iPod Direct-connection successful! (but VERY difficult)

I finally got around to installing the hardware that I ordered from jazzymt. It's certainly a project to get in to the radio, but the instructions were clear and installing the board was only a matter of plugging in two ribbon cables and a mini-plug into a jack. I don't mind playing the silent CD in the background. The sound is great, though the levels from the line out on my iaudio X5 come out a bit lower than radio or CDs. I'm very happy with it. Thanks jazzymt.

Just to review (for new viewers of this thread), a couple other guys have taken this idea and developed products they are selling to do this, see their posts at: http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18504 and http://www.legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18870

I've started a new thread (My 2005 Legacy iPod input hack -- no blank CD required!) with my own iPod aux input hack. My method is more difficult and more intrusive than the CD changer technique, but it allows you to get direct-line input sound quality without the need to play a blank CD.

I have been trying to get a head-unit that can control my iPod in my 2005 Legacy. It looks like there is finally a kit: http://www.installer-data.com/item/display_item.php?it=99-8901 Has anyone tried this? Thanks, S

Having personally disassembled my own combo dual-zone climate control/radio/CD unit, I can tell you that any adapter kit for that unit would either have to totally re-create the climate control circuitry, or require you to do some really bizarre work of salvaging pieces of your old head unit, remounting those pieces somewhere else, and even then probably require its own duplicate of the climate control display. Perhaps, for a ridiculously high price, a Subaru dealer would sell you a downgrade to the manual climate control/radio unit, and then you'd be free to install your own choice of head unit using this kit -- depending on how well the kit works, of course, which is not something I've heard any feedback about yet.

I've got a LEGACY 2005 s.w. bifuel station wagon buyed in ITALY with the radio system + 1 CD lector model GX - 201LH. Have anyone an idea on how to connect an IPOD 4 giga with clickable wheel ? Does exist a kit different from those who use the FM modulation system (I've tried some but all of them are really bad). Is the radio system made from KENWOOD ??? Thanks to the friends of this forum. Luca

Ciao Luca, I installed a METRA kit which allowed me to use an Alpine Headunit and IPod interface. I also installed the subwoofer. The METRA Kit looks better with the Alpine than the factory stereo and of course it sounds great too. Jazzy help in the NYC metro area. I just bought an 06 Outback and can't do without my iPod. Seems that people here have had success with the jazzy fix. Anyone willing to help a mechanically challenged Outback owner with the install? Payment can be worked out offline.
