I'll try; Interested myself. If security approaches I may try "I am with Tony" thing. I will try to look underneath to at least see the turbo plumbing etc.

May be, I am willing to try. I want to check if the exhaust is similar to BP/BL GT. Our 2010 came with no undercover so who knows, these are show cars.

I am not confident they will allow anyone to open the hood, but I will try.

I am sure it will be similar, since the 2015+ wrx/sti exhaust pretty much bolts into the 5th gen, as does the 08-14 wrx/sti and the 4th gen is near enough it would be a slightly modded bolt in affair.

I would expect to have to extend the system and possibly turn down the tips or route them slightly down and then out.

Here is a link to a shared album with my photos from the show. I will also put some of them here.

I took pics under the hood. Appears to be a front mounted turbo, TMIC (giant). Oil filter is on top which is good. One interesting change is that electronics are moved to engine bay - ECU and couple of other modules are under the hood now.

Car looks good both in and out. Interior looks way better than all of competition we looked at - VW Atlas, CX-9, Volvo XC-90. Atlas was especially disappointing after Ascent. CX-9 and XC-90 come close but CX-9 felt few years behind in design, and XC-90 was a little bit busy.

Ascent that was at the show was Limited trim. 3rd row is more comfortable and easier to get to than Tribeca B-9 we drove to the show. There is also plenty of room at 2nd row, 2nd row moves similar to how it does on Tribeca. Front seats can move back so far I wasn't able to reach the pedals even with tips of my boots. I am 5'6. There was a real tall guy who sat in driver's seat after me, he was approx 6'3 and he looked real happy. Plenty of leg room. Same or larger amount of storage behind 3rd row compared to Tribeca.

3rd row has dedicated small speakers. 2nd row has its own climate controls. Vents for 2nd row moved to the sides roof.

Interior panels and dash are all soft touch and look good visually, and are pleasant to touch. I did like the interior a lot. Felt comfortable. Leatherate on seats felt good, you won't mistake it for leather but at the same time it didn't feel like cheap one in Atlas.

Rear doors got sunshades. That was really nice. As for 19 cup holders, I think it comes from you count them - rear doors have storage pockets that are divided in 3 - so 19 may be just the magic of numbers.

Power rear gate - shocks are the motors and it looks like the mechanism can be retro-fitted into older designs like Tribeca or BP body. Will be interesting to measure and see if it works.

I did take a pic from underneath. FLegacy was right about the front - nothing but the undertray. Rear was interesting - rear diff has cooling ribs so may be heat management is something Subaru had to take care of with Ascent.

Gas tank cover now opens like it used to about 15 years back - press on it to open. Do not search for handle in the cabin ;)

We did like Ascent a lot. It had a lot of people and was definetily attracting interest. We'll wait a year to let them sort little things out and will be looking to get one in 2020 MY or so. Really want to see what captain's seat looks like.

Probably the only thing I didn't like were the small rubber plugs for AUX-IN and USB ports on front audio. They felt out of place, didn't look good and are likely to be ripped off quickly. Surprised Subaru decided to that while providing really easy spring-loaded cover for 2-nd row USB ports.

I think SOA will sell them as fast as they will be able to build them. For the price they are asking Ascent beats any competition easily. Kudos to Subaru for this one. Well done.

Couple or things sales guy said:

2.4 DIT is the only engine option for Ascent. No bigger engine is in the works.

2.4DIT is capable of hitting 400hp "easily".

All power numbers for Ascent are rated at regular 87 octane.

Pricing should be announced this Thursday.

Non-Ascent related things:

Nothing on 2019 Legacy.

Outback in Touring trim is great.

Hatch should be back for WRX/STI in 2020.

Seems decent.

But the spare wheel exposed under the car sucks the day you'd need it.

True.

At the same time, haven't had to pull ours out even once over 10 years of ownership (knocking on wood).

Mega thanks! Much appreciated.

Not surprising. They benchmarked the heck out of the competition to ensure that this was a grand slam out of the gate. Subaru clearly wants to be at the big-boy table and take a substantial chunk out of the Mid-SUV market.

We had looked at a fully-boat CX-9 to get a feel for the segment, considering that it was routinely touted as the best of class interior. Not surprising about the Atlas, it's VW's attempt to rush something to market, which Subaru was not willing to do with this, given how anemic the demand was for the Tribeca.

They had better be ready for the refresh model in 2-3 years, because current mfgr's are watching and I'd bet a dime to a donut, that Ascent will be the benchmark to beat. Unfortunately, no one can pull off Subaru's AWD at this price point, so interior and intelligent human interface will be the areas that Subaru will have to capitalize on to stay ahead of the pack.

I am surprised that they didn't have a tow hitch on the show model, given that this is a significant step-up in tow-capability for Subaru and market buyers look for this.

If that 400hp figure is a not lie, then that is probably hinting at what the sti will do with that engine on 93 with perhaps some different heads, turbo and a manual trans.

I believe so too. By 2020 all the competition for STI will move up as well and Subaru will have to knock them out, not just playalong with STI competitors. That said however remember this was said unofficially so who knows.

I was equally excited to hear about hatch coming back in 2020, but again, anything goes on rumors mill.

I think that's the first time I've seen an oil cooler on an FA or FB type engine. Not sure what the engine code will be, "FC" perhaps, but looks like an engine cooler is just one element of the increased duty elements added to the Ascent. I wonder if there's also an additional trans cooler added to the mix? Know that there's a Subaru cooler already for the HD-CVT, just don't recall it being installed previously on anything USDM.

I never had an issue when I've had to use a spare that was under the rear.

To me it's actually better, I've seen those people loaded up on a road trip- all their stuff on the side of the road because they had to unload everything to get to the spare- no thanks.
