govolsguy31
HAHAH! I did a search for tail light tint laws in TN, which lead me to this. These are hilarious! http://www.strangefacts.com/laws.html My favorite one is: The law states that more than 3000 sheep cannot be herded down Hollywood Blvd. at any one time. bravonoj
a trick I used to tint my tail lights was to cut an oversized sheet to fit. Take your time getting it on - and stretch it tight as you can as you do it. If there is ANY dust on your light the film will not stick well. Static and physics hard at work... When you have it to the edge take a SHARP knife (and I mean SHARP) and flatten it against the edge of the light to cut it almost at an angle so that it is beveled to the edge of the light. Then move down, streeeetch it to the edge again, and cut another flat angle to the edge. Do this the whole way around and you should have a solid product. Two trips to HD and three days of wondering why it peeled at the corner, and I had this process down. Here are some pics: http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x120/bravonoj/SNV11613.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x120/bravonoj/SNV11615.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x120/bravonoj/SNV11617.jpg http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x120/bravonoj/SNV11616.jpg
optyks
So i picked everything to do this today and gave it a shot.... The lack of adhesive makes the tint WAY hard to apply. With my last tail tint job it was extremely hard to do because of the shape of the light (08 impreza 5dr contour....) but not because it wouldn't stick anywhere.. These just... you can't stick them in place and stretch them to properly fit. You have to get it the right size and shape else air bubbles will stay and, even with a squeegee, they come back. Granted now I have feet and feet worth to practice with but I think some $40 vinyl from Mr. Mercado of BlueBatMobile would be a much better choice. 7 year warranty as well. Two trips to HD and three days of wondering why it peeled at the corner, and I had this process down. You and I are on the same page, only I did less stretching and more trimming. I laid a large piece of tint over the taillight and cut out a very rough shape of the light with scissors. I had over and inch overlap all the way around from this cut. I then used a small hard squeegee to smooth out the tint over the light. Once I had it reasonably smoothed out, I used a razor to trim the around the edge of the light. (Pretty much just like you said with the angle) At this point the tint will pretty much held itself on there, but still wasn't lined up and in perfect fit. I had to squeegee it out more, getting every bubble out it, and then trim it again. I was pretty anal about getting it perfect and repeated the process a total of 3-4 times on each light. While I was pushing hard on the squeegee I never had to pull and stretch the tint. My tint has held up through all four seasons. The only time a corner would peel off was when I hit directly with the sprayer at the car wash. When that happened, I simply smoothed it back out over the light with my hand and forgot about it. bravonoj
yup sounds about right - every once in a while a corner will peel up on mine and I just peel it back a little bit, clean it out (usually I found they peel when there's road dust under it, etc) on BOTH the lens and the underside of the tint, and restretch and press it back down. 1 year later almost and it hasnt let me down yet. jimlatro
Hey guys, I always liked the look of tinted tails on the Legacy but could never justify spending upwards of $50 for them. So i was at Home Depot the other day and saw this Gila Smoked window film (its in the doors and windows department) $12 for the film and $8 for the application kit. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f145/rurouni_xgt/IMG00066.jpg Make sure you clean your lights with the suppled spray before then I just cut 2 squares of material to just stick on the tails once stuck on I trimmed them to match with a exacto knife/razor. Do not worry about air bubbles for now. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f145/rurouni_xgt/IMG00067.jpg after trimming them to shape spray the film with the solution and start working out the air bubbles with the supplied squeegee. i found the best way was to peel of the film and apply it with the squeegee as you go. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f145/rurouni_xgt/IMG00068.jpg After getting most of the bubbles out here ya go http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f145/rurouni_xgt/IMG00069.jpg http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f145/rurouni_xgt/IMG00070.jpg Thanks for the great info first couple of times I had a corner peel, I used a little "double sided Scotch tape" and its done
05_Silver_GT
You can buy per cut tail tint on ebay for 25 bucks shipping and all. Plus its Vinyl Tint so it wont peel and its a bit more durable. r2rs
i tried this and i couldnt get the tint to stretch and it looked like ass, when i get some more time i'm going to try it again and take even more time to get it to work. wasthe tint you guys used easily stretchable, i even tried using a hair dryer to get it to stretch more but to no avail
adversexreality
resurrecting an old thread, but a good idea would be to use an adhesion promoter.. or use an alcohol solvent to clean and wax off the lenses.. which will prevent adhesion. milesej05
This is REALLY easy to do! I picked up the same supplies at Home Depot for around $20 dollars (tint=$12, application kit=$7, Xacto knife=$2). I first applied the tint to the tail lights and then used the Xacto knife to get as close to the edge as possible but didn't seem to work that well. I ended up with some parts overhanging a bit and other parts showed the lights a bit. Got sick of it after about a day and peeled them off. I took them inside and traced them onto a piece of paper then cut out the template. I then placed the template onto the unrolled sheet of tint and cut, using the Xacto knife, about 2 mm inside of the template. Flipped the template over and did it again to get the other side. Perfect Fit! Placed them onto the taillights and squeegied out all the bubbles and leftover solution. The kicker to making them stay is to grab a hairdryer and run it back and forth, up and down with high heat for about a minute then go do the other side and go and then repeat. No peels, bubbles, or tail lights showing. Looks great and I would suggest if anyone else is going to do this just rough estimate the tint and cut as close to the edge as possible then peel em off and make a template. And down the road if you buy a darker tint, lighter tint, or a po-po makes you take them off you have a template to make some new ones quick. here are some pictures of mine (sorry bout the dirty car, its been raining in Nebraska the past 3 days) Right side done ALL DONE! what you think? milesej05
Well tint came off after about 3 weeks and 3 washes, so I just nite-shaded them and left the reverse light clear. Here's some of the finished pics, will get some installed on the car later this week...after it stops raining.
jimlatro
Great mod- get'n a 'fix it ticket' sucks! I have loads of tint left. lol
milesej05
Nebraska cops don't really give "fix it" tickets here in nebraska for tinted tails. I was pulled over 3 different times in my mustang and the only thing the fuzz told me was to remove my smoked license plate covers each time...nothing about my tail light covers.
