Does anyone have a distribution block type battery terminal with the multiple outputs? Pics? I'm considering getting one to make my setup a bit more clean.

If I were going to do this, I'd really want to try and do a solid-state (no moving parts) storage system. A couple of 4GB or 8GB CFII cards might work. I think I've seen somebody do it somewhere on the Interweb. Extreme temperatures will wreak havoc on spinning disks with a few microns separating head from platter. That concerns me.

Well I made it thru a hot summer. Let me see what winter brings. I could live with replacing the hard drive once a year but yes...i would switch to a flash memory at least for the operating system.

You can now get 32GB and I believe 64GB solid state drives. They're available options on the Dell notebooks I order.

Uhh... yeah but (1) they're only availble on selct models and (2) they currently add like $500 or so to the price tag above a more generic build.

I ran my CarPC all through last winter in Albany, NY and all through this summer here as well.

Still running strong. I'm not worried.

Honestly, if it only last two years or so, I can get a new drive. 2.5" HDD's aren't anywhere near as expensive as they used to be AND are much better at handling temperature change and heavy shock than they used to.

I'm told (though not from an authoritative source) that booting XP does a large number of small disk writes, which will wear out flash memory within a fairly small number of boot cycles. I don't know if "small" is on the order of 5, 50, 500, or 5000, but the guy I talked to said not to bother.

XP-Embedded has a feature called "enhanced write filter" that was added specifically to address this problem. Much as I like the idea of running without disks, I'm going to wait for XPe first.

Agreed.

My cousin works at Microsoft. He said that the reason that solid state storage hasn't taken off is not due to cost (although currently expensive). Longevity is the true reason. Although hard drives may theoretically wear out over time and are suceptible to damage, normal usage does not lower the performance/longevity as it does to solid state/flash storage.

Coming back from stand-by isn't as bad as booting from a cold state, but it still does require those minor writes as well.

Actually I would'nt mind asking him, he's a software engineer. Not on Windws though, he's on the XBox Development Team ;)

There's actually a lot of things built into operating systems that people don't know about. But then again...I don't know about them hah:lol:

The guys at mp3car.com have put together a way to enable EWF on Windows XP. EWF (Enhanced write filter) prevents Windows from writing back to the drive.

That would be sweet. I thought that code wasn't even in XP. Do you have a link? I just spent 15 minutes browsing search results for "EWF" over there and only found stuff about XPe, not straight XP.

Quick question - surely addressed before...so go ahead and kill the n00b.

I would like to start the DATA LOGGER in ENGINUITY directly - without going thru the main screen then clicking the Logger shortcut.

I have a car pc installed in my car and I love the "dashboard" one of the better ones out there - and there's no need for ELM scan and other tools. I can embed ENginuity in Centrafuse (my front end software) with no problems, but it would be awesome if my touchscreen shortcut tok me directly to the data logger. Any way of doing that ? Thanks.
