Review of FMS and other knock-off parts

Recommended Posts

Good luck, Marky.

I'd be interested in seeing pictures of the V2.

Pretty shitty that the vendor would not honor your request to skip payment, but at least we have a review of the V2 core. Mismatched BOV holes, and no bolts doesn't speak very highly, but at least you didn't have any bent fins or crappy casting.

Was yours "painted"? How was the finish?

What kind of experience have you guys had with the FMS FMIC? I'm weighing my options, I really want the turboxs FMIC, but its alot more money. I'm only in a rush b/c I want to get an open source tune soon and I don't want to do it twice.

mine fits fine, core is nice and large. Only issue was with the amount of couplers and tbolt clamps, and the bumper beam holes were off about 1/4" in each direction.

EDIT: and the fact that i received the wrong core in the box. But that was fixed quickly.

I originally had set aside money to get a racer x, but then there have been alot of people trying to steer me away from that. So if I'm getting a diff fmic than the racer X, I need money to buy an intake too which wasn't part of my initial plan so $650 for a racer x goes up to over $1k for a turbo xs plus an intake.

Call M Sprank or AZP and get a price from them. They can get you a better price than they can list online.

Don't buy a knock-off.

Yeah, I gotcha. But low barriers to entry means more competition can easily enter the market which means you have a higher risk of failure doing business in that market. Other vendors shouldn't have been surprised. Especially with ItsME dipping in the market. IMO anyways.....

FMS TMIC next to AVO TMIC

Definitely alot longer, but the AVO is thicker. I have not done the math to calculate the overall volume difference.

I have the FMS Cat Back exhaust, installation was very easy, but it looks like it doesn't seal at all, however on a leak test, there was none. All in all i am very happy with it and with a fair cheap price for what it was its great!

well as soon as itsme became a vendor of other aftermarket parts the hate started. one vendor endorsing another local competing vendor's product may not be good business, see?

Well strictly from an install perspective the Racer-X one is not good. We've had lots of customer bring them to us to install. The parts are not at all consistent and require a lot of trimming and tweaking of the parts, parts of the car to really get them to fit properly. Some say it is a 3hr install, as professionals we can not install the Racer-X in 3hrs and be proud of that install, nor would we let it leave our shop in that condition. The Racer-X, like all the other cheapo Chinese parts are not at all Quality Controlled at the factory. Is the designer of these cheapo parts actually visiting the factories to make sure their products are being produced to their specs? One of our tech's who works with us on nights and weekends, works as an engineer for a company that makes bicycle parts as his day job. He as the production engineer/designer travels to the factory every few months in China to ensure they are producing them to his specs, taking measurements etc. If you think any of these knockoffs A) Are engineers and could do this and B) Actually could afford to go over and oversee the production based on the selling price, then you are more naive than I thought.

APS got out of the US market because they realized that we as consumers are essentially pretty cheap folks and don't recognize a good product when we see it. They couldn't deal with the folks buying cheap knockoff items and decided to pull out of the NA market.

It is a shame to see them go, cause they produced some of the best kits with the highest levels of quality. Most of the Walmart-like vendors on these boards were in grade-school or HS when the WRX came out and we were modifying them with quality parts from the likes of Cobb, APS, etc.

I'm not naive, I know what I bought and how much I paid for it. A fmic for less than the cost of a perrin tmic. Anyway it's off my car now for the aussie stuff.

Sorry that wasn't directed at you per-say. :) Just in general :)

  • 2 months later...

Just purchased a real process west and I can definitely say that it is way different then any knock off i've had. I've had 4 knock offs before this intercooler and was tuned after each one (i'm pretty cool with eric from torqued performance, so I get the hook up). The first was the ipr (perrin/avo style). This thing would heat soak to the point where you couldn't touch it and never fit quite right. I ditched that for a ism (pw style). We were able to run a little more timing with this guy. I thought it was decent (anything is after that ipr garbage), but it lacked the proper ducting to take advantage of the hood scoop on my leggie. Never being happy, decided to try a RacerX (not a knock off but worth mentioning). It never fit quite right and was questionable to me since it didn't really make any more power overall. After that I bought an FMS thinking that since I had good luck with the ism clone maybe i'd get lucky again. Wrong. This piece of shit was never installed. The first thing I noticed was that the recirc valve flange actually blocked the hole in the core halfway and had metal burrs everywhere inside. The little fins inside had metal burrs too. The thermal paint (they should say krylon rattle can) was terrible. The outside recirc valve bolt hole was blocked by the welds so the bolt would only go in a 1/4 inch and it didn't even come with the right size bolts for those holes. I demanded a refund and import image racing tried the whole "we just sell them, we don't make them. Take it up with the manufacturer" bs excuse. I always pay with a CC just in case this happens. So after selling two knock offs and filing two CC claims (I find that people that sell garbage rarely want to part with your money once they have it), I broke down and spent the $1000 for the process west. It came packaged super nice (reminded me of an apple product) and the quality out of the box was awesome. I remember Eric explaining to me once about how not all cores are created equal and that was why the avo intercoolers are better then their knock off counter parts. After looking inside I instantly seen the core difference and knew right away that he was right. Nice welds, nice paint, correct hardware, and real quality control sums it up for me.

Just to show the difference in fin density between the 4 crappy ones and the real pw (coincidently it weighs almost double the ims and fms), i'm posting two comparison pics.

Great writeup. Glad to see folks "getting it" in terms of you get what you pay for! :)

I'm starting to notice that the only ones that defend knock offs are those that haven't used the real deal

Agreed. We started out 10+ years ago as enthusiast racers who worked on cars in our free time. Before we started selling parts, we would thoroughly test them out on our own cars on track before we started selling them because naturally we wouldn't want our name tarnished by something we sold to a customer, more importantly we wouldn't want someone's car to get destroyed or someone injured by a sub-par quality part.

That philosophy has carried us through to today where we run a full-time 6 day a week shop and still continue to race in our free time. We also continue to do our own testing of every brand part we sell before we offer it for sale to customers. It makes it real easy for us to sleep at night knowing we've done 125+ mph and punished the parts at a track event before we put them on our clients cars.

This is why you will see us pushing or selling only certain brands of parts on both our own site as well as in forums like this. Not because we couldn't sell and make $ by selling the inferior parts, but because we are folks in the trenches just like everyone else on here and wouldn't want to get sold some ill-fitting or ill-quality part.
