A build thread to mix things up around here....

search diymobile's forum... i've seen a few used ones crop up from time to time when i was still fairly active on that forum. it's nothing but audio nuts so there's usually a ton of great quality gear getting posted up.

as far as cost goes... like i said man, it's like buying a second headunit so it's hard. all depends on the type of person you are though and how badly you want it i suppose lol. i mean hell i have no issues spending over a grand on a quality headunit if it does what i want it to do. others out there pitch a fit over a headunit navi set up that costs 600 bucks.

made some more progress this weekend. would have worked on it all week but i had gun deals all but one night this week. anyways... yesterday i put down the sixth layer of glass on the back, let it cure over night since it was horribly humid/storming. today i went ahead and trimmed up all the edges how i wanted them (close atleast), next up i hot glued the ring, it's mounts and the magnet brace into place. i'll chop up some glass into fluff and use that and some resin to semi glass the stuff for some extra strength later down the line. so far... i think it looks like crap ahhahaha, but it's ridged and seems to be strong enough so whatever. this week should be fairly nice and slow (fingers crossed) where i can get in some nightly work. where i'll work on making the skeleton of the box and put down some fleece. then on to more glass! hazaaaaaaah hahahahha

on with the photos...

lmfao i'd highly doubt that. i'm just one of the few here actually showing what i'm doing. i've seen a few photos here and there of what people have done with their lego's that looked damn good. appreciate the compliment though, it's been a long drawn out process i don't really want to do over again that's for sure.

Hey when I finally get my JDM Double Din I'll be sure to post my setup and hope for some feedback. From your setup alone I've learned that it's not just about installing an amp and subs.

eh you pick up a few things over time... for me it's been almost 13 years since my first intro to audio. which was just a 250 watt amp and a couple low power 12's lol. i thought that was sooooo bad ass back then. all about stepping stones honestly, we all start with something simple and if it's one of those things that we enjoy it just gets progressively worse ahhahah!

whenever you get it up and going link it up, if you want a site for good info it's diymobile audio's forum. there's TONS of audio heads on that place with an INSANE amount of knowledge that make me look like an idiot.

by the way good luck with the jdm swap out. (i kinda skipped this step) it should make even the factory sound pretty good from what i've read. heck might even make you happy enough where you don't need more hahaha.

any idea on what you're wanting to go with?

i've been tossing around the idea of getting a newer headunit in the last couple months. when i was out of town about 3 weeks ago my 6 or 7 year old gps maps were really showing :( for the eclipse with the hard drive (where the maps are stored) they want you to send the whole drive in, they'll then format the thing and send you back something updated. which costs a good 300 freaking bucks... paaaaaaaaaaass.

my go to for car parts also handles audio, tried to talk to me about the new pioneer high end model. i dunno if i like it or not... the menu didn't look bad but i kind of like the kenwood excelon more...

Haven't seen the new Kenwood but my dad has always been a fan of the brand. Good quality. Im a newb to car Audio really but I really want a DD touchscreen unit. I'm not a fan of carrying CDs and would like something that supports HDD for my music. I'm not looking to have an extreme system, just something nice.

well... i'll say this; i have kept my nose out of anything audio related for a few years for fear i'll find more wants. when the current generation audison lrx amps hit i bought a 5.1k because i wanted it. i had nothing to put it in but i wanted it lol. sold it because i was an idiot for buying something i had no use for... so i haven't really kept up with things for fear of buying more crap i don't need.

when i was talking to my dealer i mentioned to him kind of the same deal... i've got the hard drive and i love it. having cds saved in there is fantastic if i forget my mp3 player or whatever. he told me everything anymore has sd card readers built in.

sooooooooooooo just about anything should fill that option you want.

kenwood is good if you go excelon, but bad thing about kenwood is they aren't cheap. some folks also don't like their menu systems because they tend to be more complicated to use... which means steeper learning curve.

i was told pioneer is trying to make a come back. the last few years i thought their headunits were garbage... so the new top of the line they offer which is fairly good priced... maaaaay not be bad. i haven't honestly taken the time to play with it. just watched some demo videos of the menu system and what not.

alpine has always been a steady good brand to go with in audio. they had that hick up ages ago with the screens that pulsed back for user feedback... but that's long since over.

kinda wish eclipse was still around in the states... don't blame them for backing out when everyone started going half ass and cheap here though.

personally i vote going after whatever you like the menu and feature set of the most. i think kenwood is using garmin for nav, pioneer was using something i've never heard of, and i don't know who alpine is using. kinda wish someone would use google's gps lol! that'd probably win me over fairly quickly.

finally picked up some good glue...

and yea i read that people aren't using fleece anymore, well... i had it laying around so i'm using it damnit hahahahah! i'll start to glass it up tomorrow night. i broke my damn mixing quart container which pisses me off... i'll have to find another i can use real fast. i am planning on going to town tomorrow when i get home though. after that i'll shoot for doing the whole resin and body filler thing to smooth out the surface.

inching closer and closer ahhahaha! i also found a used door panel for my car, someone bought the other side or i'd have jumped on it already. thinking about finding another set and working up some fiberglass thing to get my 6.5's in the damn front doors.

all glassed up finally. should be good to roll for some filler here tonight. not entirely sure i've got the tools i need to do all the "body work" so i may have to snag some stuff from my parents before moving forward. either way... here's some images, i've got about 4 layers all over the front of it hopefully i don't need more. i'll see how strong it feels tonight after work and go from there.

i did not remove it... lol. it was hard before i was done layering and putting on the last drop. ahhahahah i don't overly care it's in my little work shop where it's always a mess. later down the line i'll get a little scraper and get what i can off the ground but i was more worried about the box itself.

i plan on doing a little body fill where needed... going to keep it fairly light though since i'll be covering it. i haven't decided if i'm going to do the resin mixed with body fill route or not though.

finally got the thing sanded last weekend... i've had gun sales, demos, and some teaching going on every weekend for the most part for the last three weeks now. i've got a little bit to fill on the back side to get it perfect up to the car panel. i probably pulled it off the mold too soon or something i'm not sure what took place.. either way i'm probably going to figure out how i want to fix that before going to carpet. i also have no idea if i'm going to carpet this thing myself or not. part of me wants to try but the other part sees it as a very very odd looking product to wrap lol.

lol even though the thing is huge... i'll only be sitting 500 to 600 per sub. i'm not a real bass heavy person. plus the good thing about the audison bitone is i can have the four interchangeable eq sets for different kinds of music :D (separate of the sub control gain)

i sound deadened the whole car when i did my first audio project to this car (i'm on two). all of that i did a good 5 years ago. i've got a good share of hushmat in the front and rear doors. (less in the rear since i ran out) i would however like to go ahead and add in more deaden if i could.

will say this i'm not overly concerned with the doors right now since i don't have speakers in any of them right now lol.

the woofer is in the car, just not in the door right now. i've got a baffle on it and that's it right now. i've also got some boxes i made for them that sat under my legs i dabbled with as well.

the krx3 6.5" from focal doesn't fit in the front doors PERIOD. i ran a 3/4" ring like normal which had enough room for the woofer's cone to not hit the door, however the magnet sat so deep that it ran into the window and you couldn't roll down. option b that i tried was to make a 1 1/4" ring which gave the magnet about 1/8th an inch clearance for the window to roll down, however the cone ends up running into the door panel. soooooooo that option was out as well.

i tried for a while to hack the sound of the woofer in the rear door but it just wasn't what i'd call good enough. which lead me to the boxes which made getting in and out a total pain in the ass while the sound was god damn outstanding. which after that made me try out a baffle kind of like a kick without a back is what i've got going on now. while it's not perfect its good enough for temp while i finish the trunk first.

i've been talking with a member here about picking up his set of door panels. provided that does not go through then i'll get those, chop them up where i can bring out the speaker and do a little bit of fiberglassing or fabbing of one sort or another. i didn't want to tear into my own panels... just like i did with the a pillars i ALWAYS buy a back up. (last install i put controls in the ash tray, bought another one of those as well)

as for sealing up the doors... i put deaden behind the inside frame, and then more on the top of the frame. nothing will really ever be 100% perfect, i mean hell cars are some of the worst things to try to perfect audio in lol.

obviously i kinda stopped coming around here but... the build has been done for a good while now. rather the trunk has been done for quite some time now. i keep thinking i want to redo the a pillars but lack of motivation always seems to find a way in. been on the hunt for a new job for going on about 9 months, laid off now for 3 which you'd think would mean i've got plenty of time... although lack of funds now kicks in.

anyways... i figured i'd post these just for the fact i had a couple people watching this looks like.

first sub box wrapped and set in place, trimmed the amp cover to where i'd need for wrapping it.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0250_zps5b029edf.jpg

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0255_zpsc33b79f6.jpg

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0457.jpg

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0458.jpg

a local tuner shop had a couple heavy duty L brackets from some drive train stuff laying around i bought to use for my sub and cover supports. punched a hole in the side of the tire well and into the sub boxes to mount them with some nice heavy bolts.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0462.jpg

amp cover wrapped, this didn't turn out all that great to me... was a huuuuuuge pain in the ass to cut the little slits i'd made for ventilation. my exacto blades were a bit too short and razor blades were also almost too short by the time you put your fingers on them. since i used some spray paint in the cracks to make sure no wood color was showing the carpet wasn't sticking down all that wonderful either. however, i made due and made it work.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0694.jpg

two subs in and mounted, had a slight variation on the two boxes but no one has picked up on it but me.

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0695.jpg

all in and covered

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0698.jpg

cover up for maintenance if needed

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_0703.jpg

and that's that... i've went through three different tunes on my bitone so far as well. shuffled around the 6.5" speakers from baffles in the front to little boxes in the rear, to the rear doors... eventually i'll probably look for a used set of front door panels and mod them some how. until then they're doing alright in the rear doors... bugs me but what can you do when they don't fit up front?

sound is good, i've got a ton more bass than i've ever had before... i have it dialed fairly far back on the bitone to level out everything but the focal krx3's can scream well enough to hang with the added output so it's not so bad.

all in all considering i did everything but tig weld my amp rack... i'm pleased. not bad for a first time run.
