    Too close to home?
  2. 2015s got the upgraded color camera and wider field of view which adds impressive capability to an already decent Eyesight system. Reading. In the 2020 Legacy thread that the newest JDM version can recognize turn signals and can operate in near-autonomous mode in city environs. We're taking a 400 mile round trip next weekend - all highway. Will report back on mileage.
  3. A redneck with a bucket full of live fish, was approached recently by a game warden in Arkansas as he started to drive his boat away from a lake. The game warden asked the man, "May I see your fishing license please?" "Naw, sir," replied the redneck. "I don't need none of them there papers. These here are my pet fish." "Pet fish!?!?" "Yep. Once a week, I bring these here fish o'mine down to the lake and let 'em swim 'round for a while. Then when I whistle, they swim right back into my net and I take 'em home." "What a line of baloney....you're under arrest." The redneck said, "It's the truth, Mr. Gov'ment man. I'll show ya! We do this all the time!!" "WE do, now, do WE?" smirked the warden. "PROVE it!" The redneck released the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After a few minutes, the warden said, "Well?" "Well, WHUT?" said the redneck. The warden asked, "When are you going to call em back?" "Call who back?" "The FISH," replied the warden! "Whut fish?" asked the redneck. Truth: We may not be as smart as some city slickers, but we ain't as dumb as some government employees.
  4. The 45mph section is about 2 miles long, with a lot of hills/elevation changes in that stretch. It's down hill through a good portion of it, like into a river valley, and you have to keep your foot on the gas going downhill, because the 5EAT brakes if you're off the gas and coasting. The the uphill portion is significant and even higher elevation with several turns. You can feel, and hear, the engine and drivetrain working to pull that grade. From that point onward, it's all 25-30mph stop and go redlights and stop signs, again, uphill and down in the city. Nothing is flat or level around here for the most part. 2013 Legacys and Outbacks could be ordered with EYESIGHT. For 2014 it could be ordered or, as in this case, it came as part of the Special Equipment Package. It works well, and with the 3-mode distance-following will start to slow you down in cruise ON mode, and slow you down even further relative to the car's speed ahead, then continue to slow down and bring you to a complete halt if that vehicle ahead stops. I was rolling up to the garage door, and was about 5' away, when I noticed that the OB was slowing. I kept my foot hovered over the brake pedal, and when it got about 1' away, it completely stopped the car. I really like the Tribeca, especially the 08+ with the 3.6L and revised 5EAT that the 08+ Legacy chassis received. That said, it's a brick, weighs 4,200+ lbs empty, and has wind resistance coefficient of a garage door. It's thirsty huffing all of that weight around, and pushing that much air, and it only has a 16.9gal tank, so you fill up a lot - range around town is ~270 miles. Our daughter and her family had one. They averaged about 18mpg overall, and would see lower 20s on the highway fully loaded. They loved it, and would likely still have it, but a 3/4T Chevy pickup hit them from the rear at 55+ MPH closing speed, and that was the end of the Tribeca. It was a 2012, full-boat limited, so it had all the bells and whistles. Our SIL was driving and drove it home, but when they had it appraised, the entire rear sub-frame was broken on one side and twisted on the other. He was uninjured. Brilliant 2nd seating operation, very similar to the Ascent, but the 3rd row, infants and very small people only. YMMV. Really liking this OB. Looking forward to hooking up the "Egg" trailer and going camping.
  5. Don't go with the Gates Kevlar "Blue" version. Too many instances of that blue-ish transferring to the roller and tensioner bits
  6. Did some elevation checks today, and it's more 750-1000' elevation changes. It's significant enough that the car will shift out of overdrive to keep the same speed. Filled up this evening 87 Non-ETH. 26.3MPG indicated, the maths (426.5miles / 16.34gals = 26.1MPG. That puts the range at over 490 miles until empty, all else equal. I'm more than satisfied with that. Right after fillup, found some flat-stretch with slight rolling bits that's a 55mph zone for a couple of miles. Reset the MPG and was clicking along at 29.3MPG at 60mph. The one recent freeway MPG check, right after we changed from 93 ETH to 87 Non-ETH, was on a long trip stretch of large rolling hills freeway and it was averaging nearly 29mpg at 75MPH on cruise. I could likely do better without cruise, but I always use cruise on the highway, so that's a good real world check for me. Oh, and EYESIGHT will keep you from accidentally running into your garage door... bonus!
  7. It's all 45MPH and under, stop and go with brief periods of rural hills but steady state 45MPH up and down 500-750 foot elevation changes. Will fill up tomorrow, and report back Another thing I checked out is if you're in Sport mode, and shift, with the paddles to1st at a stop, it will lock the front and rear together 50/50, same with 2nd at a stop, just like the 4EATs, it will lock the front and rear together and start out in 2nd. Starting in 2nd reduces the 3.6's heavy torque and makes it easier to get going in less than ideal road conditions. In either 1st or 2nd in Sport Mode, the logic holds the trans in that gear to near or at redline. Snow predicted tonight. Will see how that turns out.
  8. Doctors were told to contribute to the construction of a new hospital wing at the hospital. What was their reaction? The allergists voted to scratch it. The dermatologists preferred no rash moves. The gastroenterologists had a gut feeling about it. The neurologists thought the administration had a lot of nerve. The obstetricians stated they were laboring under a misconception. The ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted. The orthopedists issued a joint resolution. The pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" The pediatricians said, "Grow up." The proctologists said, "We are in arrears." The psychiatrists thought it was madness. The surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing. The radiologists could see right through it. The internists thought it was a hard pill to swallow. The plastic surgeons said, "This puts a whole new face on the matter." The podiatrists thought it was a big step forward. The urologists felt the scheme wouldn't hold water. The cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.
  9. Now averaging 26.1 around town on 87 non-ethanol gas. She's reset her timing and stabilized from the 93. Seems pretty happy on the 87 NETH
  10. I am always on the lookout for a fully-loaded 96-97 SVX LSi with low miles. Would pay a premium for it. Almost had one with 16k on it, but was outbid by an overseas bidder at the last second.
  11. Just close your eyes, trust and fall! They will catch you! What could go wrong
  12. Interesting chicken"tractor" design
  13. One way or another to bring those hulks to a stop...
  14. boxkita, per your request, I've added Xenonk's original post to the first post of this thread.
  15. MRT of Subaru CVT Secrets Interesting that the mech mentions two sizes, large and small. Presume that's the difference between CVT and HDCVT? Tech also mentions 400Nm torque as the design limit for this particular CVT which equals ~ 295 ft/lb torque rating. Steel "Push Belt" Type vs Steel "Pull Chain" Type CVT listing Everything I've read of one vs the other is that the Pull Chain type is quieter and more durable, and doesn't rubberband/slingshot like the Push Belt type. Anyone who's driven a NISSAN CVT knows this latter "rubberband" behavior. Personally why I like and appreciate Subaru's Lineartronic on-demand response - much more linear IME. Also why I never liked Subaru's (Dihatsu?) Push Belt type CVT in their Justy. As a people and cargo mover, the Ascent w/CVT is looking more palatable all the time.
  16. So far, not much difference. Doesn't seem to pull as strongly on uphill merge ramos, but it's still learning the 87 values.
  17. Sounds like more fuel delivery than spark, and the ECU is doing everything it can to mitigate the issue. I'd check your FP pump and dampner.
  18. On 18x8.5", once you get past +45ish offset, depending on the tire section width, you're looking at potential fender rub, especially if you lower the car without adding rear toe and camber control. Stock Legacy is 17x7 +55 215/45x17 and the Spec B is 18x7 +55 and tire size is 215/45x18. A 225/35x18 may fit but that's a small section width for 8.5" or even 9.5" wheels, but, if you lower, without camber control, then you may very well end up with rubbing on the inside above the rear shock mount. As jrho pointed out, you'll likely need a fender roll. Definitely if you go wider tire size. Good luck.
  19. Recent tank calc'd out to 23.7MPG - still on 93. Just switched to non-ethanol 87 to see if that makes any difference.
  20. AIR 08+ were physically different to accommodate the air injection system. That also meant some changes/differences in the mounting points between the two.
