thats a shadow box/flag box. A chief's box is something you carry through induction. You put a book in it and get everyone on your "ship" to sign it, and your shipmates will only sign it after the you tell them their job.

Here is my coin rack and the one I made. Mine is the one with the coins:

got it, I never got in to the whole challenge coin thing, I see where the senior enlisted and officers like it however I just never got in to it, although i've only been in >1 year just hasnt been my thing to collect. A master guns retired recently in my unit and they showed everyone his shadow box before they presented it to him, it was real nice.

I love collecting coins, they usually represent an achievement of some sort. They also show where you've been, etc. I've got about 25 coins during my 5 1/2yrs in, 3/4 of them were given to me. Best one I have is from a one star after fixing the ECM pod on his jet while in SWA. The coolest one I have though is from my EW tech school, unfortunately it was banned for not being MEO "safe". Still have it though, carry it with me everywhere! I do need to pick up a coin rack sometime though, I feel bad for keeping all those coins in a box.

i can see other service members motives for collecting them, similar to button or sticker collecting like I do with snowboarding and surfing I have some sort of sticker/decal on my roof rack from the places i've been. I've only been to MCRD Parris Island, Camp Lejeune, Ft. Lee, VA back to Camp Lejeune and 29 palms nothing worth bragging about as of lately

its not always where youve been, but what youve done. We worked for about 7 months 12 hour days 6-7 days a week prepping for an inspection, and I was coined for "superior performance" during the inspection. It was nice to be recognized for the work that I put into my program.

RZA you went to fort lee? 1391?? Are you at 8th ESB?

I received a Kabar plaque when I PCS'd from MWSS-171 Iwakuni. I didn't get anything when I get out at MWSS-272, but that unit is full of shit bags.

I also have about 10 coins, didn't buy any, was always given for deployments or other things. Got one from SgtMaj of the Marine Corps too.

Nope not QM side Ordnance Side, they moved the School of Ordnance down from Aberdeen to Ft. Lee last year, the Ordnance school is on the other side of the highway with a bridge connecting it over by the big PX and Rigger School. I'm 2111 Armorer 3rd Battalion 6th Marines Camp Lejeune, NC.

As for coins:

do you ever brief higher ranking officers? thats another way. They will come with time. If its not a priority don't worry about it. Since I left japan, I haven't gotten too many.

Being stationed in Japan, you get to deploy ALOT and get plenty of coins. And thats cool they changed the school to Fort Lee, thats an alright base. I was a 1391 Bulk Fuel Specialist when I was in. Went to school with riggers, food service, and morticians. I'm sorry to hear your in Jville, that place has to be the worst place to be stationed. I'd rather 29 palms over Jacksonville. worst two years of my life.

i haven't briefed a higher ranking officer/NCO/SNCO yet, come deployment maybe I will, until then I just remain a lowly Lance Corporal along with the 100k+ lcpl's in the marine corps, as of now my only asset to them is when we get back from being in the field and I get them in and out of the Armory at a decent hour

I did a cycle of Mojave Viper @ 29 Palms, i'm glad im not stationed there, I wanted Pendleton and ended up at Lejeune. It isnt too bad only 8 hours from home i've gone home a few times since i've been here, where new river and camp geiger is there really isnt much over there alot more on mainside of Lejeune, but it is annoying to go to places around town and seeing nothing but marines wherever you go.

haha yeah I know what what you mean. New River has nothing on it, just all flight line. It always made me laugh watching some gunny having a bad day chewing out some boots at walmart. Was almost a daily occurrence when ever I stopping in to shop. That and the bars aren't much to brag about either.

You should look into Iwakuni. Oki is like LA but with more asians lol. Iwakuni is on the main land and you can actually get away from the military. Hell, you go 15 mins down the road and there are people who have never met an american let alone military. Iwakuni is shared with Japanese navy though, pretty nice base I must say. Best base I've been to yet. It's small but has A LOT of perks.

oh yeah and the armory there is tiny, makes your job way easier.

I got one from the Multinational Corps CSM because I was manning a watchtower well one night. Like that's hard- maybe he expected the National Guard guys to be sleeping. He was down with the BDE CSM and they were touring our base with Top and SMAJ.

This was about a week after I had pissed off everyone from Multinational Corps down to my LT with a letter in Stars & Stripes. When they got back down to the truck, Top said "That's that guy we were talking about!" Corps CSM looked him up and down with a glare and said "First Sergeant, you're an asshole." Then he got in the humvee and BDE CSM punched it. Top and BN SMAJ walked home.

I treasure that coin.
