WOW, amazing progress. I'm impressed.

Glad you didn't waste time painting the block, it's not like you can see it any ways.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

very nice work! I have my engine out on a stand right now waiting for my long block from Phoenix Performance. When I took off the manifold I separated it from the TGVs...what a waste of time that was!

What method are you going to use to prime the engine with oil prior to starting running it?

Pulled the fuel pump fuse and just cranked it for a while.

Car is alive and don't let anyone tell you that forged piston clearance doesn't sound like a diesel when it's cold because damn it definitely does.

Everything seems to be ok right now, only questioning the coolant return hose from the turbo may be leaking from a loose oem clamp.

I am planning on taking it for a ride tonight then bringing it to work tomorrow but we'll see if I can get that line to seal.

I also got a loose oem clamp but on the oil outlet hose. Luckily I caught that before the engine was back in the car.

Pulled the plug going to seal it tomorrow after its done dripping coolant.

I have to say the forged pistons are a bit annoying but oh well, if it means I won't ever have one seize up in the bore when I'm beating the piss out of it I'm fine with it.

That's what I was figuring... Plus I think I'm a bit extra in tune with everything since I recently had a failure... so my comfort level with any noise from that car is gone right now.

Also have a coasting growl in 4th and 5th mostly... I think its something in my exhaust touching somewhere since there is no noise when your on the throttle... Only with heavy load deceleration like going down a hill.

Whats the best fitting TB hose out there? AVO or something else? I have a Perrin TMIC for reference. I had issues with mine popping off the end caps before and I'd like to replace it since recently it got coated in oil so I had to tear it all apart and clean it really good before going back together, but I am worrying that I'll pop one of those end caps again because it's not stuck in there as well as it was in the past.

FWIW, I had to send the AVO TB hose back, even with soap I couldn't get it to slip over the TB or the IPR tmic. After having done a boosted honda civic I got fed up with how difficult the AVO was.

May be they sent me the smaller sized one, but when I put the new short block in I jsut boughta new OEM hose. Fits great.

For the decel noise, what FW do you have ? a LWFW will cause more noise along with stiffer mounts.

I have learned to coast down hill in a lot of cases.

Factory 07 single mass flywheel with the Clutchmaster Stage 1 clutch... The clutch disc is was tagged "wrx" and is actually looks exactly the same as my wifes OEM Exedy one for her 04 forester XT (which I know uses a lot of WRX parts) but the clutch material differs between the two. When I mean looks the same the center spring hub has larger springs than my old OEM legacy one had.

and yeah I have a 2nd gear decel noise, or you can hear gear whine and such which I know is from my Group N trans mount and Pitch stop, but the decel noise in 5th is just a bit different... I had it before only at certain times and it would actually go away, which is why I think its some sort of slight rub somewhere. I'm going to try moving my exhaust around a little and clearance the cat a bit more, it's really close to the cross member.

Oh and I don't know if its because I put my factory manifolds back on but the exhaust note just sounds way better, Deeper and nice and smooth, I currently love the sound of it... I'll run it like this for a while and then try my headers again but I may go back to factory manifolds because it just sound sweet... LOL

You're a fellow computer-fixin' guy? Cyber high-five!

I laughed at your smiley faces.

I'll probably need a rebuild soon. At the very least, I'm going to have to pull my driver's side head to extract and tap the #4 spark plug. :spin:

I'm eyeing the street spec short block here: http://www.rallispec.com/prod_block.htm

I don't wish to threadjack, but there's a lot of knowledge in this thread. Does anyone know if the '05 EJ255 heads will work on that shortblock? Would I need to get the heads machined first if they work? ...or can I just clean the heads and bolt 'em on, more or less?

Aluminum head, always have them surface cut at least to make sure they are flat when re-assembling. Especially since all we have is a MLS head gasket. If it was a graphite head gasket then you would have a bit more free play but being MLS they HAVE to be really flat to seal.

As far as the shortblock, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't bolt up. It's a 2.5L block which almost all are the same.

And yeah I'm an IT Administrator for a profession and the car realm is my hobby. I do some side work for some other businesses as well when they need a hand, mostly by word of mouth I get referenced.

I'll also agree with having the head shaved to make sure it's flat, it's just good practise to do that.

And it's either just me ignoring it now or the piston noise is starting to subside already... Not sure really LOL.

160 miles on it so far... Probably going to change the oil at 200 to get the crap out of there and it's my only free time to do the oil change.

Looks like surgery was a success! Quick, not too many complications and breathing is back to normal. Good work doc! cant wait to see her in beast mode again! Must be a great feeling!

Took about a month to do, No real complications with actual assembly... Mostly just with the Machine shop. Granted yes the Block I had problems with going back and forth with him, but in the end the block was still done before the heads so I think even if he didn't f it up the first time I still would have had to wait just as long since he only ordered 4 exhaust valves the first time around, not all 8.

Going to change oil on Sunday and start to give her a little bit more boost and give it another 1k and change the oil again then just let her rip.

And yeah it is a good feeling to have repaired your own vehicle, and to roll into a car show knowing you built what's driving :) but I've been doing that since I had my 95 Beretta. I built a new 3400 engine for that way back in the day and beat the crap out of it, sprayed it with a 100shot of nitrous drove it all over and never had any issues... Still have that car in my driveway with that exact engine in it, and it was still a good motor... but It's been sitting since I got the legacy so it could have some issues now. Good for a spare block for my 96 though if I ever need it.

Changed the oil added in about 3/4 of a quart of Lucas Synthetic Oil stabilizer, and took it for a ride gave it a little boost and no issues. Came home to try and find the woosh woosh sound I was getting around the left front brake and found a crack on the top radiator tank when I was looking everything else over... WTF!!!!!

Looking online Autozone and Advance want's over $260 for a radiator... FBP will get quite a bit lower than that but RA still beats them at $131 to my door for a Spectra/Premium. Same brand Autozone is trying to get $263.99 for. I'm going to try price match first at Autozone and see what they say :)

Napa wants $184 or $219 (depending on which store I pick... WTF!) For the same exact PN CU2778, Probably the same brand but in a Napa box...
