jblackwell1
A little background about the car and myself. Car: I bought the car on 7/9/2011, the motor blew up on the way home from virginia to indiana on 7/10/2011. Needless to say i was pissed, depressed and didnt know what i was gonna do. Couple days passed and i got my head on straight took it to a local dealership with a price quote at $10,200 to replace turbo, shortblock and other stuff. The car is a Red 2005 Legacy GT with 58k miles manual transmission. Me: Im new to subarus and turbos but not to cars. I have a pretty decent background on working on cars and modifying them (suspension, exhaust, audio, brakes, etc) Plan: 350 whp Minor cosmetic mods Coilovers and much more. With thhe help of brum tonite we got the a good chunk of the hard part done, damn tubing is a pita. im hoping to have the motor out sometime this weekend or next week and have it looked at to see what all im going to have to replace or if i just basically have to start new. At the end of this im gona make a picture walkthrough of pulling our engines and putting them back in since i didnt find one in a quick search. Enough talk heres some pictures. Only mods now is autospeed cat back. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0113.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0114.jpg time to get this motor out http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0118.jpg how we left it for tonite. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0131.jpg More to come. MrHellrais3R
Nice, have fun with it! A rebuild definitely won't cost you 10k. Good thing your doing it your self. Should only run you a few grand replacing everything. It can be cheaper replacing all the internals or getting a new shortblock and machining the heads. If your short block needs a lot of work then I'd go new oem short block route for sure. Just check to make sure the bore's are still with in spec. What exactly happened to the motor? Cracked ring? Spun bearing?
jblackwell1
As far as what happened to the motor im not sure, it looks like it jumped timing but i wont know exactly what all is wrong until i get it apart. Im hoping to be at 350 whp with supporting mods at around 5-6k
GEE-OTTO
Was this a private party buy or a Dealership? That really sucks ass and im sure who ever sold it to you knew that was an issue Anyway you can get this thing rebuilt for well under $10K if you do most of the work yourself well under $4K You can get a assembled new short block for very good prices just check the vendors on this site. and you might even be able to find a complete longblock ready to drop in. YOu seem to have the process down right and im sure you will make this red beauty a beast
MDW25gt
Good luck. If going the short block route be sure to check the end play on the crank. When I replaced the short block in my 99, I got 3 from SIA before I got one that was in spec on the end play. Cant beat the red!
jblackwell1
this was a dealer sale, he said he was going to try to help me but i doubt it cause he knows im 800 miles away and cant stop by and bitch at him every day. im hoping i can rebuild what i have with forged internals, if not ill start the hunt for a short block that can handle some power. Planning on new turbo, fmic, 1000 injectors, e85 tune, up,dp,and more. Picked these up today, now we can really get that thing out. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0136.jpg
StoplightAssassin
X02 cross-eyed catback huh? some exhaust clamps or large hose clamps will help straighten them right out.
jblackwell1
Im not sure what you mean, its autospeed and its a bit off center but a little pushing and pulling should straighten it out...
StoplightAssassin
hmm...looks very similar to the x02, especially with the crookedness
MrHellrais3R
A new 257 short block will go in no problem with your heads. They come with nitrated crank already and the rods are pretty much bullet proof on the 11's. Pistons, well I would replace them with some nice forged ones. Machined heads with either all new internals or even stock internals will hold 350 no problem. Then it's just getting he supporting mods. Intake, turbo, injectors, turbo inlet, fmic/tmic, good bpv, up/dp, ebcs or mbc, brakes, rotors, and definitely some good tires. Clutch and flywheel combo. Then throw some gauges to help monitor things. All that and a tune and you should have a solid 350awhp easily.
jblackwell1
what have we here, or i guess what dont we have here. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0138.jpg I found it all hiding in the garage, now just to rebuild it and get it back in. Hope to have it back on the road by the end of august, biggest hold up is money for the go fast goodies. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0139.jpg

Then ill try to stop the spending on the money pit haha.
MrHellrais3R
Then ill try to stop the spending on the money pit haha. Heh yeah that's what we all say. Ive been saying that to my self since I bought the car stock. It didn't stay that way for very long. As for the go fast bits, check with vendors on the site. Msprank, jscspeed, and importimageracing offer some excellent deals to forum members. I do highly recommend searching out a reputable Subaru specific shop to tune your car. You can go with either utec, Cobb accessport, or save your self the money and go opensource. Most people go open source due to the versatility of the tuning capabilities. Utec is pretty sweet for tuning as well, just finding a tuner is the hard part. AP's, well I think it's more a 50/50 split on those. Some people hate them, some people love them. jblackwell1
yea i guess i better start looking for a tuner in indiana or ohio then.
jblackwell1
Got it on the engine stand and started tearing it down. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0142.jpg i will do everything that i can with the money i have, first is getting it running with good power, second is making it look pretty. Speaking of pretty, what a nice collection of metal i found in the oil pan. Yes that is a sheered bolt. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0143.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0144.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0146.jpg

jblackwell1
When it blew i was going 65 on cruise control. Granted i had driven about 750 miles back from virginia that day, but i really wasnt that hard on it. I found out what happened also, idk what caused or started it but what ended it was the bolts on one of the rods sheered and let the piston loose causing mass damage. Does anyone know how to get these timing pulleys off? I took off the crank shaft pulley and center of the timing cover but i cannot figure out how to get the rest of the pulleys off so that i can remove the heads. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e2/jeeped07/Legacy%20GT%20Build/IMAG0150.jpg
