Humming noise >40 mph = bad wheel bearing

Recommended Posts

It pays turning off the music in the car now and again :)

I'm glad I caught it in time, before it did bad things as I'd be driving 90mph on the expressway ...

Yes. turning of the radio is something I do from time to time. This was my first front wheel bearing. I now realize the early sign was it felt like a front tire was out of balance, only on some highway's. I even had the wheels balance twice.

After the new hub the wheel shimmy stopped. A year later I got the same feeling in the steering wheel. I then replaced the other front hub.

I found my rears were easier to hear with the radio off.

Wow, I'm glad I found this thread. I was worried that my differentials were going south. I did not realize that it's probably wheel bearings AND covered under a TSB. Hope I can get it to the dealer before my 8th year of warranty is out. 2005 Legacy GT Limited.

I'm having a similar noise from my passenger-side front and I'm not sure whether it's the CV axle or the wheel bearing. The dealer said the axle boot was torn, but I didn't see any of that when I was doing the downpipe install. I'll have to recheck it and see.

I already went through that. I had the passenger side axle boot tear and cv joint eat itself. Replaced that and only part of the noise went away. When I changed the drivers side front bearing, it was missing several of the bearings and was nearly completely destroyed.

Hi everyone

New member here. I have been having A LOT of trouble figuring out what is going on. Just a little background.... New subaru owner, bought a used 2005 subaru legacy GT about 3 months ago. Had a bad wheel bearing, got it fixed, no more loud noise. However, in the last month or so I have started hearing a pulsating whummmmm whummmmm whummmm noise but ONLY when i hit 40 mph. The noise is also a vibration that i can feel through the gas pedal and the floor. It pulsates and is not a constant noise like it was when i had a bad wheel bearing. Also, the noise goes away after i get up to about 60 (maybe the road nosie just drowns it out, i dont know.). Anyways, I have taken it to 2 mechanics and neither could figure out what the noise was because it only happens under load. One mechanic said it was probably my differential starting to fail. The other said it could be a lot of things and that i would just have to let it get worse. I can't wait.....its annoying and I dont want it to get worse and cause any more problems. The noise doesnt change when i turn, as long as i am going 40-60, the noise is there. the noise also increased with speed, or pulsates faster when i speed up, slower when i slow down. Any ideas???? I would really appreciate any input. Thanks!

Ever figure this issue out? I am having that same issue. Feeling vibration on my brake and gas pedals above 45 mph. Car is an automatic.

Took mine to Chicago's Mid-City Subaru for a suspected rear bearing..

1. They found a bad rear bearing BUT that even with only 74K miles, my extended warranty ENDED 7/2013!

2. Tom Kenny their service guy gets me covered under warranty w/ SOA! No Charge.

3. I'm very pleased. Tom says he'll try to do so with other '05 owners on the LGT Board. Contact tkenny at berman.com
