I just wanted to let all the 5eat guys,i am one too, that amsoil atf is now available for our trannys. i spoke with company today and my friend told me that the atf had been reformulated back in december 2006 and was now approved to be used in our subarus, the addition of the atf now being available+ a tranny cooler could really be some good news! should bring down tranny temps alone and even more with cooler. let me know if i can help anyone interested.:)

Just so everyone knows, the 5EAT transmission that is found in the 2005+ Legacy GT's, 2005+ Outback XT's & 3.0R's and all Tribeca's carries an IDEMITSU ATF/HP fluid designation that as far as I know is not offered by any other lubricant manufacturer.

It is not the same fluid used in the 4EAT transmissions.

I'd like to see a picture and/or documentation that shows that Amsoil now has an ATF that meets the IDEMITSU ATF/HP designation....I know their Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) does not currently meet this classification and should not be used in the 5EAT transmission but is acceptable to be used in the 4EAT transmissions. Unless Amsoil has re-classified this ATF recently I would caution against using it until it does.

Richard,

As per our conversation concerning your 2005 Subaru Legacy transmission, the AMSOIL ATF is now formulated to meet Subaru ATF specifications. The attached files are scans of our product selection guide for this year. The highlighted items on the page confirm AMSOIL’s recommendation to use our universal ATF in place of the Subaru ATF.

We hope this is helpful, and should you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Darryn Wallace

I used to be an Amsoil dealer, and I still use the oil in all my cars. I'm glad to see the ATF reformulated for the subaru. I can say from experience that their ATF is amazing. I had put it in my dad's 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee (witht eh 318 V8, na notoriously crappy tranny). He must've developed a leak somewhere about a year after we put the ATF in there. He was towing a boat and noticed the car was shifting funny. The ATF was almost completely off the stick, and getting very dark. This is towing from oregon to california over the mountain passes on a 90+ degree day. We had nowhere to stop, so drove it another 60 miles to get more ATF. When we got it home (this was a 1200 mile trip) we flushed it and refilled with amsoil. The thing never missed a beat (until the car was destroyed in an accident about 50K miles later).

I am a dealer too, i used to have it in my 4wd truck about 10 years ago, put it in tranny and differentials, couldnt believe how cool the the carpet around my shifter stayed even in the middle of summer and it shifted as smoothly in in cold temps as it did in warm temps. the stuff really takes the heat out. ;)

Thanks for the info!

Are there any special markings/labels to notify the consumer of the reformulated product, or will it be packaged exactly the same? I ask because if it already is in circulation then it would be nice to know in order to avoid a "surprise".

The label on the bottle of tranny fluid has to say nissan matic type d,j &k then you will be fine,if they arent sure i would not use it. if you have to, have someone order you some.(me)j.k..All joking aside be sure it is the type i mentioned above.I am planning on switching mine on june 22nd,the day before my vf-40/18g swap,i had mine flushed out less than 2 months ago with subaru fluid+bg additive, its probaly gonna take you about 15-16qts at least. when i took my car to get it done the guy told me it takes at least that many quarts to make the machine work that does the flush.hope this helps answer your ?s.:)

Went to Amsoil web site put p/n in search couldn't fifure out which one to bye. The scans did really tell me which product met the subaru requirements. I have an 08 so won't change till next year about 15K. Is there any reason not to change early at 15k. I live in mountains and would like the extra cooling

If you want extra cooling - just put in a transmission cooler...?

I also want to upgrade to this oil. I am right around 16k and I am having my 15k service done at my Dad's local shop. A tranny cooler matched with synthetic ATF should bring temps down 30+.

Why not just both
