BRZ STi - So it begins...

Recommended Posts

I think it's very difficult for those of us addicted to the torque of turbo 4's to give it up.

It's easier than it seems. Once you have both cars and you get into your legacy - all you can feel is slop/floaty handling and a lot of input lag. Torque is the only nice thing performance-wise and it's fairly easy to give up when you get a lot in return.

Holy crap, it fits...

30R? You mean EFR?
I think the initial quote should have read 3.0R (red one has a 3.0 badge and a shoehorned EZ30 in the bay). Later there is a EFR Borg Warner kit on the amuse car.

Except for the angled rods being bad for a boosted engine. I'd rather have the 3.0 di turbo than a 3.6 running low boost.

*I missed the destroking part of that comment.

If boosting it - then I assume a complete reconstruction with serious rods so it can take a decent amount of rpm making "Red zone" the happy zone or something! :)

I notice the same thing when switching between my E36 M and my LGT. The LGT feels like a barge compared to the M. The difference is the M has great responsiveness and torque at tip in. I don't think I could live with a BRZ day to day. It just feels like its dragging an anchor.

Yup. I'd say the same thing between my 05LGT and my 06S2K. That and I often hit the rev limiter expecting a few more RPMs.

The main issue is the weight dist with the LGT. In order to get decent handling, you have to give up some in comfort and noise/vibration. I've spent quite a bit on my LGT and for the investment it is quite loud between the exhaust, trans mount and suspension. My tires are loud too. It's fun, and fast enough for me, but getting into the boxster is always a pleasure.

When I had the miata I was always tickled when a good hook up at a redlight would let me surprise someone in the next lane. With the LGT, I don't want to attract attention in town, so more often than not a truck or auto car will get a roll on me easy enough. I don't have that issue with the boxster. It may not feel fast but it is quick, and a bunch of fun..

All I need now is a hill holder and a center passing light...

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/08/21/toyota-86-most-likely-to-get-more-power-through-more-displacemen/

"The Sydney Morning Herald has spoken to Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of the Toyota 86 (our version of it, the Scion FR-S, is pictured above), and they've been promised that more power is on the way. We've heard a lot of speculation about a more powerful Toyobaru since before the standard model was even launched. The only question now is how the power will be delivered, and among the engine concepts we've already heard about – turbo, supercharger, twin-charged, hybrid – is a new one: more displacement.

Tada said that an engine with more displacement than the current coupe's 2.0 liters is being tested alongside a turbocharged and a hybrid-assisted motor. The SMH cites "inside sources" as saying the displacement option is the one likely to get the go-ahead, and suggests increased bore and stroke will see the engine grow to 2.5 liters, horsepower to about 250 – a 50-hp increase over the present car."

I'm surprised they are looking at 2.5, I was actually expecting a 2.2 version. Hopefully they have learned their lessons on the EJ series concerning head gaskets when increasing bore and designed the block for a 2.5 from the get go. I'd like to see them bring the torque up in line with the other NA subaru engines.

Well if no turbo is to be had, then I want a cheaper version of the kind of insanity Porsche offers with the GT3. Think a bit more displacement, titanium connecting rods, forged pistons, upgraded valves and springs, hotter cam. Put some heads on that can breath worth a shit too. Give us a $40K GT3 with a 9,000 RPM redline and 300hp or so. Make it sound like an angry rumbly boxer at idle, and a wailing chainsaw race car at full snort. Do it Subaru, stop being pussies.

Officially the STi that Jalopnik and others are ranting about is "currently" being called the BRZ Ts Concept (STi) in Japan...

My favorite comment on Jalopnik regarding the Ts:

Subaru - "Oh. You wanted a turbo? Tough shit."

A hardtop version of a Seven, with a Hartley V8 is damn near the top of my "omfg do want" list.

I wonder if you could take this:

http://www.hawkcars.co.uk/hf3000/index.html

And put in engine/transmission from a decently powered FWD car.

E.g.:

  • Volvo B5254T2-R.
  • Volvo B8444S.
  • Honda J35A8.
  • Honda K23A1.
  • GM LP9 Turbo.
  • Etc...

I didn't know about these Hawk kits. Lancia Stratos

http://bringatrailer.com/2011/09/20/bat-exclusive-1997-hawk-hf3000-lancia-stratos-kit/

"the Alfa 164LS engine is a good modern replacement for the original 246 Dino engine. Other engines can be installed, although this kit has mounts intended for the Alfa V6. There have been Honda and Nissan V6′s, Honda 4′s, Ferrari 308/328 and 246 engines installed in other Hawks."

Wonder if an LSx would fit?
