ibr_adam09
Not really sure where this leak is coming from, but I notice it while doing my front sway bars. The pass side is has oil along the edges of the valve cover near the back of the bank ( towards the firewall side) and dripping onto my uppipe and down onto the sway bar. Before I replace anything, are there any other seals that could be there ? http://i344.photobucket.com/albums/p330/ibr_adam09/2005%20Legacy%20GT%20%20ABP/SAM_1193.jpg http://i344.photobucket.com/albums/p330/ibr_adam09/2005%20Legacy%20GT%20%20ABP/SAM_1194.jpg http://i344.photobucket.com/albums/p330/ibr_adam09/2005%20Legacy%20GT%20%20ABP/SAM_1196.jpg

ehsnils
The seal in the spark plug well is known for being a potential leak.
AZP Installs
The valve cover gaskets do go and aren't insanely hard to do. Its just a tight fit and is annoying. As people have said you should do the spark plug seals as well since they come out when you pull the valve cover. Otherwise there isnt much else to leak from there. -Jake http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://upload.pbase.com/image/137566671.jpg Call directly for your best Whiteline Price! | We also carry almost every manufacturer now, so before you buy parts call us. lowwill
Does it look like this? Been annoying me for weeks. Thought it was coolant than power steering. No leaks from turbo. Just seems to burn on the exhaust.
ibr_adam09
Sorry I had to rehost he pics. I got the pass. gaskets with the spark plug ones as well. Just need to find time to do it. Maybe I'll do a DIY if there isn't one, though it should be self explanatory.
captainobvious
Well i brought the car to my mechanic friend this morning to get the valve cover gaskets done, and i go there today after lunch only to find out one of the bolts snapped and had to be drilled out and retapped. Thank god it was one that was easy to get to. They have only done the passenger side and the drivers side still has to get done. Crossing my fingers this goes according to plan or im takin my work truck home with me.
SCOBARU
i had the same problem after my uppipe install, i did the gasket pita btw took me a while to get done. the leak was still there afterwards. i just took brake clean washed down the entire engine and then put some black high heat silicone on the bottom of the valve cover and so far no leaks been about 3 months now. hopefully everything works out for you. captainobvious
It was smokin like crazy last night after the guy changed everything, but after driving awhile it went away, probably residue that had dripped onto the pipes. Checked the oil level this morning so far no leaks and spots on the driveway. Gonna double check again after i get to work as well.
lowwill
I seen were my issue was. It was so hot above the exhaust on the right side a piece of the gasket was oozing out of place. Literally. Cut away the excess and put some high temp silicon on and no more leak. Its ghetto but then so am I

An engine wash to get rid of all the old oil and then you can see if the fix was good after a while.

ehsnils
Engine-degreaser on the dirty spots, then rinse off with a hose. No pressure washer and no water or degreaser on the alternator and throttle sensor and be careful with the spark plug wells. Also don't spray any hot parts like the turbo. If the engine is warm it will evaporate.

Max Capacity
No the engine doesn't have to be removed. Unless you have the tools and area, pay the man to do this job. You don't need to go to a stealership just a good mechanic. Any body have a idea of the labor cost for this job ? 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Remove intake. Remove coilpacks. Remove the 8 bolts holding the cover on. Remove the cover. Clean mating surfaces. Apply rtv in the proper locations. Add new gasket. Then put it back together. jhawk222
This might be my next mission..will have to commandeer my cousin's heated garage!! Noticed slight smoking. While under the car changing the axle I saw oil on the cross member that appeared to be coming from the valve cover area.
subie_dude05
Good info. Which file in the "vacation pics" shows the valve cover removal and installation? i see a diagram in the Engine>Engine Mechanical> General Description and shows RTV on the bottom corner. Also, best place to buy the seals? I have heard that the felpro don't fit well. I will give Fred Beans a call... or victor reinz? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/2005-Subaru-Legacy-AWD/Valve-Cover-Gasket/_/N-jngwmZ8iics?filterByKeyWord=valve+cover&fromString=search
