Not all of us are old enough to remember WW2, gramps ;)

How about the Korean war. We were still flying Mustangs up against MIG-15 jets. And the F-82 Twin Mustang while we're on a double barrel sort of topic.

How about the Vietnam-era F-4 Phantom II "Double Ugly"?

hurr durr just had my wisdom teeth taken out...

I have never understood why so many considered the F-4 Phantom ugly or called it a flying brick. I've always loved the look of that plane. So damn malevolent looking.

Same here, I thought this was one of the coolest looking planes during it's time period. The military channel put out a really nice documentry on it's mission during the Vietnam war.

My wife's balls are delicious.

I've been obsessed with the F-4 since I was a kid. I always taught it had a really menacing look about it. I read an article about some lucky rich dudes owning decommissioned ones as private flyers. That would be bad ass!

I'm just a big fan of military planes, each are unique in their own way.

Totally, function can be a beautiful thing. I love the A-10 for what it is: A tank with wings for close encounters. I get to see them fly by when I'm at work some times. The 127th Wing, MI ANG flies the East Coast of the Thumb area since we border Canada.

Who members when the Blue Angels flew phantoms?

I "remember" all of their air shows in the intervening years first with the A4F Phantom, then the A4 Skyhawk, then the F/A18 Hornet A/B and most recently the F/A Hornet C/D. And the Fat Albert C-130 has been their support aircraft during that duration.

FWIW - I think the RA-5C Vigilante and the F14 Tomcat were some of the most lethal and elegant of their generation. On a race back to the carrier, the Vigi would absolutely scald the Phantom - and they were essentially, on-paper, equal.

But my first love is the F14 Tomcat. Lethality personified

Like the F4, it was expensive to operate, and the M.I.C. found a way to convince Congress and the Navy that they needed a dual-purpose F/A aircraft to replace both the A6 and the F14. Introduce the F/A-18, which excelled at neither and didn't have the legs to get out and back without a whole host of Texaco's along the way. Cost-benefit = neutral (at best).

I followed the F-18 procurement back in the day. I remember it came in real short on range compared not just to the A-6, but the A-7, too. I also think the fall of the Soviet Union had a lot to do with the demise of the F-14. No Backfire cruise missile threat, no need for an interceptor aircraft with standoff capabilities to protect the fleet. I wonder if they are rethinking that with rise of the Chinese threat. I don't know if the ballistic carrier killer will work but Chinese SUs with air to ship missiles will be a heckuva threat.
