Steering squirrely at 50 mph and above

Recommended Posts

Wind pushes car.

I counter steer.

Wind stops pushing car.

My counter steer over corrects.

...

Result, car wanders all over road.

Small world. My BMW motorcycles used to do the same thing. Must be the boxer engine. :)

Of course wind will push a car, especially a tall mid sized vehicle.

I'm referring to normal calm weather on a daily work drive where the highway traffic on the GSP here is 65-80mph. My co-worker was cool enough to let me test out his 17' STI wheels that had Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. The vehicle stayed straight in the lanes and I didn't have to correct the car unless I did hit a bump. It was a big difference and actually quieter.

I went to my co-workers tuning/installs shop for an alignment and balancing although they said that I didn't NEED either one done. They did perform the balancing and that's when I mentioned sway bars. They said sway bars are more for auto cross and cornering, not just for highway driving. They recommended that I not waste any more money on sway bars and instead purchase my own set of good tires.

As far as the dealerships is concerned, SOA recommended that I go to a Stella Care award center and that's what I did. They found that the previous dealer did not properly tighten all bolts on the new steering parts. This not only created an annoying rattle but resulted in the loose steering. Both are fixed now!

unbeliveable. Which dealership was that? That's a safety risk but glad it all worked out and the car is back to working order.

Open Road Subaru of Union did the part replacement and Paul Miller Subaru found the problem and fixed it.

I took the car to two other dealers in Jersey City and Bloomfield and they couldn't find the rattling noise and looseness. I emailed SOA told me to go to Paul Miller where they were great.

Mind you Open Road left this part last summer in my car. d0c298764a3107aa48086bf304f25508.jpg

Exactly!! Sheesh!!

Just as my dad used to say "Can't pay anyone to do anything these days."

They probably connected to the OBD reader and didn't find any fault codes so the car must be OK.

I had horrible sway on the highway. It all stopped when I installed the 20mm rear sway bar. I would recommend the upgrade for anyone. You could even review my posts about the issue. I was ready to give up on the car completely over the swaying. Even after multiple alignments, the only relief I got was by upgrading.

I ended up getting SOA involved. "Subaru of America". The rear diff ended up being bad. Took 3 months to get replaced. They re manufactured the part in Japan. They also replaced front rotors and pads and 2 tires. Drives like it should now.

I got my alignment fixed the other day and the Legacy is still tramlining on rutted interstates, which here in Missouri is all of them. The rear only tramlines or dog-tracks to the the right when in the ruts. The front stays straight. My question is if my rear cross camber is at 0.7. I know the max allowable spec of rear cross camber 0.75 for our cars. Is 0.7 a big enough difference to cause my problem? How can I get my dealer to fix it?

Coming from a 13 Regal and a 17 Terrain that both had low-profile tires, I've never had a vehicle with a rear end this squirrelly before on these same roads.

I attached the alignment pages. My car only has 1200 miles on it.

How would they do it if "its not adjustable?" Is it because you think LR needs more negative camber? Is the center of the acceptable range -1.5?

Everything is possible to adjust, sometimes it requires replacing parts.

But if it's designed to not be adjustable and the vehicle has bad values it could of course be caused either by a damaged part like hitting a curb to bad or bad assembly of the vehicle.

Ok, true. I'm the only driver and I'm always careful of bad spots in roads and I know I haven't hit a curb so it was bad assembly unfortunately.

Start with taking it to a real suspension specialist for correct diagnosis and possible adjustment. But considering that your car is pretty new it would be a warranty issue.

If the error was symmetric it wouldn't be a driveability issue, but since the error is asymmetric you suffer from issues that in the long run will make you more tired when driving and that's not good.

I agree with you. I hope they can fix it or another Subaru dealer can because I don't like the idea nor should I have to fix something that wasn't built right.

I totally agree. I'm a semi truck driver and yeah its always more stressful when the trailer off-tracks because the tandems are out of alignment. My car shouldn't be harder to keep inside the lines compared to a semi, LOL.

I'm having issues where the rear end only sways to the right. It will even start off-tracking as soon as I slightly turn the steering wheel to the left (literally from 12 o'clock to like 11:55). I can turn it that much or more to the right and it doesn't do it ever. It happens at all speeds from 10mph and up and on just about every road.

They did fix my alignment again by shifting the subframe. Everything is the same except -1.2 LR camber and -1.5RR camber. So it got better from the -1.0LR and -1.7RR. They got the difference down to more than half as much as it was. The rear end swing is still just as bad as it was before.

I'm having issues again. The car especially when cold feels like a old shopping cart. Something that compounds the dead on center steering is the steering dampener bushing. I had installed the lockout adapter and it tightened the steering up, but then caused a horrible front end noise going over bumps. I removed the lockout and I can't believe I drove the car as long as I did before. It's like driving on sand with no feeling at all on center and or control. Simply put with no input from me not moving the wheel.. The car will go either left or right and at varying rates dependent on NOTHING. WHICH THEN by correcting it I would have swayed back and forth. it's a horrible feeling because the more you try to be on top of it the more it feels like a pin-ball machine. I usually end up getting off the highway because my nerves are a wreck!

And you have checked all wheel alignments, both front and rear at a shop that's specialized in it and not the dealer?

Also consider if it's the tires you have that's the culprit. I had to go 10 to 15% up on air pressure to get good behavior on one of the 5th gens I had.

Have you had Subaru look at it? There was a recall on some steering parts.
