autozone
