rao
You don't - you need the other type of compressor. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
the_marquis78
lame, why did the auto parts store give me this one?
rao
It is what you would use for a lot of cars, but as you discovered you need ones that attach from the outside.. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
the_marquis78
how do I get the top nut off the strut?? i've read several explanations but we can't seem to get it off...anyone have advice?
itsme
if you have air tools, an impact wrench should work. don't take the nut off till you have the spring compress. super.duper.BL6
If working with regular hand tools and no vice, its much easier to first break the torque on the top nut while the spring/shock assembly is still on the car. The weight of the car acts as your vice....preventing the assembly from spinning around.
AWDxBOOST
you need a pass thru socket and an allen wrench to get the top bolt off i hit it with an air impact and got it off, but it was iffy getting it off that way
the_marquis78
ok, we tried it on the other side and it did break the torque but it didn't seem to make any difference. will the spring noticeably lighten up when we break the torque on the still-connected strut? NutBucket
My ghetto-rigged method; 17mm deep socket Vice Grips 5 or 6 mm allen wrench. Worked as well as can be expected. My electric impact gun only managed to spin the shaft on the shock.
hal9e3
or you can use an offset box wrench Good for getting the nut off but you need a crow's foot to torque it when you reinstall it.
hutru01
The real question is why the hell is it that tight to begin with. This is exactly why I don't like to take my car to stealerships.
AKSubie
Good for getting the nut off but you need a crow's foot to torque it when you reinstall it. theres enough room to get the crows foot in there?
BoxerGT2.5
Ok, so entertain me, a relative newbie, this question. I rented a spring compressor from my local autopart store that looks like this < how do I use the compressor if I'm at this stage of the install: i have the strut off and on my table please help me!! See that spring compressor sitting to the right of the shock in the last pick.....use those. To get the top nut off you have three options. Pass-thru socket, 17mm offset wrench, air impact (don't worry about taking it off with the impact, you just don't want to put it back on with it......ask PGT ) Wait till you get to the rears. hal9e3
theres enough room to get the crows foot in there? Yeah, but it takes a little work. I trimmed the rubber portion back, which prevents using the dust cap BTW, and used washers to raise the nut as close to the top of the strut shaft as possible w/o exposing any net threads. Waxiboy
1. break the nut loose while still mounted on the car 2. remove struts 3. compress spring 4. dis-assemble You can re-torque when installed on the car. You think the front is hard? Wait 'till you get to the lower rear strut bolt
the_marquis78
the only thing I worry about is that that the top nut of one of the struts might have gotten a little stripped when we were trying to get it off. Nothing too bad but I'm nervous to use air tools on it now.
