As a kid I had trouble with math and the accepted 80's/90's public school methods used to teach it. Instead I thought in base tens to make the numbers manageable. Never got full credit on the tests because I didn't show my work (always had a C-level average but scored 740/800 on math SAT). It's interesting to see that the kids these days are learning alternate methods for math, because not everybody thinks the same way.

Funny I was just having this discussion yesterday. I was telling my friend that I just taught myself to use round numbers and then a remainder. So, say, 567+234 would be 500+200+60+30+11. Much easier for me that way.
