New Wagon concept, comment?

Japanese brand unveils Advanced Tourer concept, a sporty new sub-Liberty station wagon.

Subaru has unveiled a new concept sports wagon that could be sold here as a smaller alternative to its Liberty wagon.

The new sporty wagon is likely to sit in between the Impreza and the Liberty and could compete with smaller wagons such as the Volkswagen Golf wagon and the Hyundai i30 CW.

And in a big pointer to the future, the concept, known as the Advanced Tourer, is powered by a smaller displacement 1.6-litre, direct injection turbocharged “boxer” engine teamed to a CVT automatic – a combination Subaru says “will guide the brand’s future engine strategy”.

Subaru currently has 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engines for its WRX and Forester performance variants, but managing director Nick Senior says smaller turbocharged engines are being considered as the company looks to trim fuel consumption.

“It’s one of the things that as a brand we’ve got to have a look at in the future,” he says.

“It’s got to be considered. Is there a case for smaller engines with turbos.”

Senior says that in the short term, traditional petrol engines are still the main game in the car industry.

“There is a hell of a lot more to be gained with improvements in the internal combustion engine.

“We’ve got to realise that despite the hype, the alternative vehicle market is 0.86 per cent of the total vehicle market in Australia. We’ve got to realise that hybrid sales decreased this year. Diesel passenger car sales have decreased this year. There is still a hell of a lot of life left in the traditional engine.”

The Volkswagen Group, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have all switched to lower displacement turbocharged engines to deliver fuel savings while retaining good performance and Senior says it makes sense.

The Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept also features a hybrid system with an EV mode that allows the car to be driven at low speeds purely by the car’s electric motor.

Shame it'll never see production looking even close to that.

Good because it's ugly.

Didn't stop the 5th gen.

I'd rather see more aggressive styling, than another Camry.

Also significant is the concept’s hybrid powertrain. Starting with Subaru’s signature, turbocharged boxer engine, engineers have downsized displacement to 1.6 liters for better efficiency. The electric motor was designed in-house and is powered by lithium-ion batteries. Despite the smaller boxer engine, the hybrid system will reportedly produce the same figures as the current 2.0 and 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines. Subaru isn’t quite ready to release power figures and ditto the hybrid’s electric-only capabilities.

I like it, I'm also hoping for more power than the base 170hp.

they said the power should be equivalent to 2.0 or 2.5L engine. I think they were talking about their turbocharged engine (I hope, at least) since the 1.6 is turbocharged anyway

my math:

1.6L FI + Lithium-ion battery = 2.5L FI

I like the styling. Too bad the bits I like will have been watered down into bland meh long before it reaches production.
Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

I think that it looks like one of the coolest looking wagons ever. This is what we need to stand out in a market full of SUVs, something over the top and stylish. As long as it comes available with a proper manual transmission, and decent powertrain/diff/suspension options, you can count me in

I concur.

2010 2.5GT limited is for sale. :)

I second this ^^^ - It could be toned down slightly from the concept, but definitely needs to be edgier than the Camry.

I loved the Legacy concept (prior to the 2010 release), and the production Legacy lost most of the concept's edginess - I was greatly disappointed. The aggressive nose on the concept drew attention away from the bulbous shape of the body and fenders. With that aggressive nose gone, all that's left is the bulbousness.

The Impreza did a slightly better job of transitioning from concept to reality, so let's hope the Gen6 will too.
