In Australia a company called Jaycar sell a kit that you install into anycar and when you lift your foot off the gas quickly then it will light up the brake light. It was a neat little unit.

But, on top of that LEDs arer safer as well due to the fact that they reach peak illumination quicker then a standard incadescent globe

Sorry for off topic just having a little preach about the pleasures of LEDs

i think you would only really notice it with the reverse light. can't really tell through the red lens.

that said, i brought up the idea on their forum about keeping the reverse light as it is, no need for that to be LEDs, but no one cared.

^^ I disagree. At night ok, but in the daytime you can see the breadboard easily. I really am not impressed.

How do you see the breadboard thru the red plastic? What would be good is to clear the tail light as well as the newer RX330s have clear plastic.

I love the new FX clear tailights, http://www.infiniti.com/m/cma/i/veh/veh_gal_fx45_wall_14.jpg. It'd be cool if we can get clear housings for our cars. But what really makes the FX headlights and tailights nice is its bulbous shape.

Look inside the taillight. I can plainly see it easily.

yes, if you take a close-up picture of the taillight and you are looking out for the board, you can see it (note that i've already conceded the reverse light is pretty visible). but through the red, it really is not too obvious by any means, especially when driving behind this car.

Just to let you guys know, I have a new idea. You might see something in the next few weeks.

but hey, obviously it's better not to have it visible, or to lean more towards stricter standards when you're trying to come up with something for the legacy's retrofit, so go ahead, make it look even better!

i understand that it would look better if not visible, i just still think they did a really good job.

How are you going to take them apart? They seem to be sealed with some sort of superglue.

Also guys, make sure you bubblewrap the crap out of them.. the tails are very delicate and corners and sides wil chip and break if not packed properly.

I think it looks bad and shows a lack of attention to detail. I would never send a retrofit out looking like that. I have turned down people because I want every retro to be of the highest quality and something that I would want on my car. If I felt that could not be achieved, then I will turn them down. I could easily stick a breadboard into the Legacy tails and call it a day but it would look horrible.

EDIT: They are plastic sealed so it is impossible to open them up without cutting them open. Honda doesn't plastic seal, they use a butyl rubber that when heated is plyable. Unfortunately, Subaru and most American manufacturers do not use butyl rubber.

Little update.. I had an extra cluster from another project lying around so I decided to try it since it is just a rectangle matrix.

This is a good example of how the lens is not completely clear. The lines that run across it refract the light differently.

This photo is allowing less light in the lens so you can see the individual LEDs. You can see how positioning them is a problem. Maybe line the circuit board up with the lines so where the lines are it skips a row

Anyways.. these LEDs are not even red, they are amber and not as bright as what I usually use. This was just an example of what I am talking about.

^^ I am considering using fewer LEDs that are actually much more powerful. So the brake function would be more along the lines of 5 extremely high intensity LEDs attached to a copper heatsink

yeah people tend to prefer larger LEDs, and will sacrifice #s for it. kinda like the g35 sedan at some point, the circles were composed of like 9 big LEDs.
