RyanGT
How about going Bavarian midsize? It'll handle and it's classy! http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/cto/1453108857.html The guy's description makes me chuckle: "Ok tires might need new rotars but the brakes were done a few months ago." What now? NO! NO! NO! Not a 528e, that's the eta engine. It redlines at 4500 rpm - that's like driving a diesel. BMW made the 'e' engines to save on fuel... it has lighter camshafts. It's BMW-lite! . . I have enough drama for now.....

Saving on fuel = fewer pit stops = winning enduros Wikipedia suggests swapping for a head from a 325i, giving it an 8.3:1 compression ratio...perfect for ghettocharging! And we avoid any potential Lemons-esque "Noch Ein Scheiß-E30" stigma! Alternatively, the wiki tuners claim that the post-'87 "Super Eta" can take 325i cams, springs, intake manifold, throttle, and ECU and put out 180-200hp and rev to 7500... sorry...this forum practically blows goat nuts so im not always on here.Team Pony Express POSTED FROM MY COMPUTER USING A WEB BROWSER

LegGTLT
And what would those parts cost? Would they somehow be less than $100 and we get the car for $400??? Spoonwacker
We can sell parts off the car (interior, stereo, etc) to recoup some of the initial investment. I have no clue about the price for the parts, but I'm just throwing them out there. Honestly though, decent gas mileage is a very good thing in any endurance race. Time spent filling up in the pits, especially if you don't have the benefit of any pressurized delivery systems a la F1, is time you're being passed by cars that are slower but more economical. sorry...this forum practically blows goat nuts so im not always on here.Team Pony Express POSTED FROM MY COMPUTER USING A WEB BROWSER

Tracer-X
Also, no matter how fast you are at pitting for fuel (not driver change) you have a min 5 minutes in the pits. They give you a time card and won't let you leave before the 5 min mark Jump on it, Let's do it, Ride it, My Pony... EL4NFZT7
LegGTLT
So we truely want some 30+ MPG/15+ gallon so when we do fill up we're ok with having 5 mins in there. NSFW
I wonder if we'd have better luck going to junkyards and looking at cars that have been rolled. Major body damage isn't going to be a big deal for us, as long as we can pull the wheels into approximately the right position and orientation. I bet a $1000 car loses at least half its value when it's been rolled.... I still think that some-assembly-required Toyota was the coolest so far. I wonder if we could get a (rolled?) 2.5L NA Subaru and stay within budget.

Tracer-X
After doing a bunch of reading on the Chump Car forum it is now my understanding that you can replace broken/worn out parts with OEM used parts from wreaking yards w/o them being adding to you $500 limit. This is good news for using the Escort. I do however think that we should take the turbo off to make it last the whole 14 hours. I have also been thinking about doing and ITB's on it. I know of 2 other people who have made them. I might even be able to talk one of them into loaning us the setup for the race. Jump on it, Let's do it, Ride it, My Pony... NSFW
Can we tune the Escort to give moderate (sustainable) boost, so we can get some power from the turbo and still last 14 hours? Is it fuel-injected, or does it use a carb?
RyanGT
NSFW, you mentioned in a earlier post that we should drive the car down to PDX for the race instead of trailering it down to test its endurance. I kinda agree with that but the drive down is probably way easier on it than 1 hr on the track with all the braking, gear changes, etc. What I am trying to say is we need to test the car's durability on a track or simply some 'spirited' driving before the event. . . I have enough drama for now.....

I was also thinking about this aspect on this morning's commute...I think we should drive someplace long before the race so that we can truly test the endurance, like to Moses Lake & back...get some mountain driving in there to really see how she handles. We'd need a chase car, of course...just in case it doesn't make it. Make it idiot-proof and someone will make a better idiot. .../PartyWagon/...
