hey guys,

i know dmiller is looking into making these for us and that's great.

but i just thought i would post this update on the acurazine page. mike from lmretrofits apologized for his company taking so much time, being understaffed, and not communicating well, etc. so for those of you who contacted the company, that explains their poor response.

but, there are some pictures of his uncompleted work with the tsx tails, and i know the legacy's won't be circles, but it's still cool to see.

Does that mike guy come here at all? Because I was wondering if he was going to make a try of shroud so that you would not be able to see the exposed circuit board. That was the only thing that I thought his retro needed.

Well guys I received it today and starting examining it. It will not come apart through a heat process as it is plastic welded together. So dremeling is required to modify the light. I am going to modify this one, just because I have it, but I don't think that most of you will like the finished result.

The circled part is the plastic weld that extends along the whole taillight to seal it

Well I made up a small design, but again, I don't think it is what a lot of you had in mind. And I don't think what you guys have in mind is even possible without extreme customizing. But if you just want the safety and look of LED, then I have a viable solution....

dmiller, That looks o... k... Are special LED bulbs used to make them iluminate dual staged like that?

Is it not possible to mate a flat circut board in there and make rows of lights instead? IMO that would look the best.

Yea no I thought about that. It isn't an LED bulb, that's a circuit board that I built really quickly. My main concern is that if I do make a long board than it will be really easy to see through the lens. I have this positioned where it isn't really visible unless you look for it. Unfortunately with the clear lens on the B4 it makes looking into the housing very easy. Soo.. yea comments welcome .. good or bad. The more the better

Another problem:

It is also hard to cut away a good portion as the rear of the housing has those positioning/securing screws that hold them to the cars body. Therefore when cutting I must cut around them and make sure they are still secure.

spray on chrome from my experience.. is CRAP! heh sorry to hear that its plastic welded, I guess the only reason the headlights arent is because of the projector assembly inside.

any possibility of using some sort of highly polished thin metal as your LED overlay? it will conduct, so thats not so hot, but it would giev you the high gloss, it seems at this point the only way to get LEDs is to re-engineer the whole taillight. which would be kinda costly. OH.. how about.. (I'm no retrofitter so lemme know if I'm spouting BS) if you drill holes in the existing backing, and do some sort of flexible overlay where the LEDs protrude into the stock housing, so basically you have tons of holes drilled in the chrome housing, but its still intact, and just fill in the stock bulb hole with a shiny plug of some kind with its own LEDs in it? just speculating, I hope I got my idea across there.

you work with hidplanet? I've contacted them many times on prospects, great stuff there, I just haven't done anything cos.. well, its kinda pricey and not really cost effective on older rides.

is there some reason what I said wont work? btw if you still think theres any chance of getting it to work I'm sure some of us can donate to your endeavors.

Oh and I was not referring to you Darkfox.. (no hard feelings)

Darkfox, if you refer to the picture I posted on the first page, there is a problem with the screw location on the taillight. I have to keep those and must drill around them so the taillight can still be secured properly to the body. Also, the LEDs I use are not standard 5mm that you usually see. These are high power LEDs that all OEMs use with a nonstandard base. So drilling holes is not a good solution. We will see, I will play around with them for the next few days...

Nice work dmiller! Def glad you have the time & skills to play around with the tail light. I like the idea, and the LEDs you showed are impressive, but for these tail lights, I think it will have to be parallel rows of LEDs for it to look good. I understand that's not going to be straightforward with this configuration; I guess that's the challenge...
