Using The Ebay/VAG-COM Cable To Datalog

No problem, we were all that way at one time in our life ;-)

A lot of info can be found here http://www.romraider.com/Documentation/RomRaiderFAQ and on the RR forums.

You'll need to do a lot of reading to understand those logs. It's a steep learning curve and requires much reading. The FAQ and this http://web.njit.edu/~trb2/WRX/download/ is a great start.

I have a 2006 LGT...which cable do I need? It would be nice if the first post was updated with which models could use this cable instead of being condescending and saying we should already know if we are reading this thread...that just doesn't help anyone.

He wasn't being condescending. There is a separate thread regarding the cable. This is about how you datalog, so in other words this is Part II, you want to read about Part I

This is the droid you are looking for

http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/using-autonostics-vag-com-cable-110768.html

Actually I was referring to this:

THIS CABLE WILL

NOT

WORK WITH CAN-BUS ECU's.

However, if you have done ANY research into the subject; you would already know that. That is the reason they created the Tactrix v2 cable...

Is there a list somewhere on this site or in this forum that shows me which cars work with which cable? How do I know which car has CAN Bus? I thought the research I was supposed to be doing was on this forum?

Trying to find answers and if you know them, I would beg you to tell me...no more goose chases please.:spin::)

So you would agree that my 2006 will work fine with this ebay cable? Excellent information and should be put in the very first post of this thread.

Thank you.:)

Ask and you shall receive. First post updated...

Let's kick this pig!

That's why I always choose US sellers with product located in the US. Paid Sunday, had it Thursday. Cost a few dollars more but worth it to me.

Got it today...figures. I should have waited one more day to rant. Came from Hong Kong but got here in one piece. Now I just need to determine if I want to take it for a spin now or later!

Does anyone know if the VAG-COM cable works with any OBDII car?

I have a coworker who wants to log his pickup (2003 Ford F150) because he saw me looking at DeltaDash and started asking questions and got jealous when I told him it cost me only $12.

Probably not. The VAG-COM cable communicates with the Subaru ECU via the K-line (half-duplex mode). According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-board_diagnostics#OBD-II_Signal_Protocols Ford uses different signalling and pins (2 & 10) in the ODB-II connector.

Thanks for that link. It looks like it is using 3&10. So, VAG-COM cable only really reads the K-line and not all of the pins, huh? For some reason I figured it read all pins but only the appropriate pins would actually be hot from our cars so it would know what type of car it is.

I guess I will have to tell him to look elsewhere.

Can someone with a working Vag-Com cable check in Device Manager and tell me exactly which driver files and versions are being used? Also the Manufacturer name under the General tab, as well as the name of the device showing under your com ports? I'm trying to determine which set of drivers to use...Tactrix or FTDI since neither is working right now.

Mine shows up as a USB-Serial device or something like that.

For the Ford, check http://allobd.com/products.asp?cat=40

VAG-COM using the FTDI chip, to my knowledge just converts electrical signalling levels from USB to what is appropriate for K-line. It does not convert the communications protocol like the ELM chip does.
