mwr
I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area and I know labor is high here (dealer service rates $110-$140, good independant shops $90-$110). But yesterday I saw a sign in a highly-regarded Subaru dealer that said their 30,000 mile service was $740. Of course I won't pay that, but looking at the recommended list of items on the Subaru site I don't see where it should cost over $300. What am I missing? jerami1981
as others have stated, there is nothing that would warrant anything that high of a cost, they just charge it and people pay it.
PhiTauFord
just received a quote of $570. are there any resale valuation issues if you don't have this type of service performed by a dealer?

highlander
No the dealer will provide a list of what is included in the 30k service.... or you can show your mechanic your owners service schedule (it's listed in there too). I'm curious how they inspect the timing belt???? Do they pull the cover off or just check for play in the valve train? If they pulled the cover, they are half way to replacing the damned thing. subaruowner840
Inspect Brake line Clutch CV Joint Cooling System Disc Brakes Drive Belt Fuel Filter Fuel Line Parking Brake Steering & Suspention Timing Belt Replace Air Filter Brake Fluid Cabin Air Filter (if equipped) Coolant Engine Oil & Filter A/T or M/T oil Differential Oil Rotate Tires (they balanced for free) I was quoted $550-590 at dealerships. I would have preferred to have a dealer do it but it was done at a local shop (Japanese Specialists in Sheridan, CO) for $328.12 (212.50 Labor, 96.60 Parts, 10.60 Shop Supplies, 8.42 Tax). They did the same work if not better for a lot less. I think the 30K service is necessary and should be preformed. I was hesitant about the brake fluid and coolant replacement thinking those fluids could last longer. But if you get water in the brake fluid you're looking at a larger bill to replace corroded master cylinder or calipers. If the coolant breaks down it could damage the radiator and water pump, again a huge expence to replace. jcm1835
I just got a quote from Sangera Subaru in Bakersfield, CA... $819.99! I told them that was a whole lot more than I wwould be willing to pay. I just wanted the 30k service, not a new car. The local garage gave a quote of $200.00, and they are 75 miles closer to home. Jim_KT
^^^^^ Good golly... That's where I purchased my LGT from back in september of 2005. You just saved me a phone call for my 30k service.
mbcracken
I was quoted $485. for the following. Inspect Brake line Clutch CV Joint Cooling System Disc Brakes Drive Belt Fuel Filter Fuel Line Parking Brake Steering & Suspention Timing Belt Replace Air Filter Brake Fluid Cabin Air Filter (if equipped) Coolant Engine Oil & Filter A/T or M/T oil Differential Oil This is from a local dealership that also uses Castrol Syntec for the engine and Kendall gear oil for the tranny/differential. has anyone used kendall gear oil for their leggy? My search turned up very little here. Cheers, mike
Scooter
I just got a quote from Sangera Subaru in Bakersfield, CA... $819.99! And I thought my dealership was going to be the clear 'winner', at $750!!! I tried telling the service manager that was a bit ridiculous, but he stood firm, even insisted the fuel filter was 'required'. direavenger
^^WTF is this "MOA Oil Suppliment"?? BTW, it looks like they marked all of the BS items on their list with a "BG". How nice of them! The Dude - Two inches and counting...
ilh
Wow, that doesn't even include replacing the transmission and differential fluids, just "inspecting" them.
Scooter
Wow, that doesn't even include replacing the transmission and differential fluids, just "inspecting" them. I agree it's unclear on the chart, but in talking with the service manager the "Transmission Service" and "Differential Service" listed at the bottom do include replacing the fluids for both. firedawgs
I am scheduled for my 30K service on Thursday. I have the service plan which includes the oil, oil filter, air filter, brake fluid flush, and coolant flush. I am bringing my own synethic engine oil, super blue brake fluid, and water wetter. The olny thing I am paying for is differential fluid flush ($70) which I am using synethic for that as well. They recommend the tranny flush, but I am still thinking about that. FrescoGT
you should be able to do it all for $250 at a reputable mechanic. just get the list from subaru, and have a non gaffe-job shop do it instead. $500 is f*cking highway robbery. they list out "coolant" but they don't flush. they list out "brake fluid" but they don't replace it. all they do is look in the damned reservoir. save your $$, and get the job done right at a real mechanic. right-on! I paid about $225 for 30k service on the WRX.. very similar, if not, identical servicing needs as the LGT.
Scooter
Is it necessary to flush it out? Can't they just drain it and refill? I think you're right - it's not a true 'flush'. The dealer that quoted my service made that point: they just drain and re-fill. I think they said that's what they do for the coolant, as well. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. firedawgs
You can get it done off site. The problem is that Subaru states you must use this certain type of AT fluid?? That is what I have heard from a couple sources. Updated my vBGarage:
Vimy101
Bite the bullet. Buy it from the dealer and get a flush done off site. With Infinitis, most members used Mobil 1 with a little Lubeguard Red and Lubeguard Black with excellent results. The J30 tranny was notorius for failing early. Tranny filter change and then flush (though there was frequent debate about the order). My tranny was still running strong @ 185k. That said, I know diddley about Subaru ATF or ATs. The transmission filter change is hugely important especially for the first service. All the little bits worn off during the break in period are lodged in the filter which restricts ATF flow. Heat is the enemy and ATF not only lubes the mechanism it cools as well so unimpeded circulation is paramount for longevity. SOA (and all other OEMs) only wants you to get through the warranty period.
firedawgs
The tranny filter is supposed to be 100K miles. I doubt that. Anyone know about the external tranny filter behind the battery?? Updated my vBGarage:
firedawgs
OK, I had my 30K service done yesterday. I did use my service program coupon, but it did not cover everything. And yes there standard price for a 30K mile is $475 (which is BS; especially if they are not flushing the fluids). Anywho, I wasn't very impressed. I brought in all my own oils, but still paid for diff and transmission; which was OK. The not OK part is that none of the fluid chances were flushes. So I could not use my Super Blue Brake fluid. They would not add my water wetter either, as they felt "uneased at adding it". The transmission was just drained and filled (fine whatever). They said that the filter is suppossed to last 100K miles. Then I asked about changing the external filter behind the battery and they said there wasn't one. I know I have seen a filter that looks like a oil filter behind there before. One good note, I did get a outback as a loaner for the day (non turbo though). I will do the brake flush with the super blue next month when I get my rotors and pads on. At least for now the diffs are running synthetic and I did add the water wetter. Engine = Mobil 1 5w30 syn. Diffs = Lucas 75w90 syn. coolant = Redline water wetter brakes = Super Blue Brake Fluid (next month) Trans = Subaru fluid Updated my vBGarage:
