jah64
Opie, Hey Nice Hurricane ties:) Thanks for the pictures and explantion. The bilsteins seem to be quite the stout strut. No wonder the ride is so much better.

Opie
As you can see by the pics, the lowest is the stock struts with STi pinks and the Spec-B/STi pinks is only slightly higher, maybe 10-15mm tops. But it rides and handles so, so much better. http://www.subaruchallenge.com/Wills/05/LegGT2.JPG
VXCL
how much did the spec b shocks cost? the sti springs? the new front mounts? is it less than $1000 im used to a koni yellow/eibach setup on my acura and it was a little too firm even though they were adj dampers. i should also mention it was easily a 2"drop. Opie
Yes, it was under $1000 Got the Struts used for $400 and the Springs and mounts new from AVO for $550 (+ shipping)
Rexmobbin
Opie, who'd you get the struts from? AVO? or a private source? that setup looks like just about what i'd like. sporty, well-matched, and lower than stock and firm.

AVO? or a private source? that setup looks like just about what i'd like. sporty, well-matched, and lower than stock and firm.[/quote'] I actually got them from another member here on the board, I believe he purchased them from Yahoo Auctions-Japan through Rinka. I know AVO can get brand new struts if you want, not sure on the cost though...

SUBE555
Dangit, now I want more toys for my car! Maybe I'll have her all outfitted by this summer. Pffff...hahahahahaha At least perhaps have suspension and brakes taken care of. The full Spec B w/ Pinks looks like the setup and the ride height looks absolutely perfect! CRAZY KEN
...for ya Opie!!! Is bilstein the only company that can be fitted with the STi strut? Does Bilstein or any other company have an adjustable dampening strut? When you installed everything...I am pretty sure you got an alignment...to what specs did you align your ride? Did you sit in the car for 2-3 hours when it was getting aligned? Sorry...gotta ask, CRAZY KEN
apexjapan
I know AVO can get brand new struts if you want, not sure on the cost though... Last time we checked on that, it was in the $1800USD ballpark for OEM struts from the Subaru dealer new. :o If I ever replace my suspension, I'll promise to sell mine to a LegacyGT.com member. Seriously, I would like to talk more about suspensions options in a few months....once I pay off the holiday bills and projects I have going on. I am assuming you wouldn't want to get into sourcing SpecB take-offs (besides your own).
Opie
...for ya Opie!!! Is bilstein the only company that can be fitted with the STi strut? I am confused by your question...Bilstein makes the struts I have with STi springs...you can use the Legacy STi Springs with any Legacy strut, OEM or aftermarket. Does Bilstein or any other company have an adjustable dampening strut? Not that I am aware of. When you installed everything...I am pretty sure you got an alignment...to what specs did you align your ride? I had it set to the OEM spec's with slightly more front camber. Did you sit in the car for 2-3 hours when it was getting aligned? I sat in the car, but it only took a little more than an hour! It was actually not to far off (I marked the settings pretty well before I swapped everything). I nalso drove the car for more than a week before I had it aligned to be sure everything had settled. Sorry...gotta ask, CRAZY KEN No problem!
CRAZY KEN
...SORRY!!! My first ? was suppose to be: Is bilstein(strut) the only company that can be fitted with the STi springs? i.e. Does KYB, Tokico, Koni, etc. etc. make a strut that can be fitted with the STi Springs? Thanks, CRAZY KEN I like this kinda setup! Simple and sweet!! Nothing to worry about!!!

At the present I'm not sure if any of the other strut companies make a strut for the new Legacy, I have heard Tokico has adjustables in development and I would assume KYB would as well. As far as I know, the Bilstein's can only be purchased through Subaru of Japan as a Genuine part.

SWortham
Awesome. I've heard good things about Bilstein. They'd be my first choice for struts. Sounds like you've got a really nice setup there.
rc0032
Opie – I have looked over both your posts on the install and I don’t see any pictures of the rear spring and strut combo. Do you have any?
Opie
Opie – I have looked over both your posts on the install and I don’t see any pictures of the rear spring and strut combo. Do you have any? Hmmm, nope I didn't take any pics of the rears because all the USDM parts worked fine with them. The rear is a coil-over shock design. Very simple to install. Basically the spring goes over the shock and sits on a perch built on ot the shock, then a top mount goes over the top of the spring with the shock in the center. A single nut holds it all together. the upper mount is bolted to the body with two studs that come up into holes in the trunk floor (at the corners where the rear seat meets the trunk). Then one single bolt holds the bottom of the shock to the rear suspension. Here's the only pic I have that includes the rear shocks: http://www.subaruchallenge.com/Wills/05/Spec-B.jpg

Everything can be reached from the trunk after removing the carpet liner. Any other pointers?
Opie
But you don’t need to remove the rear seat to do the install correct? Everything can be reached from the trunk after removing the carpet liner. Any other pointers? Correct, just the carpet liner needs to be removed. As far as pointers, the nuts inside the trunk are 14mm, they are very cramped to get to especially with a rachet wrench and socket. Easiest tool to use is a racheting type reversable wrench ( http://www.gearwrench.com/reversible.html ). If you have these in your toolbox it'll be quick and easy. If you have a standard (non-racheting) wrench it's a little more time consuming but still do-able.
