BAC5.2
I'm looking for an iPhone cable that does three simple things. First, connects to the dock connector. This is a must. Second, has a USB, cigarette lighter, or even +/- leads to charge the phone. Also a must. Third, has a 3.5mm plug for audio. Monster Cable makes one that looks interesting, but it is expensive and the reviews are TERRIBLE for it. Anyone know of, or are using, anything else? joedirtae09
I got a cable off of ebay that does everything you want for only $8. It connects to the USB adapter for the cigarette lighter and it has a 3.5mm cable for audio. If youre particular about sound quality, you might want to get the Monster but for less than $10, it was def a bargain! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300512998467&ssPageName=STRK:MEAFB:IT
BAC5.2
The reviews of the Monster have been terrible, so I'd rather use something else. For $8, I like the one you found. Is sound quality really bad with the cable you listed? joedirtae09
its not horrible, but its not the best... it doesnt sound as good as using a regular 3.5mm cable. dont know if that helps? i forgot to mention this... you may have to jailbreak your iPhone 4 to use this cable or any any other cable that Apple has approved for the iPhone. you might recieve an error message along the lines of "this accessory is unsupported etc...." i can test it out on my sisters iPhone which isnt jailbroken if you're considering buying this. I Donated thefultonhow Posted March 8, 2011 I Donated Share Posted March 8, 2011 I'd recommend the iSimple Gateway (also made by PAC), but that might be beyond what you're willing to spend. Provides pretty seamless iPod/iPhone and Bluetooth integration into the 07-09 stereos, though. I can do an in-person demo for you at some point if you're interested. I use it with the iPod Classic and my Samsung Epic 4G, but it works similarly with the iPhone.
BAC5.2
Any details about the gateway? I am all for seamless integration. I might not do it now, but I might do a revision in the future. BAC5.2
TFH - Is it the ISSB571? Looks like you can get them on eBay for around $136 shipped. That's not dreadful, especially if it's a PNP for the back of the radio. It means that I can tap my Nav into those wires, and not have to waste my time building a harness. Sounds like a win-win. I'm going to build a custom iPhone mount to sit in the ashtray with a dock connector built into it. I haven't finalized my design, but I did model the ash tray insert. I'm still in the "thinking" phase. I'm not sure if it's worth it to block the heater controls with the phone in the dock, but I like the fact that de-docked, nothing would look amiss. Plus, it would give easy access to Pandora and things like that without having to have cables everywhere, AND it would solve my bluetooh problem, so long as it auto-pairs and isn't shitty. It looks like I can choose between the HD Radio and Bluetooth. If that's the case, BT wins hands-free (see what I did there?). Hmm, I definitely like this idea! I Donated thefultonhow Posted March 8, 2011 I Donated Share Posted March 8, 2011 Yeah, I have the BT module too. If you are listening to the iPod and a call comes in, it automatically pauses the music (this is more of an issue for me, since I don't have an iPhone, just an iPod). You can pick up, hang up, reject a call, voice dial, etc. through the radio. And it takes a couple of seconds, but it even shows the number that's calling on the display. It also does A2DP audio, although it only supports playing/pausing through the radio, not skipping. In terms of auto-pairing, it does most of the time. Occasionally the pairing fails and I have to do it manually (luckily, it's easy to do on Android when a call comes in). And incoming voice quality is really good as long as you turn the BT call volume down a bit (on my phone, around halfway). Otherwise, it clips. I have only ever heard people complain about the voice quality from the mic when I have the window open (I mounted it at the top left corner of the windshield and tucked the cord behind the airbag in the A-pillar). BAC5.2
Sounds pretty good! And nothing external, except the microphone right? I won't use A2DP for music, I'll just use the dock connector. Can you control the iPod through the stock radio? I Donated thefultonhow Posted March 8, 2011 I Donated Share Posted March 8, 2011 Correct on both counts. The interface through the headunit for iPod control isn't great, but it's simple enough to use once you get used to it.
I Donated thefultonhow Posted March 8, 2011 I Donated Share Posted March 8, 2011 Oh, I did have a quality problem with it where the harness wasn't making good contact inside the plug when I first got it. I "modified" the harness pins so that they would make better contact with the unit, and after that, it worked fine.
BAC5.2
Hmm, interesting. I won't use the iPod feature very often, but I'll be using Pandora quite a bit. How big is the connector? The case for my iPhone really only fits the stock connector, so I might have to trim the new one. Plus, I have to be able to squeeze it into the ashtray dock I make. BAC5.2
Yep, but I think I found it. The BT module is ISBT21 and the gateway is ISSB571. Looking on eBay, both can be had for around $240. That looks like a pretty perfect solution, though it does cost a packet. Plug-and-play, though, right?
