Doe the humming start out very faint and get louder as time goes on? I only started noticing it today. I'm almost at 20k miles and it's very faint around 65MPH. Go higher and the engine noise drowns it out, go lower then 50 or so and it goes away. I will try to jack up the car and check for play but I don't have easy access to a lift. Any addtional ways to check for this? I just need a better description of the sound as it is pretty faint right now, thanks! :D

Subaru should implement demerit points to dealerships that dismiss real issues (especially potentially unsafe issues like bad wheel bearings).

Thats what mine did. It kind of snuck up on me. When I first realized that the humming was there I wasn't sure if it was new or if it was always there.

^Hmmm... that's exactly how I felt too. I know the boxer has some noise and rumble to it, I love it, but this sound seemed different. As I was listening for it with the radio off, my girlfriend even made a comment on it. She's no car specialist but she still heard something too. Very odd...

I really don't know if it a wheel bearing or not but when I going between 80 or 100 mph it makes a hi pich whine in the right front sometimes it does sometimes it do not does that sound like a wheel bearing?
Can't remember if it was constant when it first started but it was noticable around 40 mph. And after a while I always heard it.

I noticed a loud humming noise around 45 mph - it was a bad wheel bearing - rear driver side. I'm at about 40k miles - luckily the wheel bearings are covered under the 60k powertrain warranty. The dealer still got me for a "diagnostic fee" which apparently they want from anyone to look at a car that is out of the 36k warranty. Oh well.

I had road noise so bad that I couldn't talk on my cell phone even with the windows up. I took it to the dealer and they blamed the coilovers. I took it to Crawford and they actually looked into the problem instead of trying to find a scapegoat like the dealer. They properly diagnosed it as both front wheel bearings being bad. I took it back to the dealer who confirmed Crawfords diagnosis and fixed it under warranty. They did however try to cop out and blame the bad wheel bearings on my longer studs I am running for my 5mm spacers. I think he was really reaching on that one though.

^^ yeh, 5mm offset change is unlikely to prematurely wear the wheel bearing.

unless you were running excessively wide wheels like 8.5" or something on

255 size tires or something or another.

my dealer was real cool about it... and they should be. It's an inconvenience

that the wife and i had to drop off and pick it up. dealer gets paid for the

work from SIA... we didn't get paid for the time or gas.

Is this wheel bearing problem something that Subaru will make a Heavy Duty Bearing for to eliminate the bearing failure??? I'm going to the dealer that I bought my car from 4 months ago, this coming Tues. (7/11) with the same " humming sound...around 40MPH " and my car has 6800 miles on it..and I've been listening to the hum for the last 600ish miles...

Not *quite* as loud as a DC10, perhaps, but yeah that's a good description. Should be fairly noticeable on the freeway with the radio off.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

In other words: SEARCH before you post!
