BOXRPWR
for those few of you interested in dyno performance of the "lesser" cars below the LGT/STI level, I found an interesting article in Automobile Mag online. they dyno tested the Mazdaspeed3, VW GTI, and Civic SI. here are the dyno results: MS3 http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/2336/ms3dynochartjm1.jpg GTI http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/1641/gtidynochartlb0.jpg Civic SI http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/9431/civicsidynochartuo9.jpg
Boostjunkie
holy mother of God the power falls off the table after 5500rpm on the MS3! At redline/fuel cut it looks to be making about 75whp and 55 lb/ft Yah for short shifting  . Makes nice power at in the meat of the band, but you certainly don't want to run it much past 5.5K

NovaWolverine
I saw that article, along with the little video they did. I know that they mentioned that the MS3 really ought to be retuned. I really like the GTI's powerband for a car w/ a turbo. And do you see that VTEC kick in on the SI?!
BOXRPWR
yeah, I fully agree with short shifting at 5,500 rpms. that's what I'm doing. trust me, that middle band feels pretty sweet. give the MS3 a little koodos. near 220 whp and 245 wtq on a pure stock setup is comparable to LGT Stg 1. furthermore, other data that Trey at Cobb reports that the MS3 stock ECU tune is pig-ass rich, especially as rpms rise. AFRs into the 9's but that's very, very good news in terms of easy power on tap with a proper ECU tune from the new AP that Cobb is selling for Mazdaspeeds. Trey stated that 30 / 30 gains are likely with a Stg 1 tune and zero mods. Just imagine what a Stg 2 setup might do. Yeah, yeah....before you say it, I know that's a lot of power to run through just the front wheels. But hell, at least I can run with the fAsTar cars! jsalicru
Hahaha, Kevin and I are now FWD ricers Look for the two ricers with the neon at the meets Man, I see the power my GTi puts out in that dyno and it makes me want to chip it... re-flash would put the GTi at ~200-210whp/240wtq "some say, his arms are made of coiled adamantium fibers. And that he tops his cereal with nuts and bolts. All we know is, he's called the Jose."

jsalicru
FWD FTW???? Naaaah.... Flash that thing. Not like you need a speed machine anymore though. This is very true... Lately the fix is on the bike. But, I must admit, it was nice to have my old STi back for a few days... it was not only WAY too cold to ride, but it was fun to go out and truly have fun in a car again. BOXRPWR
I know most of you guys don't give a darn about the Mazdaspeed3, but I'm finding out some darn interesting stuff. found this recent dyno plot from a MS3 with a Vishnu XEDE (pronounced x-cede) piggyback ECU box. it must be hardwired to the ECU so its not my cup of tea. but my goodness, there's a lot of untapped power in this little FWD scooter. Red plots are stock Blue are with XEDE http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a373/BOXRPWR/DynoMS3_stockandXede.jpg according to some other dyno plots I've seen, the factory ECU tune is way conservative. for instance, the AFRs fall into the 9's in the higher rpms. and the electronic boost controller limits peak boost to 13 psi and tapers to below 9 psi. yet the stock K-04 turbo can hold upwards of 16 psi to near 6k rpms. Cobb is developing a new AccessPort for the Mazdaspeeds. I can hardly wait!
NovaWolverine
congrats on the car, I really like the MS3 a lot. I'm kinda thinking about seriously considering one, but the FWD thing is really tough to swallow for me, at least make it rwd. The MS3 is definitely the best car in that class by far. BOXRPWR
thanks. it does offer quite a nice package for under $23k starting price. 6MT, ABS, TCS (traction control), DCS (skid control), 18" alum wheels. noice!
VTGT
Darn...In cold weather I'd imagine a stage one kit would put this sucker in high 12's low 13's with good launch. Nice
Barrok
I am still confused. You said you sold your legacy for financial reasons (you sold it for roughly 19k right?) Then you badmouthed the speed 3, then you went out and bought one for 23k :| Why not just keep your legacy? I must have missed something through your threads.. did it just tempt you to much to mod? BOXRPWR
yeah. its not the most logical story. you're right on the money about trying to get away from modding. I was spending more per month on mods than my car payment! my criticism of the MS3 driving position was premature. it grows on you. bottomline is I'm happy with my decisions. and a new LGT owner is happy too! http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a373/BOXRPWR/MS3%20clearbra/PICT0023.jpg http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a373/BOXRPWR/MS3%20clearbra/PICT0018.jpg
