It only took me a few min also.

Before this thread I didn't realize there was one in there.

I am real glad I now know.

Nice writeup. Couple of comments.

Not sure what your car is, but on mine you skip the "5 retarded

screws and remove cover" step, and instead remove three

non-retarded screws and then a beefy metal bracket, and then you

can pull away a fabric flap secured by velcro. I'm guessing your

car is newer than mine (2006) and the plastic cover is a less

retarded version of the velcro flap on mine.

My 2007 has the metal bracket as well (but no velcro). Do you think it is ok to leave that bracket out? Unless I'm missing something, it seems to be there just to make it harder to change the filter.

Thanks for the great write up! FYI, these directions worked great on my 2009 Subaru Outback. The most time consuming part was getting out those pesky screws. Thanks for the tips on prying the flange while turning the screw. I decided to leave all 5 screws off after changing the filter. The only screw I put back was the one on the right-side of the glove box.

I take my Subaru to Tires Plus for oil changes/tire rotation. They wanted $50 to replace the cabin filter. I bought the filter for $7.99 at O'Reilly Auto Parts and installed it in about 15 minutes.

My friend just bought a 2011 Subaru and it looks like they made it much easier to get to the cabin filter.

Just want to say Thank You for the writeup. They didn't make it easy -- I quickly stripped that plastic screw/tree that connects the glove box, and ended up just yanking it out with a pair of pliers.

There are a lot of pine trees in my neighborhood: when I pulled the filter out, I had to clean the area free of pine needles too. This is at 62k miles and should definitely have been done a while ago.

well like all the others i enjoyed the directions and regret waiting to change mine. car has 27k on the clock and the filter had a hole in it for some odd reason.

for those who used the target filter like i did. do you notice the smell of the carbon pad at all? i tend to smell it when getting in the car for the first time after turning on the h/c system.

before:

after:

i kept the plastic grid that came with the filter. i was thinking ahead for when it comes time to remove the filter how much of a PITA it would be if the filter bunched up while pulling it out. it also could help keep it flat during use and help prevent any bunching while installed. the plastic clips on our tray help keep the plastic grid down.

i dont think mine is has any carbon in it but its over 1800 microns so i have to jack up the fan speed but i know the air in my cabin is blocking everything from dust to dust mites. i cant even smell disel trucks in front of me untill the filter gets dirty. i changed mine every 15k miles and its black every time.

Wow, and that was the '08 "easier to replace" version? I'll breathe dirty air. lol.

it took me 15-20 min in the dark with a flat head screwdriver and that inclided me cuting the filter to fit the "filter holder". the hardest part is cutting the filter as mine has a metal fence over it and cutting it is a pain, but well worth it. the first time i did this took me 10 min and i had no idea what i was doing, i hope this does not turn people off of doing this, its really simple. and it makes the car smell so much better with a new filter.

it took longer to search for this procedure then to get it done.........3 songs is all it takes, I found a charcoal filter on ebay for $12 shipped,

also the "stupid palstic screws" only need to be backed out about 1/4" - 3/8" then just priy the base out , these "pin -serts" are designed for easy installation, so when your ready to put it all back together again all you have to do is push them in with your thumb you don't need a screwdriver to insert them. again great write up, save me a bunch of time and @ least $85

Thanks Rogue77. Your pictures and instructions totally helped with my '09 Legacy. The cabin filter was incredibly dirty (probably never been changed). Mine had 26,800 miles on it. The fan blows so much better, thanks to the new filter. I used an OEM replacement filter from Subaru. Took me about an hour to replace (due to those funky clips). Will be much easier the next time. If I can do it, anyone can!

^ I think most people have been buying air handler filters and cutting them to size. I bet that would be even cheaper since you get a few filters out of it.

What thickness are you guys running with the homemade filter?

My car has the stupid little flap of fabric that kinda velcro's in around the opening where you pull the filter tray out. I notice in the photos (in the original writeup) that has been replaced by a form fitting piece of plastic. Is there a way to retrofit that piece to my '06 ?

I assume it's fairly important, since they went to some trouble to provide it. I guess it prevents air on the output end of the blower from leaking out there ??

It took more time to trim the filter than it did to get in. It was a 10 minute job tops. Thanks again Rogue77.

Tip: I found that it is easier/quicker to push on the back of the retarded screws than it is to pull them with a screwdriver. You can push on the back with a finger and it is about three twists of the Phillips-head before they pop right out.

Decided to change mine just because the car is new to me and was not sure of it's condition. I put in a Fram filter that has the baking soda and charcoal. That can't be a bad thing. The one that was in there was not too bad at all. Based on wear on the tracks and plastic retainers I would say it was replaced on a regular basis.
