  1. Thats an option three...But I seriously doubt it. First that time sert would have to be pulled, AGAIN... number three for that hole if it survived. Unless there is some magical fill stick for this kind of aluminum I really doubt a wire feed or tig could get down there. I just don't see this plug staying sealed or tight over the long term with this much material cut away. All the other holes were good... But this one.
  2. So I'm at a cross road. The machine shop failed me on the time sert install so I have two options here. Find used heads to swap my parts (if needed) or buy new cores. Who has the best price on new cores? Although I feel these guys tried their best I feel this was a little beyond their capabilities. If I get new cores IMHO they should be making this right. At this moment I'm not a happy customer.
  3. Well I have the heads back. Not happy. The second set of time serts still didn't seat all the way. So spot face to get them flush with the aluminum... First head after this looked good. Second one he borked the thing and cut too much material on two sides of the plug seating surface and counter bored it a little. Have to sleep on it some to decide to plow forward and hope the plug seals or bite it and get two new castings. Then find another machine shop. Also found out I need to pay a load to the state and feds. This life thing is not getting any easier.
  4. Funny part. I drink waaaaayyyyy less than I used to. Well see about install date when I get the forking heads. Dude didn't call me today. Spent better part of the day with the daughter instead. Kid needed cloths. Saturday depends on if practice happens. Sunday should be full day engine assembly. I still need to buy some clamps. Will get that done this weekend.
  5. Machine shop will hand me back heads this Saturday. Divorce is final with the state. Let the games begin!
  6. Agreed. I have only used subaru HP in mine. Transmission fix is a last resort but seemed to help in my case. I had 140K and always drove in D 90% of the time. Now that I'm at 160K will be adding another bottle to the next pan drop during my rebuild. One item to note the Lucas is thick. It takes a while to get it in there. To assist, keep it warm and mix with ATF to help it into the transmission. Place 1/2q in the transmission then transfer Lucas into that same bottle and shake. Once you have some capacity opened up in the Lucas bottle refill it with ATF and shake. I can get about 5q+ out of the transmission by lifting the passenger side of the car while draining.
  7. Have you changed ATF at all? If never just get 5q and see if it clears. and/or Try some Lucas Transmission Fix next time you do a pan drop. Substitute the ATF volume replaced with the concoction. It was suggested by climberD a couple years back when we were talking about my car's history. Another thing is just drive in sport mode primarily. The increased in line pressure helps.
  8. Good point, but now after spending a good chunk of the last three years troubleshooting and fixing this one? Not sure I need a big shift in platforms. Well see after I get it back on the road if I feel the same way. However this car has been one of the most reliable car I've owned. That it's end is head gasket failure and most of us take that as #YNANSB. Well then shame on us in some cases. I possibly could have gone farther on the SB but chose a longer term path, I hope. I had reliability 120K before I really stuck my nose in it. Otherwise relied on mechanics to wrench for me. Oil changes and general maintenance is all I performed at that point. But now after having such a bad experience with the local stealership. I'll do it myself thanks. So in the end I'll probably be able to recite the mod list and most part numbers by heart with gen 4 Subaru. Don't think I'm going anywhere soon.
  9. My mom picked up a 2013 A3 wagon in diesel. I drove it back to her place to pick up the her extra Tacoma while I'm rebuilding the car. That motor has some nuts and gets way better mileage... But then there is the maintenance on a glorified VW. Nope. I'll stick with the OBXT for a good long time.
  10. OBXT was my answer for with kids car and dog. Couldn't do minivan or another SUV. I was happy to see the Navigator leave the fleet after two head fixes and 91 octane requirement.
  11. I fought it for a year or more as well. The intake gaskets not fixing it was the nail in the coffin for the old OVCS.
  12. I'm liking the fact it isolates the TMIC from the turbo with the hose. Looks good guys and thanks for submitting your feedback to the rest of us.
  13. Is there a big difference between 05 and 09 back there? Dunno cause IR 06. Don't seem to recall a line crossing the pitch stop. But I could be wrong, been a few months since I've spent any time on the actual car.
  14. I'm considering placing a temp sensor for the transmission... Is there a decent combination of inline manifolds out there for the temp sensor? Not all that interested in brass and more interested in stainless construction.
  15. Yes since August. No harm in your comments. I want this in before it's hotter than hell again. Taking it one chip at a time.
  16. Been collecting parts and such 10 months ago, pulled the motor with FJuan mid August 2014. Plenty of challenges aside from the rebuild taking my time too. Making progress again, feels good.
  17. I should have snapped a shot of them carting my heads back into the shop. Overhearing them across the shop I could hear Jr say... "I told him this was how they turn out." Sr was having none of it. Jr blamed his install tool... Or the fact he didn't counter bore correctly... I just smiled and said 1 is perfect... The other three not so much. Sr gets me and will make it right.
  18. LOL, No. I'll possibly get the heads back Friday. Looking for part numbers right now for Diff to engine bolts. Could not find them while at Subaru this morning. Had to order the water jacket crossover orings, not included in the block seal kit. They did have the reference for the flex plate to converter bolts and we found the studs no nuts. Need these and a load of clamps and some fuel hose and I can keep building. Target install weekend is the 7th of March if nothing else gets in the way. BTW it was as I suspected. Rob Jr got a Rob Sr foot in his ass to redo the time sert install. 1 out of 4 are not good odds for him either.
  19. Machine shop called and he wants to see the time sert install on the heads, so this can be right... East Bay bound... I have a feeling Jr is going to get Sr foot in his ass sending these out like this.
  20. Interested. Please PM me the details. Pretty sure I'm going cubby mount. Have a 52mm dual mount ready to go.
  21. Installed Windage tray, Killer B Pickup, oil pan, coolant nipple, oil pump, water pump... Today. Need to buy: Hardware to mount the motor. Nuts for the motor mounts and Full new kit for the motor to Diff. Some were munged and also I just can't find them. Hardware to attach the flexplate to the converter. Same here... Munged and can't find em. Probably tossed both knowing I should buy new. Still haven't picked a oil pressure gauge or send unit. I do have a rear galley hose kit ready to go. Need to dig up the free range hose kit now to continue.
  22. Gonna have some words with the second machine shop that finished the heads. Three of the four time-sert placed in the plug holes are not flush. A plug would never seal on just the rim of the insert. Probably off by 1/16 or more. I'm on no mood for this kind of sloppy work. Since presidents day is just a federal holiday I'm assuming they will be answering the phone in the morning.
