mass-hole
I can't decide if I like how this looks on DGM. I bet painting them body color would look good but black on DGM is up in the air.
Zakster87
Have you seen the more recent pic of my car? I have everything in the front blacked out, except the headlights, and they're next to go.http://i.imgur.com/xWSr5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/cPjrApX.jpg
09Pegasus
I really want to do this mod, but like many of the others.. Putting my headlights in the oven scares me just a tad.. And when I see three or four different times and temps. it doesnt help. It is one of the best looking mods you can do though, especially to a darker LGTs! aac0036
How do we think gunmetal housings will look on a black car? Leaving the projector ring chrome, but can't decide on flat black or gunmetal for my OBP.
projectrang
I've been experimenting with some different colors. I'll share what all I've tried so far. By the way, this is on the '08-'09 headlights. Starting out http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_180553.jpg Using Duplicolor Metalcast. This is the ground coat. http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_195215.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_195243.jpg Then, I used the smoke color metalcast on top of the basecoat. http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_203841.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_203855.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_203924.jpg Reflector removed, but diffusor still in place http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_204948.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_205002.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_205010.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_205022.jpg I just taped off just a section of the reflector for the turn signal, since I didn't want to keep the entire side clear. http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_205034.jpg Comparison http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_205614.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131101_205630.jpg Headlights turned on http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131102_154057.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/2013-11-02154359.png Compared to.. http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131102_154105.jpg http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/2013-11-02154309.png Then, I decided to try a bit of semi-gloss black to see if I would like that http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u365/projectrang/20131102_165505.jpg I recently tried some VHT Niteshades over top of a coat of the metalcast ground coat, but it just looks black. I tried it on the chrome too, but it comes out looking black also if you get enough on there to be an even coat. I think, in the end, I'll stick with my original plan: metalcast ground coat, then metalcast smoke over top of that.
samcuomo
This is the best picture of mine. I didn't get to take a good one before the snow hit. Had to paint the projector rings because the chrome peeled off, but I'm actually liking the black.
Madikaya
Finally, I've managed to black out my headlights. Knowing how easy yet tedious this project is, I took my time and may have "derped" around in the process. I ran into issues with masking off the special reflective part by the turn signal. I'm not a huge fan of chrome anyways so when the "chrome" started chipping off, I just said f*** it and painted it all black. We currently are dealing with the bumper not fully fitting into place. There's an annoying gap between the passenger side headlight and the bumper. Other then that I'm very happy with how it all turned out. I've learned to stay positive during and after every car project. Things happen Anyways thanks to everyone's step by step guidance and advice it definitely made all the difference in the end and my headlights look AWESOME! I searched for "delicate" tape at home depot and lows and could not seem to find any. This is the set up I ended up using. http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad189/madikaya/IMG_3470_zps48ce5a49.jpg Before http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad189/madikaya/9fddc5c8-8251-4190-bd28-93159c97b090_zps57186769.jpg After http://i934.photobucket.com/albums/ad189/madikaya/IMG_3499_zps3f8f383c.jpg

Make sure all your plastics on the bottom of the car are sitting properly when you slide the bumper cover on, that was always my issue.

seanyb505
Decided to give this a go this weekend. My chrome peeled on the ring, so I just painted it black as well. MrTris
In a cursory scroll-through, I don't know if anyone's done the blackout with Nightshades. Just wanted to share what I did -- The pictures are pretty self-explanatory. I'm currently looking for a set of 06-07s to do (I want that black chrome look) the same way, so, my set is up for trade if anyone's interested. Wanna replace those pesky torx screws in the headlights? See the Fastenal package for the part number. Can be had at your local shop for less than $3. The "Samsung" LED 3157As are from Amazon. Look 'em up under that name. Haven't gotten a chance to run them yet, but from what I can tell, they should be pretty bright. Will definitely overcome any reflectivity obstacles, if any, from smoking out the corners. Other than not matching the factory "black", I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out. aac0036
Did you reuse the glue to put it back together? Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk I wouldn't. The best thing to do is use Butyl Windscreen Sealant which comes in a roll, roll it into a thin noodle, and drape it along the crevice that the lens goes into on the housing. Sent from a box in my pocket.

MrTris
Adding more butyl rubber on the first bake is probably a bit overkill. Most of us do just fine with reheating the existing rubber, pushing it into the channel and pressing the lights back together.
skrotes
so can you get pulled over for not having the orange reflector pieces in your headlights? does anyone know exactly what the law is? and has anyone blacked out their headlights then replaced the yellow reflectors back into the headlights? 07wrxstage2
Lol no you won't get pulled over dude. Haha, that's too funny Not sure on the flector but I know it's illegal in some states to not have orange bulbs for blinkers. Maybe that's what hes referring to. Here in MD your not suppose to switch them to clear although I done it on the past 4 vehicles ive owned and it's never been an issue. By the way im assuming as long as you don't open the lights multiple times you can reuse the glue that originally attaches the lens? Also I know its a straight forward diy but how much more will a heat gun help? Just curious because I have access to a master heat gun at work and could borrow for the weekend. Alex D. Pesh21
Anyone do different colors other than black and grey? Im thinking of color matching the housing with my SWP paint, or maybe dupli-color's anodized blue. Thoughts?
MrTris
It's been done before, isn't as pleasing in person as it is in your head. Also expensive to have properly matched to SWP. What's the goal for the car? If you are going to create a unified theme and show it semi-professionally, then, by all means, get down with your bad self. That said, if it's just your DD and you're looking for ways to "personalize" it, I suggest stickers. It's less work for the same result.
