vet
HP went up by 41 but torque only went up 18ftlbs. Shouldn't a larger turbo increase torque as much as HP given that peak numbers occur at roughly the same rpm's as on the 08 models?
Mr. Ed
All right, I normally don't like to have to do this to someone like IWSS, but, the quote below is not true. An impeller is an enclosed propeller, generally centrifugal in nature and used to increase pressure. ... wow... impellers's are not enclosed propellers... I've dealt with impellers directly for the past 8 years as a matter of fact they were open face for ages. He was 100% correct in the difference in a propeller vs impeller... don't make it more difficult than what it is. one's design is draw the other pushes. SubieDriver
According to this site, the hot side is called the turbine or turbine wheel, and the cold side is the compressor. http://www.turbochargedpower.com/Common%20Terms.htm This site also mentions turbine and compressor, but adds that the compressor wheel is also called an impeller. http://www.dieselpowermag.com/tech/general/0706dp_turbocharger_glossary/c_i.html
Spoonwacker
Let's not forget Wikipedia in all this excitement: "An impeller is a rotor inside a tube or conduit to increase the pressure and flow of a fluid." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeller sorry...this forum practically blows goat nuts so im not always on here.Team Pony Express POSTED FROM MY COMPUTER USING A WEB BROWSER
Mr. Ed
I forgot some of the other changes like the sways and the addition of sunroof option http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/31/2009-subaru-impreza-wrx-265-hp-retuned-suspension-sti-tweaks/
SLegacy99
I still can't believe that they upped the power to 265 HP, but not the tranny to a 6 speed. Perhaps for 2010. '08 buyer trades in for an '09 with more power. Same buyer trades in '09 for a '10 with a 6MT. Haha.
vet
You won't see the 6spd in the WRX next year, it would require a significant price jump.
welby
Why the newfound "requirement" for a 6 speed anymore? More is not always better. Closer spaced ratios could only mean more shifting than necessary, IMO. Look at the Mazdaspeed 6; By every indication it should be faster than the LGT, but everything I've read says that they're slower due to the extra shift involved. I'm all for rowing gears, but I don't want a 6 speed transmission. Then if 6 is good, 7 must be better, right? lol
IwannaSportSedan
I agree with you, Welby. However, the WRX STI 6MT is a nicer unit than the WRX/LGT/Forester 5-speed. More robust, better AWD, and smoother shifting. Plus, you have to take final drive gearing into account, and for some reason Subaru gears the 6MTs and 5MTs to cruise at about the same RPMs... One would think they could lower the cruising RPMs with a taller final drive, while keeping the first, second, and third gears short, and keeping the acceleration. They could do it with the 5MT, but the intervals start to get a bit wide, and it gets harder to match revs, or too easy to fall off turbo boost pressure, or the NA power band.
