cBax
Made some progress, I suppose. Today we matched up each piston to the best fitting bore. Then moved onto filing rings. I'll say that this is a fairly tedious process. And I humbly admit that I went over my target gap on the 1st try, even thought it took 8-10 tries, then just like that...over..not sure wtf happened. And Im not sure what I'm going to about it. It's a 2nd ring and it's at .026. My target was .0235. Manley has 2 different piston ring sheets on their site. Assuming the same 3.92 http://www.manleyperformance.com/dl/tech/piston-rings.pdf 3.92*0.007=0.02744 http://www.manleyperformance.com/dl/tech/Subaru-Piston-and-Ring-Installation-04-30-14.pdf 3.92*0.006=0.02352 I was following the Subaru specific instructions. Further searching on nasioc shows others suggesting that the 2nd ring should be opened up a little further anyways. Anyone see any issue running the top rings at .0235 and the 2nd ones all at .026? fahr_side
The top ring should have the larger gap. See now why I advised against power tools? Sent from a device using some software. cBax
Ha-ha. I think my "help" was more of a distraction. It's very hard to tell how much you are removing with the grinder. And Ive learned that it's better to start with a smaller feeler gauge, that way you know when you're close as opposed to knowing you went over. All a learning experience... No biggie. Would you suggest a new set of rings? 1st glance said they were $100, but I wonder if that was for a set of 4. cBax
2 new sets of rings ordered. $50 chalked up to a learning experience. It seems like the Top vs Bottom ring being larger is different per piston/ring manufacturer. The old Manley instructions said the top was bigger. Now they are the same. CP says the bottom is bigger. I'm just going to target .0235-.024 on them all. '05 Outback XT www.facebook.com/baxleysspeedshop www.baxleysspeedshop.com
fahr_side
Manley changed the specs for the Subaru pistons a while back. Go with the new instructions. cBax
More pictures. Nothing too informative, just me playing with the camera. I was really concerned about the rod ends riding on the cylinder walls at 1st. Once I got a couple pistons out, the towels became much harder to keep from getting sucked into the crank, so I took them out. Seemed fine.. http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0004.jpg This is what I used to pull the wrist pins. http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0006.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0010.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0013.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0020-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0023-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0025-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0034-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0054-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0062-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0069-2.jpg Should have it on the stand and get everything aside from one head installed today. Still waiting on a dowel pin. I don't think there is anything stopping me from assembling the bottom end too. I've got a few more things to clean up anyways. AVCS gears, OCVs, a couple hard lines and valve covers. If we break 40 deg, I've got stuff to paint too. cBax
Here's a few pictures from today. Sorry about the dark pics. I just realized that my exposure was set to -2 for some reason and I wasn't looking at the previews as I went. http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0127-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0132-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0142-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0163_2.jpg Spent a bunch of time cleaning hardware. But I made some progress. Basically just buttoned the bottom end up and started on the front/top. Hopefully be able finish it up next weekend. I figure another 4-6 hours of assembly. And 4-6 hours of installation, along with installing all the gauges. cBax
can anyone confirm that this is the correct seal for the input shaft on the 5EAT? I think it is....I cant find the specific seal on Heurberger's site and the opposedforces site seems to be down. Is 23070A the Subaru part #? If so, I'll just get it locally. I'd just like to cross reference to whatever the parts guy finds. http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/23070A.html '05 Outback XT www.facebook.com/baxleysspeedshop www.baxleysspeedshop.com
cBax
High of 9 deg this weekend! Yup, no progress planned. lol I can do mid 20s. But 9 is just too cold. My heaters wont make a bit of difference. Tools hurt to hold at that temp. I really need to put insulation and real heat on the priority list. Of course its supposed to be 45 next Tuesday. cBax
Subbed. welcome to the party! You know you're in Maine when the shorts come out and the windows go down at the 1st sight of 40 degrees! Loving the forecast and the extra daylight in the evening these days. Hoping to get this project moving along soon so I can get it out of the way and on to the race car before the season starts! I'd hate to postpone this until mid summer. A guy has to have priorities, right? I think I'm a solid weekend away from starting installation. There is quite a bit still to do to the car, but hopefully not much more than another weekend's worth. So very much do-able. cBax
Made some progress today! A blistering 40 deg this morning meant nothing was stopping me from the garage. I didn't get as much done as I had hoped. Amazing how tedious all the cleaning and thread chasing and cleaning and cleaning and cleaning is. I should probably be doubling my time estimates from here on out. haha. I'm having fun. I'm basically just following the vaca pics, chasing the rabbit holes. Got to one point where I remembered you guys talking about a water pipe needing to be done before the heads. Came inside and sorted through tear down pics, saw I removed the small black pipe last and saved myself some frustration by installing it then. thanks! cBax
50 degrees and rain, along with the lack of fires to put out at work yesterday was good enough excuse to take a 1/2 day off and make some more progress. Par for the course, everything is taking forever. Started with this. http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0007-2.jpg TIC FU bolts. No clue why Subie didn't do this to begin with. http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0016-2.jpg Cleaned the AVCS gears. They don't look like they've been too active. Lots of sludge and definitely some glitter present. I read Underdog's post and took note of the seals and springs, but still managed to toss them across the bench the 1st time I got the rotor to pop out. Funny how the second one always goes smoother. http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0020-2_1.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0032-2.jpg http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/DSC_0045-2.jpg All cleaned up.
