05 Legacy GT wagon 5EAT Engine Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Hmm, where to start seems to always be the question when writing a paper (which is what this feels like...) I don't get on here much but here is the summary. Last year I had purchased my Legacy, now I would have liked a manual but this car had the lowest miles in a 500 mile radius and was in budget. Upon my way home to get the car on a lift to do some checking and maintenance, the turbo detonated from a clogged banjo bolt. Safe to say I was not a happy camper, but stuff happens from people not taking care of their vehicles. Being the busy grad student that I am, I knew it would be sometime before I would get a chance to fix the car. Granted this is not my first subaru, but my first time rebuilding the motor. Fast forward to now I have acquired a mountain of parts and hoping to get this beauty running again.

Also my front half shafts are both split, was going to remove them then a bolt sheered on the drivers side... Any suggestions on how to get out and I cant find the part number. Its the lower control arm bolt I guess? I am having trouble loading the pic but will try later.

leave the stock intake on the car, get a new oil return hose from the turbo. I bolt the turbo to the up pipe, makes things easier.

I have the IAG kit for the oil return line, and it didnt come with the stock intake. That polished one is the one that was on the car when I bought it. I dont plan on using it.

Do you know where to get the new bolts from to re-assemble the gears ? There's a link in Jmp's thread, in the sticky in the 4th gen forum.

Remember to remove the banjo bolt filters, both of them.

I removed both of them, also what is your recommended oil change wise for the break in? I have some REDLINE break in fluid and lots of Castrol oil and some Subaru Filters ready to go. I was thinking 100 miles, 1000 miles, and then normal 3,500 miles?

After the first 20 minutes of run time, then I think I went 500 miles, then drove a 1500 miles. Then went with Amsoil 5w-40 European Full SAPS. Next change was at 4000 miles, then 6000 miles. Then to my normal 7-8000 miles OCI.

I just checked my little note pad that I keep a record in.

Think I would be okay starting on synthetic? This is the additive I am adding. I only use a half a bottle with each oil fill. http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=121&pcid=21

That should be fine, but most of us just use a good oil. I used Castrol GTX for the first oil changes.

Your local dealer would also know just stop in there. Bring your VIN. They like to ask for it.

While your at the dealership pick up some bolts to bolt the turbo to t e up pipe. May be some new nuts for the DP at the hot side of the turbo too.

Remember to use anti-seize on all threads.

Yeah I have been using anti-seize on pretty much everything. The Grimmspeed up pipe came with new nuts and studs. Ill have to look into getting new nus for the downpipe.

Stainless steel hardware will make things 100x easier if you ever need to disassemble again. Definitely worth the extra cost.

Build looks like it's coming along nicely!
