Scooby2.5
I have heard the length between sedan and wagon is the same..... With that said if you look at my previous post all the part numbers were different.

Scooby2.5
Integroid, thanks alot for your input. You wouldn't happen to have a measurement would you? The drive shaft that came with my swap, we think was a 99 driveshaft, and it was previously on i'friese's wagon. It measured 60 inches to the input flange and if you add that to the length it was 62. So approx 2 inches of the yoke/ flange goes into the tail of the transmission. I think hammer said the shaft needed to be 63-68 but it looks like a total of 62 works on a wagon. I'll know more this week when my 2.5i 4EAT legacy sedan shaft gets to me. Edited July 9, 2011 by Scooby2.

I'll know more this week when my 2.5i 4EAT legacy sedan shaft gets to me. Post # 24 NSFW, just called Driveshaft Specialist 1-866-455-6622. Talked to Jeff. They have the info. on my drive shaft. Front shaft 24.12", rear shaft 36.12". Uses 1310 XL u-joint & 2002 Forrester Wagon A/T carrier bearing with 05 LGT carrier bearing mounting bracket to bolt to the drive shaft tunnel. How to measure: http://www.thrashdriveshaft.com/Image/2pc%20Sheets/M2-3%202%20pc%20New%20Slip%20and%20Rear%20Flange%20Type%20Pinion%202009.JPG 63" min. is total length. You need a few inches of drive shaft yoke in side the tranny for surface contact for strength, back & forth movement & so it wont leak. If I remember right. I have 4"-5" of drive shaft yoke , inside of the tail shaft housing. About 3\4" play before it bottoms out. The Subaru don't need back & forth play because the whole drive line is solid mounted. Scooby2.5
Well guys I really don't know what to think. I purchased I'frise 08 transmission swap from the marketplace. He had the setup installed by Lachute performance in Montreal Canada and I pretty much got everything in the purchase I needed for install. The setup from Lachute was in a 05 Legacy GT Wagon. The driveshaft concerned me a bit since it was pretty rusted, especially around the carrier bearing so I decided to replace it. The shaft that was sent was from an auto Legacy and i'frise thought it was around a 99 model. It measures from the end that goes into the transmission to the end that bolts to the rearend 62 inches. I purchased a 48,000 mile 2006 legacy 2.5i 4EAT drive shaft and received it today. It has the slide coupler thing near the carrier bearing that goes in and out. When its pushed in the "in" position it measure close to 62 but maybe 61.5 or 61.75. If you pull the slide coupler "out" by pulling on the back part of the shaft, it measures 63 or so... As you can see the older driveshaft has a u-joint in the area where the slide coupler is on the newer one. Also the bearing bracket is a hair off it seems. I can't understand if the shaft needs to be 63 inches how i'frise was using the shaft I received at 62 inches.... Here are a couple of pics of the new shaft next to the old and a Link to ebay purchase: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170624413780&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT#ht_1799wt_1167 http://gallery.me.com/gregnauman/100050/IMG_0693/web.jpg http://gallery.me.com/gregnauman/100050/IMG_0695/web.jpg Edited July 13, 2011 by Scooby2.

HAMMER DOWN
Use this http://www.thrashdriveshaft.com/Imag...ion%202009.JPG Measure from the rear diff. flange to the center of the carrier bearing bolt. Then measure center of the carrier bearing bolt to the end of the tail shaft housing of the 5MT. Then measure the difference in the length between the 5MT & the 6MT. Do the math & you should be able to know before you do your swap witch drive shaft you can use. You want 2" to 3" of the slide yoke inside the tail shaft. Kaos22B
Who has actually changed an 04 STi trans from the male stubs to the female. I read how it is just a matter of pulling the stubs, and changing the seal type, however my concern is the "sundial" on each side that adjusts the diff backlash. Did anyone have any issues? If you personally went through this process please speak up! Anyone? :-(
Scooby2.5
I know hammer, I was just trying to understand how people were able to get the 2.5i shaft to work, because compared to your measurements 63-68 the 2.5i is too short. Now the newer 2.5i shaft has a coupler in the rear shaft just before the carrier bearing (picture above) that seems to make the shaft shorter and longer but is that portion supposed to be pushed in all the way or pulled out?? Never seen a drive shaft like that before.... HAMMER DOWN
IDK, I had a custom made, repairable drive shaft for mine. I took other peoples word that the other drive shaft will work. Quoted from you, "I think hammer said the shaft needed to be 63-68 but it looks like a total of 62 works on a wagon." I can't find that I ever said 63"-68" would work. But I found this. groff, copied from my last post. You can, from what I heard use a drive shaft out of 05 or new legacy A/T. If the A/T driveshaft overall length is between 63.50" & 63.88". It should work. If your drive shaft is around this length, it should work. Hope this helps. Pretty sure this is what I'm going to get as I've been happy with my 3+ for the LGT for about 25,000 miles thus far I'll be talking with my local shop tomorrow to see if they have a 2.5i donor driveshaft for me. I heard that a 4EAT driveshaft will work as well, though I'm not sure from what years. I found one for $50, just need to verify what years work here. I know I'll need to get stubs, circlips and seals as well as fluid and hopefully that will cover nearly everything besides a dccd controller will keep you all informed of my progress as well, probably wont go in until july unless i get too eager groff... you won't need the front axels. yours will work.. if it's a 2004, you pull the stubs out of the 6MT, and put a new set of 05+ axle seals in it. if it's an 06, you can just use your axels straight up. you WILL have to change the rear diff, and again, you will use your axels. to complete this swap, youll need: 6MT tranny flywheel 6mt shift linkage clutch clutch fork / slave cyl. 2005+ 2.5i auto driveshaft 3.90 / 3.545?? rear diff.. (i got mine out of an 04 legacy non-lsd ) i have had this swap in my car for about 10k and 4 months, over 370whp.. i destroyed 1 rear diff playing in the gravel when i hit dry pavement, BOOM.. lol just upgraded to a 35R so we'll see. PS. if you want i can PM you my number, and we can talk in detail about my tirals and tribulations.. mike did it for me.. i'll do it for you WELCOME to the 6MT SWAP CLUB, this list is short Hope that help, Mike Mileage:331487 Retired/Sold
Scooby2.5
OK sorry about that I got my posters mixed up I thought it was you that had said that but i guess it was the other guys. Oh well I guess Ill know soon enough if it works. I just couldn't figure out the length measurement against the 2005 and up shaft some said would work. The only way it would be 63.5 or more on the 2006 2.5i 4EAT shaft I got is to pull the rear driveshaft section out where that slide coupler is by the carrier bearing. Thanks again for all your research to do the swap.... I had followed this for years and I am FINALLY getting ready to do this. Pretty excited to get this done...... IDK, I had a custom made, repairable drive shaft for mine. I took other peoples word that the other drive shaft will work. ItsTheRS
Hi all, ive been referred here to ask this, as i understand you guys know alot about trans swap etc... I have a '89 RS sedan, it currently has the original EJ20, 5spd that it comes out in. Now i think time has come and i want to strip it and rebuild it. Im looking to put a 6spd mt in it but i dont know how well this will work, suggestions from anyone with good knowledge or experience ??? Plan is to get over 800hp with a rebuilt engine or a newer engine. Thanks
Kaos22B
I found a definitive answer regarding replacing the front axle seals. Turns out, early 04 models have a different differential cover plate, which does NOT allow removal of the seal from the outside (a la 5-speed transmissions) http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=34593146&postcount=80 I removed my 04 trans, to confirm that I too, have this issue. I will be having my local dealer replace them and check/set the backlash correctly. This is an area in which I do not want to screw anything up. Edit!!! You CANNOT use the older retainer plates with the stock legacy axles. You must use the newer plates... Seriously FML right now. matt
Manual ecu Are AT ECU's physically different from MT ones, or just programmed differently? If the latter spend $10 on an eBay KKL cable and flash an MT image when you're ready. There's a website out there with tons of stock Subaru ECU images. I forget what it's called, but if you can't find it PM me and I'll send you a stock image that will work.
